Background Caring for the health and wellbeing of all our people is one of the key themes of our People Strategy. The need for a coherent offer that addresses physical, financial, emotional and psychological wellbeing needs is of even greater importance in light of the pandemic and the impact it has had on colleagues in the last few months and the expectation of on-going impact for next 18 24 months. Research evidence from previous pandemics (e.g. SARS) (e.g. Ricci-Cabello et al, 2020) suggests that up to about 50% of the LGT workforce is likely to experience significant psychological distress over the coming year and beyond. There is a need to both promote and normalise the message that it is ok to not be ok, thus destigmatising the importance of self-care and seeking psychological support. Research also suggests that improved psychological well-being in staff leads to improved staff retention (Wright and Cropanzo, 2004) and safer, more compassionate services (Francis, 2013).
