The NP is a licensed independent practitioner with advanced education and national certification who provides evidence- based care for a population of patients.
Major duties and responsibilities of the position include, but not limited to:
- The nurse is responsible and accountable for individual nursing practice and determines the appropriate delegation of tasks consistent with the nurse's obligation to provide optimal care (ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses).
- Provides a full range of nursing care to patients with complex care needs utilizing the nursing process based on the ANA Standards of Nursing Practice.
- Utilizes clinical assessments to develop plans of care, which reflect therapeutic, educational, preventative, and rehabilitative aspects of care.
- Performs a comprehensive patient assessment including health history, physical examination, evaluations of deviations from the norm and age specific disease screening, immunizations, and health counseling.
- Formulates differential diagnosis and initiates appropriate intervention based on physical finds.
- Refer Veterans to specialty clinics when indicated. Orders and evaluates results of screening and diagnostic tests pertinent to patient complaints and physical findings.
