The Emergency Department Registered Nurse is responsible for providing competent, evidence-based care to assigned patients. Delegate and supervise basic nursing care of licensed practical nurses and unlicensed assistive personnel. The Registered Nurse will assist in directing the provision of nursing education, orientation, competencies and provide quality improvement and outcomes utilization. Provide urgent and emergent care to patients with acute and/or chronic medical, surgical, and psychiatric conditions. Nursing care ranges from basic nursing care to stabilization, resuscitation, and life-support measures.

The Registered Nurse is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing care. The RN will assess the patient by collecting pertinent data or information, including the triage of patients based on the five-level triage system to prioritize patients that require more immediate care. The RN will use the assessment data to determine diagnosis, problems, and other concerns. The RN will identify expected outcomes to develop a collaborative and individualized plan for each patient. The Tele Emergency Care Registered Nurse will implement that plan, including care coordination, health teaching, and health promotion. The RN will evaluate the progress toward achieving the expected goal and outcomes and adjust the plan as necessary.
Tele Emergency Care Registered Nurse will support the VISN 19 Tele-Emergency Care under the guidance of the Veterans Health Administration, centered at the Fort Harrison VAMC, which provides support health care services to veteran patients across the continuum of care in both home and institutional settings. The RN will support the location to and from which care is delivered, including but not limited to the veterans home, VA clinical locations, and provider alternate worksites. The RN will provide direct care and counseling for veterans through a virtual care system for the promotion and maintenance of health and prevention of illness based on the application of the nursing process which include telephone triage, systematic data gathering, assessment, use of appropriate nursing judgement, and evaluation of human responses to actual or potential health problems.
Recommendations may be emergent and include those to preserve life, prevent disability, or promote health and well-being, including e911 activation, transfer to an emergency care licensed independent provider, teaching and counseling. The RN will collaborate with other members of the expanded health care team, facilitate coordination and transition of care between services, and involve the patient and family in the decision-making process. The RN will minimize fragmentation of healthcare delivery and optimize quality of patient and family outcomes in a cost-effective manner. The RN will work effectively with all levels of staff and provide coverage for other Tele-EC RNs when they are unavailable to perform these duties.
