The 4B infusion unit is an 8 chair and 3 bed treatment/recovery area within the South Texas Veterans Health Care System, San Antonio, TX at Audie L. Murphy Hospital. 4B Outpatient is a fast- paced unit with a focus of pre/post care of the procedural patient and recovery of outpatient procedural patients.

The 4B Infusion Unit Registered Nurse will primarily work within the outpatient clinic and trained in observation unit care. In this capacity, the RN will administer a variety of intravenous agents to include blood products. The RN will be responsible for routine maintenance of short and long-term intravenous catheters. The Candidates must have the drive and be committed to provide the veterans with efficient, high quality, and safe care in alignment with STVHCS ICARE values. The Chief of SPS plays a leadership role in ongoing systematic evaluation and improvement of quality and effectiveness of SPS program outcomes. The incumbent provides health system-wide leadership for critical and semi-critical RMD, including sterile storage, reprocessing, standard operating procedures (SOP), competency assessment, selection, operation, and maintenance of reprocessing equipment, staff education program for RMDs, and quality management of SPS. The incumbent is responsible for assessing, monitoring, developing, and implementing corrective action plans for instrument processing, decontamination, sterilization, storage, biological monitoring, and high-level disinfection monitoring through an SPS Quality Management System. Additionally, the incumbent maintains oversight and availability for consultation of non-critical RMD. The incumbent assesses the environment, analyzes trends, transmits data, communicates ideas, develops, and implements policies, initiates programs and systems, and collaborates in the management of resources. The incumbent has knowledge in areas of patient care practices, microbiology, asepsis, disinfection/sterilization process, adult education, infectious diseases, communication, program administration and epidemiology. The incumbent has responsibility and oversight of evidence based practice (EBP) infection control relating to sterile processing standards. Specific activities include but are not limited to education program development, evaluating concepts and project development, mentoring staff and medical providers in sterile processing principles and in the implementation of projects, data collection techniques, statistical analysis, and developing evidence based clinical guidelines and protocols. This position is accountable for the SPS as well as oversight of the use of RMD within the VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System and VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs).

• Plan and coordinate medical emergency management exercise programs for the medical group with other entities.
• Execute emergency management exercises to practice and improve emergency response plans and capabilities to include drills, tabletop, full-scale or functional exercises and workshops.
• Develop and maintain relations with tenant unit commanders and officials from federal, state and local emergency response organizations to gain their support and participation in installation exercises.
• Establish and provide emergency exercise directives and/or training to installation and external personnel on all-hazard scenarios or national emergency exercises.
• Evaluate exercises to identify points of conflict and develop workable solutions for improvement.
• Write and maintain the Medical Contingency Response Plan to post information on processes or procedures for handling actual or hypothetical (for exercises) natural or manmade disasters.
• Act as Medical Readiness Action Officer during emergencies and large special events maintaining communications and assisting with development of recommended response actions.

The Academics Coordinator/Nurse Educator is responsible for providing expert, evidence-based education to South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS) employees. They provide educational instruction and training for nursing staff in clinical and outpatient units. The Academics Coordinator understands instructional design, implementation, and application related to education and training. They perform learning needs assessments, develops educational trainings for clinical staff within organization and assumes accountability for the implementation, coordination, and program development related to the support of scholarships and academic affiliations The Academics Coordinator/Nurse Educator is responsible and accountable for the planning, organization, and evaluation of the effectiveness related to clinical, informatics, and/or administrative process changes, analyzing issues impeding change, developing corrective actions to expedite change, and assuring optimum utilization of available resources to maintain a climate conducive to quality patient care and employee satisfaction. They are responsible for the development, oversight, maintenance, training, data analysis and validation, and report generation as related to the scholarship and academic affiliation programs as outlines by the Healthcare Retention and Recruitment Office to the Scholarship and Clinical Education (S&CE) national office, the Office of Academic Affiliations, and their related Veterans Health Administration (VHA) directives.

In addition, they utilize a team approach when interacting with multidisciplinary teams and university affiliates. The Academics Coordinator/Nurse Educator manages the scholarship program by assisting applicants for successful submission of application packets and provides timely and accurate communication to the Veterans Integrated Systems Network (VISN) and national representatives. They mentor recipients to successful completion of their programs and communicates for timely processing of payments and guides staff towards appropriate clinical areas for preceptorship. The Academics Coordinator/Nurse Educator adheres to established policies, standards of care, and standards of practice managing scholarship funds and regulated affiliation agreements. They collaborate with leadership and unit managers to identify educational training needs for staff, while supporting activities that foster competence, critical thinking, and decision making and provide consultation and collaboration through the participation within organizational committees.

The Academics Coordinator/Nurse Educator is responsible and accountable for the development and delivery of Nursing Service staff professional development activities and will perform administrative coordination of various and numerous academic affiliation placements and on boarding process, including coordination and collaboration with nurse educators, HR, and or other relevant individuals and designees. They will provide support for the establishment and/or control of associated health affiliation agreements and will coordinate and provide continuing education programs designed for career advancement using innovation and creativity. The Academic Coordinator/Nurse Educator's additional responsibilities consist of overall support to all nursing education programs to include and not limited to (1) New Employee Orientation for Nursing (NEON) (2) VA Student Trainee Experience program (VA-STEP) (3) Student Nurse Technician Program (SNT) (4) Graduate Nurse Technician Program (GNT) (5) Registered Nurse Transition To Practice Residency Program (RNTTP) (6) Nurse Recruitment Program (7) Continuing Education Program/Agent in Place (8) Nursing Leadership Program (9) Nursing Education workshops and courses and (10) the Dedicated Education Unit Program. Major duties and responsibilities include:

• Receives, stores and ships bin and bulk supplies, materials and equipment;
• Prepares shipping and inventory documents for manual or automated inventory systems;
• Selects specific storage locations within framework of general warehousing plan;
• Rotates stock, check for outdated materials and maintains the appropriate safeguards and temperature controls;
• Handles delivering and warehousing materials including hazardous, flammable and temperature sensitive products;
• Participates in conducting inventory of stock on hand and communicates discrepancies;
• Ensures products and shelving are marked with corresponding identification numbers;
• Load and unload shipments from trucks and other material conveyances;
• Makes off-site deliveries in motor vehicles typically with a gross weight of less than 4500 pounds;
