The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) is a Registered Nurse who is directly accountable to the Nurse Manager (NM). The primary focus of this position is providing oversight and leadership for all local, VISN 12 and National initiatives that involve Clinical Contact Center (CCC) Triage ensuring VISN 12 CCC Triage remains a leader in the nation for Clinical Contact Center services and quality Veteran Care. While working in partnership with the NM, additional ANMs, Administrative Officer, Program Analyst and Nurse Educators. Additional duties include functioning as a Supervisor and Clinical Coordinator, which may include direct clinical coverage, for the operations of CCC Triage. The ANM may additionally be involved in management, supervision and evaluation of care delivered by Registered Nurses and Medical Support Assistants.
The ANM demonstrates a high level of clinical expertise, leadership and creative approaches to manage the complex care of the Veteran population and program requirements. Demonstrates the ability to lead and direct diverse and dynamic groups of staff in the delivery of safe and effective patient care. The ANM applies clinical skills necessary to identify, coordinate and/or identify discipline -specific education, as well as training, leadership, professional staff development and emerging needs to all levels of staff. This RN is a nurse supervisor and can provide oversight for the administration of leave, counseling and disciplinary action in collaboration with the ANM and NM. The ANM may act as the NM in her/his absence. Assumes an active role in labor-management partnership and supports EEO principles and programs. Demonstrates effective conflict resolution/management skills. Secondary responsibilities include participating in the hiring process, modeling and assuring positive behavior, partnering on the initial and on-going CCC Triage staff competency program, supervising and evaluating care delivery by all nursing staff and employees assigned to the unit via nurse proficiencies and/or performance evaluations. In partnership with the NM, oversees staffing effectiveness, daily staffing schedules and budget performance, monitors the quality of care delivered by means of quality indicators such as RN Callback Time, Average Speed of Answer and Abandonment Rate and ensures quality improvement initiatives and evidence-based nursing standards of practice are carried out on a day to day basis.
The ANM collaborates with the ANMs and NM in the professional development of clinically competent staff. Leading and monitoring staff orientation processes and assisting in the Performance Improvement (P1) processes, monitoring of Pt projects, All Employee Survey results, Press Ganey Responses and other ongoing initiatives to ensure quality care to the Veteran population. Serves as a coach to all members of staff in career development. The ANM contributes to the unit's goal of life-long learning and participates in activities and support succession planning. Promotes, creates, demonstrates and ensures a culturally diverse workforce in which the values and needs of all individuals are respected. The ANM works with the other ANMs and NM to facilitate daily staff huddles and conducts staff meetings to facilitate communication, disseminate information, promote interdisciplinary interaction and augment problem solving.
The ANM participates in the development, review and revision of the Nursing policies and procedures to ensure compliance; supports implementation of these polices, actively contributes to performance measures for the VAMC, VISN and VHA. Assurance is made for ongoing readiness with regulatory bodies/agencies both internal and external to VHA, all while ensuring the ANA code of Ethics for Nurses is followed.
