The Pharmacist Supervisor is responsible for the overall supervision of all professional and administrative operations and personnel in the inpatient section of pharmacy. This includes coordinating the activities of staff in the inpatient section to ensure compliance with all policies and procedures established by the Department of Veterans Affairs. The inpatient section provides full pharmaceutical services to all inpatients and to patients being discharged or going on pass from the hospital. Inpatient Services are provided twenty-four hours daily for seven days a week. In addition to maintaining an efficient operation based upon current requirements, this person must be able to analyze trends and develop plans and strategies for future needs.

Administrative/Supervisory

• Supervises all professional and nonprofessional staff assigned to the inpatient section, developing schedules to distribute staff and accomplish tasks in all areas of the section.
• Administers attendance and leave, coordinating vacation schedules, military leave, extended sick leave, etc. This includes the efficient use of temporary and part-time personnel and volunteers.
• Develops and revises service or station policies to reflect current practice, meet all needs, and comply with established medical center and central office requirements.
• Ensures accountability and integrity of drugs through periodically inspection and monitoring. This includes the proper handling of controlled substances. Interviews applicants for certain pharmacy positions and makes recommendations for selection to upper management. Evaluates certain pharmacy employees based upon systematic review of Performance using computer generated reports, spot checks on actual work performed, input from other employees or hospital personnel. Evaluation includes recommendations for promotion or reassignment, performance awards, and appropriate action in case of inferior work.

• Serves as an authority on drug usage, interactions, overdoses, and compliance to medical staff, pharmacy staff, and students.
• Performs quality assurance audits, drug utilization review activities, and develops reporting mechanisms to assure cost effective use of medications.
• Works with clinical pharmacy coordinator(s) to expand clinical activities.
• Develops mechanisms to measure outcome of interventions and ways to report results through proper administrative channels.

• Provides training and education to pharmacy staff, pharmacy residents and students on policies and procedures.
• Oversees and directly participates in the training of new staff and in the continuing education process to ensure staff can demonstrate knowledge and skills required to perform their duties.
• Serves as a preceptor to pharmacy students and residents in accordance with established policies.
• Participates in formal and informal education programs of the service.

• A. Supervisory Activities:
• i. Develop the work schedule, plan and grant leave and rotate duties of the pharmacy technician staff. Ensures that personnel are scheduled in such a way as to provide consistency of coverage and to accommodate planned leave and promote employee morale.
• ii. Effectively manages technical staff to ensure workflow is optimized within assigned service area. Continuously analyzes and reassesses priorities, redirecting staff to ensure that workload demands are accomplished in the most effective, efficient, and economic manner possible.
• iii. Coordinate day-to-day maintenance and operation of pharmacy area equipment and automation.
• iv. Oversee the narcotic vault(s) and other specialty areas as required and assigned.
• v. Support with infusion services staffing, ancillary needs, as required and assigned.

• ix. Recommend counseling and disciplinary action based upon conduct under the supervision of the Chief of Pharmacy Supervisor with guidance from Employee Labor Relations.
• x. Conduct technician meetings to ensure proper updates of departmental and hospital communications.
• xi. Assist in the development of policies and procedures and participate in departmental goal planning and quality improvement activities.
• xii. Will perform any duties of a lower grade pharmacy technician when the needs of the service require.

• i. Prepare various management reports as delegated to include, but not limited to: High-cost drug inventory, ward stock, automation, competency, and controlled substance reports.
• ii. Assists pharmacy supervisors and staff to identify areas of duplication of efforts and develops solutions to streamline processes, reduce waste, save costs, and improve patient care.
• iii. Develop and implement necessary administrative audits such as wait time audits and workflow analysis.
• iv. Effectively evaluates pharmacy activities to assist management to obtain short- and long-range objectives and goals.

• i. Assists in preparation of national, local, and special accreditations of pharmacy service (Joint Commission, Inspector General, Controlled Substance Inspections, Drug Enforcement Agency). This includes documenting record updates, development of specific training and preparation for staff and compliance of policy and procedures.
• ii. Proactively evaluates and analyzes data for self-driven (independent) performance improvement projects, workload analysis and statistical reports.
• iii. Encourages Pharmacy Technicians to report actual and/or potential medication errors or adverse events and participates in quality improvement initiatives to promote patient safety.

Requires technical knowledge of drug and medication brand names, generic names/chemical names, general and special storage requirements, expiration date requirements, manufacturer/distributor sources, dosage forms, applicable systems of weights and measures, and medical terminology. Working knowledge of drug use and availability of dosage forms, to assist the pharmacist in solving potential problems.
• ii. Knowledge of laws, regulations, and official policy concerning drug procurement and security to conform to legal and professional requirements of pharmacy practice.
