About the role:
As part of a multidisciplinary team, your role involves providing occupational therapy within the BIRT neurobehavioral model to individuals with acquired brain injury (ABI). This includes coordinating with internal and external professionals, family members, and the individuals under their care.
Your Responsibilities as a Occupational Therapist will include:
Specialist Clinical Practice: Operate within a specialised clinical area as an autonomous professional, enhancing your skills and knowledge in neurological rehabilitation, with support and supervision from a senior Occupational Therapist (OT). Accept and uphold professional accountability and responsibility.
Caseload Management: Under the guidance of a senior OT, manage and prioritise a caseload of individuals with complex mental and/or physical health needs, including those exhibiting challenging behaviour.
Occupational Therapy Process: With supervision, carry out the occupational therapy process by utilising evidence-based, service user-centred principles and clinical reasoning to assess, develop treatment plans, implement, and evaluate interventions.
Addressing Occupational Performance: Focus on addressing deficits in occupational performance and skills, facilitating improvements in areas such as self-maintenance, productivity, education, and leisure.
Programme Development and Evaluation: With senior OT support, design care programs, ensure comprehensive handover to rehabilitation support workers or therapy assistants, and monitor, evaluate, and adjust treatments to track progress and ensure the effectiveness of interventions in line with the neurobehavioral model.
Task Delegation: Appropriately delegate tasks based on the competence of colleagues, ensuring proper handover, monitoring, and review.
About you:
Essential Qualifications and Skills:
- Educational Background: Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy.
- Professional Registration: Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
- Assessment and Intervention: Proficient in the knowledge and application of both standardised and non-standardised occupational therapy assessments and interventions.
- Outcome Measures: Understanding of occupational therapy outcome measures.
- Models of Practice: Familiarity with various occupational therapy models of practice.
- Clinical Governance: Basic knowledge of the principles of clinical governance.
- Legislation and Policy Awareness: Understanding of current legislation and policies impacting the clinical area and professional practice.
- Health and Safety: Awareness of health, safety, and risk management principles.
- Research: Basic understanding of research methodologies.
Desirable Qualifications and Skills:
- Educator Training: Completed practice placement educator training or willingness to complete within the first year, as appropriate.
- Professional Membership: Membership with the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT) and Specialist Section Neurological Practice (SSNP).
