What will I do in this position if hired?

In this position, you will provide medical expertise in support of the FEMA mission to help people before, during and after disasters. Typical assignments include:

• Developing and implementing an occupational health program to ensure workforce medical protection,
• Managing agency vaccination program,
• Establishing remote clinics for the deployed workforce and provide routine and emergency care during disaster,
• Conducting injury and illness surveillance during deployments,
• Managing automated external defibrillator (AED) and trauma kit program.
• Managing CBRN medical countermeasures program for preparedness and response to pandemics and CBRN attacks.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

• Supportive individual counseling to Caregivers; Caregiver/Veteran couple's counseling when clinically indicated.
• Caregiver support groups; these may occur at the facility and/or in the community

• Provide coverage for and assist, when needed, the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC).

• Active member of the Caregiver Advisory Board and serves as a liaison between the VA and community agencies; this includes participating in caregiver support activities in the local community and state to promote and recognize the role of the caregiver.
• Supports the planning and implementation of the events and programs associated with annual National Family Caregivers Month every November; that includes announcement and advertising of month-long activities, mobilization of participants, educational sessions, caregiver recognition events and caregiver support programs.

Major Duties:

• Creating processes for organizing and maintaining the RRTP's clinical programming, adhering to the requirements found in MHRRTP Directive 1162.02.
• Facilitating routing meetings that promote bidirectional communication, review of performance standards, ameliorates an administrative barrier to programming and providing recommendations to be more successful with metrics.
• Providing guidance on clinic builds, productivity standards, productivity reviews, as well as Labor Mapping certifications.
• Providing recommendations related to programming needs including FTEE needed to support programming by census.
• Performing demand/capacity analysis, templating and has indirect authority to ensure scheduling operations of patients are upheld in clinic flow for highest patient outcomes and satisfaction.

• The Nurse II Inpatient Mental Health (MH) Registered Nurse (RN) provides and leads the provision of competent, evidence-based care, the psychiatric MH nurse independently provides patient-centered and recovery-oriented care, milieu management, and maintains self-awareness while caring for patients living with MH conditions.
• Facilitate shift reports, warm hand-offs, and nurse-led psychoeducational groups; use therapeutic communication techniques, practice de-escalation techniques, and utilize recovery-oriented language.
• The nurse actively participates in MH interdisciplinary treatment team, MH Environment of Care rounds, assumes team lead for psychiatric emergencies, reports and assists in resolving safety concerns, and documents nursing assessments, nursing plan of care, patient safety observations, and environmental safety rounds according to facility policy.

Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:

• Reviews existing stock and manufacturers' catalogs, manuals and listings to obtain substitute or interchangeable items to supply in lieu of items requisitioned.
• Communicates with customers and vendors to obtain information regarding availability and functionality of non-expandable equipment and supplies.
• Provides guidance to customers on identification of material through research of original equipment manufacturers part catalog for part numbers, descriptions, and size of parts needed.
• Processes applicable catalog update transactions in accordance with current published procedures.
• Periodically, reviews assigned manufacturers code and part numbers for continued validity and takes necessary action to update, delete, or dispose of in accordance with published guidelines.
• Interacts with clinical and administrative customers to ensure issues and needs are identified and either resolved or escalated to supervisors or Inventory Management Specialists as needed.
• Communicates to the lead or supervisor any concerns related to supplies, equipment and procedures, providing information as needed orally or in writing regarding customer or external stakeholder issues, general telephone inquiries and visitor referrals.
• Coordinates drop-off of new or transferred equipment and pick up of turn in equipment; scanner pick up and drop off for annual Electronic Inventory Listing (EIL) inventory; and delivery times and area with contractors and vendors with other VA activities, contractors or manufacturers through personal transactions.

The incumbent provides high-level administrative support to MAS towards the efficient functioning of all programs and services under the purview of the Service. Due to the magnitude of the programs and services involved and with an authorized FTEE of approximately 450, the incumbent assists the Chief and Assistant Chief of MAS by collecting, analyzing, and displaying information/data in a format ready for decision making.

• Plans, directs, and controls long-term and short-term MAS administrative activities, including policies and procedures, personnel

  exceptional Veteran experience.

  sent to MAS from internal and external customers.
• Provides technical and administrative supervision to a unit of three Program Analysts GS 9/11 and two Program Support Assistants GS-7.
• Oversees the daily operations of the unit, ensures that agency policies and procedures are being followed, develops
  performance standards, and evaluates work performance of subordinates.

The Occupational Health Nurse will provide emergency assessment, diagnosis and initial treatment of injuries or illnesses. The nurse also administers life-saving procedures including cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other first aid procedures and provides information on health related issues. 

Major Duties Include:

Occupational Health Nurse Services

• Providing health care maintenance, diagnostic and therapeutic services, education and counseling while performing Occupational Health Nurse duties.
• Performing emergency assessment, diagnosis and initial treatment of injury or illness. Notifies the Attending Physician in cases where initial treatment is beyond the competence or scope of the incumbent for advice and assistance, and based on the circumstances, to expedite the conveyance of the patient to a physician or suitable medical facility at the request of or on behalf of the patient.
• Administering lifesaving procedures including cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other emergency first aid procedures to stabilize a patient. Must be fully knowledgeable in the areas of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other lifesaving procedures.
• Performing routine diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, monitoring stress levels and evaluating the treatment. Provides emotional support to the patient and family by providing information on the treatment. Performs electrocardiograms for patients to diagnose abnormalities of a heart condition. Refers patients to their personal physicians as necessary.
• Dispensing or performing first aid or palliative treatment for conditions to enable the employee to complete the current work shift before consulting with their personal physician. Administers certain treatments such as allergens, vaccines, vitamins and similar treatments requested by the employee's private physician and in accordance with instruction of the OAP. Administers required immunizations as requested.
• Providing standard healthcare maintenance, diagnostic/therapeutic services, education and counseling to patients.

Evaluates and Instructs Patients on Routine and Emergent Care

• Encouraging and informing patients of ways to maintain or improve their health status through education and counseling and performs other routine general nurse duties. 

Serves as an Information Resource

• Serving as a health informational resource to Members of Congress, Staff and visitors for specialized information related to a particular patient population, health issue or clinical protocol. Maintains accurate, complete and confidential medical records on all patients diagnosed or treated and ensures proper security of these records.
• Maintains a supply of emergency drugs in an Emergency Drug Box and ensures all drugs and supplies are current and maintains proper security of the Emergency Drug Box and Supplies.
• Maintains an automated data base of patients treated and operates a personal computer for required and data input and retrieval. Conducts effective observations, prepares personal histories or uses other assessment measurement devices to gather information that portrays the client's physical health.

Must be reliable, adaptable, able to prioritize patient privacy, and capable to work independently and/or with a group.
