The role
The IT Test Manager has the responsibility to lead all testing activity for IT Projects. You will be responsible for designing and implementing the testing strategy. You will define, drive and manage the test delivery within the project, agreeing and assuring third-party testing as necessary. The role will be the principal point of contact for communication and reporting on testing progress, acting as the escalation point for testing issues.
Working closely with technical and business stakeholders the IT Test Manager will ensure appropriate test coverage and test traceability, prioritising and directing test efforts to address and mitigate the risks presented by the system under test. You will also manage the testing team and coordinate with other project stakeholders.
Key accountabilities
- Test Strategy: Informed by technical and business stakeholders, develop and maintain a test strategy which defines the test phases required, the test tools & techniques to employ, test artefacts and test approach in alignment with the project objectives and business goals.
- Test Planning: Collaborate with project stakeholders to create and sign off detailed test plans, including scope, objectives, resources, tools and timelines.
- Team Leadership: Where appropriate, externally recruit or select internally test team members. Lead and mentor a team of testers externally/internally, setting clear expectations and providing guidance to ensure efficient test creation/execution.
- Test Creation: Enable and supervise the creation of test conditions from requirements, record test traceability and incorporate those conditions into appropriate tests.
- Test Execution: Oversee the execution of test cases, ensuring appropriate coverage of functional, non-functional, and regression testing.
- Defect Management: Define and document the defect management approach and tooling. Identify, track, and manage defects, working closely with business stakeholders' development teams to prioritize and resolve issues.
- Automation: Promote and implement test automation where available and appropriate to improve the speed and efficiency of releases/patches.
- Quality Assurance: Establish and enforce quality assurance processes and best practices throughout the software development lifecycle, including quality gates.
- Reporting: Provide regular status reports on testing progress, issues, and test coverage to project stakeholders. Deliver detailed end-of-phase reports and final test-completion reports for business sign-off.
- Risk Management: Identify and mitigate testing risks via a risk log, ensuring that potential issues are addressed proactively.
- Third-party testing. Review and agree all key test artefacts including strategy, plan, test evidence to assure third-party delivery.
- Continuous Improvement: Drive continuous improvement in testing processes and methodologies, staying in line with industry best practices.

Skills & experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field
- At least 5 years of experience as a Test Manager, Test Lead, or a similar role, preferably in the IT industry
- Proficient in various testing tools and methods, such as ISTQB, ISEB, PMP, QAI, 9001, ISO, HP, CAPM, SILK, or ALM
- Strong knowledge of test management processes, design techniques, and best practices
- Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and handle multiple projects simultaneously
- Attention to detail, quality-oriented, and customer-focused
- Significant experience ( >3 years) assuring third-party suppliers.
- Experience and expertise in both risk management and risk-based testing.
- Experience managing both automation and load/performance test tools/teams.
- Experience leading a team through the complete SDLC.
- Experienced facilitator of meetings, workshops and test forums.
- Experience with waterfall and agile methodologies, agile certification preferred.
- Project management experience and qualification (PMP, PRINCE2)
