Sterile Storage and Distribution:

1. Serves as a senior expert in inventories, replenishes shortages from sterile supply, inspects for sterility integrity for instrument sets and expendable items.

1. Coordinates the assignments given by the supervisor to receive a full range of reusable medical supplies, instruments and equipment from hospital wards, clinics and operating rooms.

3. Ensures staff decontaminates reusable items by determining the appropriate method for removing gross contamination by means of manual cleaning procedures.

5. Ensures staff operate automated reprocessing equipment such as the ultrasonic cleaner and washer/disinfectors in accordance with the device Instructions for Use (IFU).

1. Ensures that staff follow all device specific Instructions for Use (IFU) and set forth Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) while conducting assembly and sterilization procedures.
2. Conducts rounds to review staff adheres to facility regulations regarding application and removal of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
3. Validates skill level of staff to ensure the efficient assembly of a wide variety of instrument trays and sets used for medical procedures including the operating room.
4. Ensures quality checks for damaged or missing items of all instrument sets and arranges for replacements, maintenance, or repair as needed.
5. Coordinates the workflow for assembly to include prioritization from a variety of sterilization phases for intricate surgical trays and microsurgery instruments for the operating room (trays contain large numbers of unique, non-interchangeable, specialized surgical instruments of similar appearance, with minor variations in size, conformation, and nomenclature, but with major variation in application).

2. Participates in obtaining documentation required for competency and or education of SPS staff.

• Performs quality assurance inspections on sterilized RME prior to issue, such as dryness, expiration date, control number, package integrity and labels.

• Utilizes an Instrument management system to assemble and provide a full range of instrument trays and sets for the OR, wards, clinics and special procedures which may encompass numerous different trays and sets, simple to complex sets. He/She inventories and coordinates the replacement of missing instruments on sets and trays, according to the sets instrument listing sheet (Count Sheet).
• Will inspect, identify and sort the instruments/sets according to the size, weight and functional usage. The technician will reassemble and inspect instruments/sets for damage, cleanliness, completeness and usability of materials, according to the manufacturer instructions as set forth in the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
• Selects the appropriate method of sterilization, according to the design constraints of the item and the compatibility of the item with the sterilization agent, manufacturer instructions as set forth in the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), utilizing proper loading techniques in accordance with sterilization method.

• Adheres to facility regulations regarding application and removal of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• Collects and/or receives; cleans and decontaminates a full range of reusable supplies and RME used on nursing units, clinics, OR and Special Procedures units. SPS MST sorts RME and materials by the method of processing, inspects RME for any damage prior to processing, disassembles for cleaning RME with multiple parts, according to the manufacturer instructions as set forth in the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
• SPS MST operates, maintains and adjusts processing equipment such as but not limited to; ultrasonic cleaning machines, washer/ disinfectors, automatic endoscope reprocessors (AERs)and leak testers. This involves but not limited to changing and resetting timers and adjusting steam pressure requirements on sterilization and decontamination cycles, changing filters4) Follows the SPS Infection Control guidelines as they pertain to inspecting, collecting and transporting of infectious materials, are monitored during daily soiled supply and equipment collection activities, including isolation bagging procedures for reprocessing materials.

Major Duties may Include:

• Outpatient coding: Must be able to code and close outpatient encounters at the sustained rate of seventy (70) encounters per workday
• Inpatient coding: Must be able to code and close inpatient treatment files with PRO fees at the sustained rate of 9 records per workday. Must be able to code and close inpatient treatment files without PRO fees at the sustained rate of 13 records per workday
• Surgical coding: Must be able to code and close surgical cases at the standard rate of 25 cases per workday.
• Identifies the principal diagnosis and principal procedure (when applicable) for every inpatient discharge; also identifies significant complications and/or co-morbidities treated or impacting treatment to correctly determine the proper Diagnosis Related Group (DRG). Upon patient admission to the Community Living Center/Nursing Home Care Unit, codes the admission diagnosis for use by unit staff. All diagnoses and procedure codes are selected from the current version of the ICD coding system.
• Conducts re-reviews of codes abstracted for patient encounters (inpatient and outpatient) identified by the VERA committee to determine if based on the documentation the specific VERA coding requirements were followed; corrects coding as needed to ensure proper patient classification in the VERA program.
• Codes inpatient professional fee services for identified inpatient admissions in support of the Medical Care Cost Recovery (MCCR) program. Code selection is based upon strict compliance with regulatory fraud and abuse guidelines and VA specific guidance for optimum allowable reimbursement.
• Establishes the primary and secondary diagnosis and procedure codes for billable outpatient encounters following applicable regulations, instructions, and requirements for allowable reimbursement; links the appropriate diagnosis to the procedure and/or determines level of Evaluation & Management service provided. Understands the nuances of the CPT coding system for Third Party Insurance cost recovery and accurately interprets instructional notations; bundles encounters when appropriate; identifies non-billable encounters.
• Codes all Operating Room procedures reported in the Surgical Package of the VistA hospital system; applies ICD and CPT coding guidelines and selects proper codes using the current code set and the encoder product suite; ensures all procedures file to the appropriate Patient Care Encounter (PCE); adds Anesthesia and Pathology codes to the PCE encounter for all billable surgical cases.
• Updates codes for current inpatient and Contract Nursing Home admissions for quarterly census and as directed for billable long stay admissions to reflect all patient conditions and care up to the census date or to the requested billing date.
• Reviews and codes assigned Fee Service patient encounters (inpatient and outpatient) using the paper or electronic documentation obtained from non-VA facilities such as Community Hospitals, Emergency Rooms, military facilities, etc.
• Codes diagnoses from paper forms for VA registries such as Agent Orange, Ionizing Radiation, Persian Gulf, Prisoner of War, etc.

The incumbent serves as Supervisory Medical Technologist in the Perry Point division of the Pathology and Lab Service and has full supervisory responsibility for the medical technologists and medical technicians in that section.

The primary duties and responsibilities of the Supervisory Medical Technologist- Perry Point, include but are not limited to the following:

• Overall supervision of the following disciplines in the Path & Lab Service: Chemistry, Hematology/Coagulation, Urinalysis, and limited Blood Bank.
• Provides technical guidance to technicians/technologists when quality control or instrument problems occur during the above-mentioned shifts.
• Prepares work schedules and assigns duties to subordinates to ensure efficient and timely performance of all tests and procedures.
• Takes responsibility for the quality control program to ensure that appropriate records are maintained and investigates complaints from hospital staff concerning questionable results.
• Assures that all standards of the College of America Pathologists (CAP) are practiced at all times on the above mentioned shifts, so that the laboratory will continue to qualify for accreditation by CAP.
• Ability to work as a technologist, as needed, and accomplish duties specifically assigned to the technologist in at least two of the areas supervised. Sustains competency in those areas.
