Functions or Scope of Assigned Duties

1. Using state of the art equipment the incumbent obtains polysomnograms on patients with life threatening sleep disorders. The incumbent obtains multiple sleep latency tests on patients with possible narcolepsy or other disorders of excess sleepiness. All of the testing performed requires on line analysis by the technologist to obtain the necessary data for correct diagnosis and therapy for the patient. The incumbent must make decisions about therapy in the case of patients with sleep apnea who are undergoing split night studies. This requires both obtaining studies that are representative and making decisions during the study if the patient is appropriate that night to undergo therapy, and determining that the therapy is optimal.
2. The incumbent is able to stage and score sleep studies.
3. The incumbent is comfortable with troubleshooting CPAP equipment and assisting in the optimization of this treatment in patients already on CPAP or BiPAP or variants.
4. The incumbent assists in the education of students (medical students, polysomnography students) and residents and fellows.
5. Based on experience and knowledge the incumbent provides oxygen therapy, and or nasal CPAP and or nasal BiPAP and or nasal autopap therapy, determining the proper levels to be administered.
6. The incumbent is able to determine the appropriate settings of BiPAP ST as well as Servopap. The incumbent recognizes various cardiac arrythmias and independently decides when to call for professional intervention. The incumbent recognizes and describes seizures and other behavior during the sleep study that may require intervention.
7. The incumbent is able to utilize the sophisticated equipment to obtain studies with an extended montage to allow for seizure monitoring. This is performed much more frequently than in most other labs and speaks to the complexity of our referred patients.
8. The incumbent is also able to utilize the more limited equipment that allows monitoring of respiratory parameters in sleep.
9. The incumbent maintains the guidelines on infection control for our laboratory and interfaces with manufacturers to determine appropriate specifications and with our infectious control group and SPD to insure that we are following safe and appropriate procedures. The incumbent disseminates this information on a regular basis to other staff via in-service presentations and informal teaching to make sure guidelines are followed.
10. Teaching - the technologist will assist in teaching new technologists on use of equipment and newer techniques and insure that they are proficient in these techniques.

Some work may require walking and standing in conjunction with travel to and attendance at meetings and conferences away from the worksite. Stamina and concentration to meet crucial deadlines is required.

Work Conditions: The work is performed in a typical office environment located in a health care facility. The work environment involves everyday risks and discomforts that require normal safety precautions. The responsibilities of the position require occasional travel and may subject the position to various resultant environmental changes.

Duties include, but may not be limited to:

• Research and development, either directly or in an oversight capacity, with contracted resources to build and maintain mobile applications while focusing on assignment as the primary managing and oversight resource to one or more major enterprise-level product divisions.
• Responsible for conducting analyses and support of electronic health record data, personal health record data and real time health data from digital therapeutics and commercially available datasets related to socioeconomic indicators of health.
• Responsible for supporting OCC's enterprise data infrastructure. In addition, the incumbent is recognized for Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR), HL7 and world-wide standards for data architecture.
• Knowledge of how terminology systems work, are maintained, and integrated as metadata tied to data systems to allow interoperability between disparate independently managed systems.
• Executes strategies for maintaining and expanding data management and product development services that inform decisions at the highest levels of VA related to OCC.
• Responsible for management of major components of OCC's enterprise data infrastructure; its integration into other VA databases, analyses, and datasets (i.e., VA and contractor); implementation of changes in national data collection processes; related data and analysis support and maintenance; and any other areas.
• Applies broad, detailed, and exceptionally current knowledge pertaining to advanced data management techniques to define, develop, and/or request contract or research support as required to produce state-of-the-art emerging software
  and technology.
• Manages multiple concurrent workstreams, including contractors, requiring the ability to set clear milestones and work using agile design methods.
• Support the development of analytic approaches, allocation of resources, methodology development, technical documentation, and oversight of the maintenance of all aspects of the data management and analytics infrastructure for OCC's enterprise-level WMS Program portfolio.
• Supports senior leadership for developing, implementing, evaluating, and ongoing management of OCC's enterprise-level WMS infrastructure and its associated national policies, guidance documents, trainings, and other resources and tools.
