MEDVAMC Deputy Chief of Staff - Operations
Represents the Chief of Staff (COS) in all aspects of administrative leadership,
including, but not limited to:

Duties include:
The position will provide anesthesia coverage for all specialties of surgery, beside specializing in cardiac
surgeries in a care team approach. Must have experience with anesthetic management for cardiac,
Thoracic, and major vascular procedures and providing anesthesia for insertion of ventricular assist
devices and ECMO.
This position will also be experienced in performing neuraxial (epidural and spinal) anesthesia. Additional
responsibilities include the provision of anesthetic care including transesophageal echocardiography for

Duties of the ICC Chief:

The Associate Chief of Staff for Rehabilitation, Extended Care, and Diagnostics (REC-D) Integrated Clinical Community (ICC) Service provides oversight of clinical and non-clinical staff and operations across a variety of locations including the main medical center and Community Based Outpatient Clinics. The major duties of the position include but are not limited to:

• Utilizes knowledge of laundry plant policies, procedures, facilities and operations associated with medical center laundry functions that cover a major region in order to plan and carry out the operations and scheduling requirements of the laundry plant to meet customer requirements and delivery times;
• Supervises a wage grade workforce through subordinate supervisors/leaders by following personnel management policies and procedures, union contracts, special emphasis programs, etc.;

The Minneapolis VA Health Care System is seeking a Board Certified/Board Eligible physician to work as the Medical Director of the Community Living Center (CLC). Responsibilities include medical direction of the CLC program, supervision of provider staff Physicians and Nurse Practitioners, and leadership related to quality improvement projects and accreditation programs.

The Minneapolis CLC is an 80 bed program, consisting of 3 units providing various levels of transitional and long term care. There is a specialized secured memory care unit within the CLC with a 10 bed capacity. The main source of referrals to the program is internal to the medical center, with residents having an average length of stay between 30 and 40 days. The CLC is staffed by an interdisciplinary team consisting of provider staff (MD, NP), occupational therapy, nursing, physical therapy, psychology, speech and language therapy and social work.

In addition to CLC, the incumbent will serve as a liaison to the provider staff at the affiliated State Veterans Homes. The Incumbent will also partner with an inpatient Hospice and Palliative care program located in a portion of the CLC.
The Minneapolis CLC program participates in training of internal medicine residents, hospice and palliative care fellows and other trainees as assigned.

We are seeking applicants who are board-certified in Internal Medicine, Palliative Medicine, Geriatrics or other related field and have a strong interest in management, supervision and leadership.

• Conducts examinations and provides examination reports and opinions used by the Veterans Benefits Administration.
• Perform examinations on special Veteran populations including Gulf War Registry, Environmental Hazards Registry and other legally required examinations.
• Provide reports that include thorough records review, comprehensive history, and detailed physical examinations, as well as interpretation of appropriate diagnostic studies.
• Provide medical opinions that are well reasoned and worded to enable adjudication by non-medical adjudicating officials of the Veterans Benefits Administration and courts.
• Conducts, completes and releases all reports in a timely manner and within established quality guidelines.
• Develop and maintain familiarity with the disability process and serve as subject matter expert to other services in the facility.
• Engage in DMA related and quality review procedures and conduct other C&P related duties as outlined by the Section Chief.
• Work collaboratively with other providers in the section.
• Engages in continuous process improvements in support of a high reliability organization.

• Aligns the vision, direction, and objectives of the ONS nursing leadership and nursing clinical practice with ambulatory care programs and committees to elevate the quality of professional nursing practice throughout the VHA health care system and in support of the VHA Nursing Workforce Strategic Plan and in collaboration with other ONS portfolios.
• Communicates and fosters effective labor management partnerships.
• Provides analysis and reporting of clinical practice data, developing action plans and interventions, and assesses results of actions in follow up.
• Engages in succession planning, including mentoring and coaching others into roles within and external to ONS.

• Facilitates multiple teams to achieve desired outcomes, creating, implementing, and measuring large complex projects within an integrated health system.
• Demonstrates effective oral and written communication and human interpersonal skills, as evidenced by communicating clearly, being able to work with diverse constituencies, developing rapport with people at all levels of the organization, and having the ability to clearly communicate goals, objectives, and progress in meeting milestones.

• Responds to internal and external communications and maintains knowledge of and communicating activities through communication with VA and non-VA stakeholders.
• Promotes the development, operationalization, and sustainment of strong partnerships between VA and external stakeholders through national ambulatory care-related nursing committees and workgroups with representation from national nursing leaders to end users to advance standardization and excellence.
