About the role

Balfour Beatty are looking for a Senior Health and Safety Advisor to join our Major Projects Team on the Old Oak Common Project in London.

HS2’s station construction partner, Balfour Beatty VINCI Systra joint venture (BBVS) are leading the construction of HS2’s new Old Oak Common Station. Set to be the best connected and largest new railway stations ever built in the UK, Old Oak Common will become one of the country’s most vital transport super hubs. The station will have 14 platforms, a mix of six high speed and eight conventional service platforms, with an 850m-long station box. It is expected to be one of the busiest railway stations in the country with high speed rail services to the midlands, Scotland and the North and access to central London and Heathrow via the Crossrail Elizabeth Line.

The Senior Health and Safety Advisor will provide risk-based assurance that the project is compliant with all HSES requirements and provide expert HSES technical advice, guidance, and support.

What you'll be doing

• Implement Business Unit strategy through visible leadership to drive the delivery of Safe at Heart.
• Provide project teams with expert HSW technical advice, guidance and support.
• Collaboratively engage with both internal & external customers and the supply chain to promote zero harm delivery.
• Undertake regular site inspections as per project risk matrix and produce formal reports using the Project Portal to record HSW inspections.
• Undertake regular checks on Health and Safety Risk Management highlighting risks and opportunities.
• Provide expert support to investigate accidents, incidents and near miss events in accordance with Balfour Beatty Group Standards and HS2 requirements.
• Engage and develop relationships with design & engineering teams to eliminate and reduce HSW risk through design.
• Challenge the norm by innovating and improving the way we work, whilst keeping pace with industry change and promote successes.
• Provide support and mentoring to other HSW colleagues in their development.

Who we're looking for

Required experience/Qualifications:

• Relevant Health & Safety Diploma, NVQ or Degree (or equivalent level 6 qualification).
• Strong understanding of UK Health and Safety Regulatory Framework.
• Ability to influence and promote a positive HSW culture by engaging and conversing at all levels.
• Ability to undertake project planning, project management and work to budgets.
• Competence in incident investigation.
• Ability to prepare formal written reports on HSW topics.
• Broad experience of complex construction and civils projects (or experience from an equivalent sector)

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced, flexible and forward thinking Clinical Endoscopist/trainee Clinical Endoscopists to join us at Barts Health depending on experience/qualification. This will cover Royal London and Mile End Hospital Endoscopy Units. Support for education and mentoring will be provided for the successful candidate to be able to achieve the band 8a (if as band 7).

The qualified Clinical Endoscopist will perform Diagnostic Upper GI endoscopy, and Lower GI endoscopy (or working towards) with JAG certification. The qualified Clinical Endoscopist, if not a qualified non-medical prescriber will be supported to qualify as a prescriber once JAG qualification has been obtained. The qualified Clinical Endoscopist will undertake procedures independently once deemed competent by the Clinical Lead, and act as a mentor to trainees and will be supported to complete train the trainer.

If interested in becoming a trainee, you will be required to complete a training programme of approximately 18-24 months for dual modality. This will include attendance at training courses, completion of practical assessments, JAG training and accreditation by JAG as an independent Endoscopist for upper GI & lower GI endoscopy procedures. You'll work with the MDT and contribute to development, management and delivery of a high quality general and specialist mixed GI endoscopy service. Endoscopy experience or equivalent knowledge would be required to be eligible for this post.

The Post holder will take an active role in ensuring Endoscopy delivers the highest standards of clinical care. This will include supporting the implementation of new nationally agreed directives, programmes, audit and seeking routes to improve/develop the service and role of Endoscopy Nurse or Allied health professional.

The Clinical Endoscopist will be accountable for the care of eligible patients referred for Endoscopy and perform Diagnostic procedure. Responsible for patient post procedure and ensure safe discharge from department.

The post holder will be allocated independent weekly lists across both Royal London Hospital and Mile End Hospital and admin sessions with an agreed job plan.

If the post holder is a trainee they will be allocated specific training lists to undertake supervised scopes as part of the training programme within the agreed time period, a proportion of which should be unassisted. Evidence will be required of the completion rate/outcomes of completed endoscopies, including patient vasovagal episodes, bleeding problems, unplanned admissions and the use of reversal agent. The key performance indicators should be verified and signed off by the Endoscopy Clinical Supervisor and Clinical Lead. The post holder should be observed by their mentor undertaking endoscopies and there is a requirement to submit formative assessments during the training period.

The Senior Sister/ Charge Nurse will be expected to: To lead the nursing workforce on a shift by shift basis, by taking charge of the department (or continuing accountability if this is delegated) Manage patient flows, ensuring safety and escalating potential issues appropriately Guiding the activity of nursing, medical and other staff to ensure rapid assessment, treatment and disposal of patients. Participate in educational and training programmes for junior nursing staff and students, including acting as a preceptor / mentor where required. Supervise staff to ensure that high standards of nursing care are delivered. Be able to work independently as an expert practitioner in all areas of the Emergency Department. DEPARTMENTAL MANAGEMENT The post holder is part of a team with responsibility for the management of the Emergency Department on a shift basis. That delegated responsibilities for staff appraisal and development are carried out. More junior staff are kept informed of developments. Staff are debriefed after stressful or critical incidents. Stock levels are checked and re-ordered to appropriate levels. Good relationships with other departments and outside agencies are maintained. Sickness is reported in accordance with Trust procedures. EDUCATION AND TRAINING The Senior Sister / Charge Nurse participates in the development and delivery of educational and training programmes for more junior staff and student nurses and for clinical supervision to more junior staff. He/she provides on-the-job training to staff and assesses training needs of staff under his/her supervision. The Senior Sister / Charge Nurse will participate in the training of staff to: Respond appropriately to major incidents Develop their scope of professional practice such that they have the skills to undertake a variety of tasks including IV drug administration, venepuncture and cannulation, suturing, application of plaster casts, 12 lead ECG recording etc. Deal with patients who are potentially violent in accordance with Trust Policy and Guidance. Manage sick children and their carers who attend the department. Manage mentally ill patients, and have a good knowledge of the Mental Health Act and the issues that surround holding patients under Common Law vis--vis the Mental Capacity Act (2005) Effectively participate in CPR and the resuscitation of the severely injured. Identify and respond to common abnormalities on cardiac monitors SERVICE DEVELOPMENT The Senior Sister / Charge Nurse is expected to make recommendations for changes, which will improve the service in the Department. They also participate in the development and implementation of new working practices. MOTIVATION AND MORALE The Senior Sister / Charge Nurse has an important role in motivating staff and maintaining high morale. The Nurse in Charge must encourage a flexible approach to problems/situations and promote a can do attitude.
