The Academics Coordinator/Nurse Educator is responsible for providing expert, evidence-based education to South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS) employees. They provide educational instruction and training for nursing staff in clinical and outpatient units. The Academics Coordinator understands instructional design, implementation, and application related to education and training. They perform learning needs assessments, develops educational trainings for clinical staff within organization and assumes accountability for the implementation, coordination, and program development related to the support of scholarships and academic affiliations The Academics Coordinator/Nurse Educator is responsible and accountable for the planning, organization, and evaluation of the effectiveness related to clinical, informatics, and/or administrative process changes, analyzing issues impeding change, developing corrective actions to expedite change, and assuring optimum utilization of available resources to maintain a climate conducive to quality patient care and employee satisfaction. They are responsible for the development, oversight, maintenance, training, data analysis and validation, and report generation as related to the scholarship and academic affiliation programs as outlines by the Healthcare Retention and Recruitment Office to the Scholarship and Clinical Education (S&CE) national office, the Office of Academic Affiliations, and their related Veterans Health Administration (VHA) directives.
In addition, they utilize a team approach when interacting with multidisciplinary teams and university affiliates. The Academics Coordinator/Nurse Educator manages the scholarship program by assisting applicants for successful submission of application packets and provides timely and accurate communication to the Veterans Integrated Systems Network (VISN) and national representatives. They mentor recipients to successful completion of their programs and communicates for timely processing of payments and guides staff towards appropriate clinical areas for preceptorship. The Academics Coordinator/Nurse Educator adheres to established policies, standards of care, and standards of practice managing scholarship funds and regulated affiliation agreements. They collaborate with leadership and unit managers to identify educational training needs for staff, while supporting activities that foster competence, critical thinking, and decision making and provide consultation and collaboration through the participation within organizational committees.
The Academics Coordinator/Nurse Educator is responsible and accountable for the development and delivery of Nursing Service staff professional development activities and will perform administrative coordination of various and numerous academic affiliation placements and on boarding process, including coordination and collaboration with nurse educators, HR, and or other relevant individuals and designees. They will provide support for the establishment and/or control of associated health affiliation agreements and will coordinate and provide continuing education programs designed for career advancement using innovation and creativity. The Academic Coordinator/Nurse Educator's additional responsibilities consist of overall support to all nursing education programs to include and not limited to (1) New Employee Orientation for Nursing (NEON) (2) VA Student Trainee Experience program (VA-STEP) (3) Student Nurse Technician Program (SNT) (4) Graduate Nurse Technician Program (GNT) (5) Registered Nurse Transition To Practice Residency Program (RNTTP) (6) Nurse Recruitment Program (7) Continuing Education Program/Agent in Place (8) Nursing Leadership Program (9) Nursing Education workshops and courses and (10) the Dedicated Education Unit Program. Participates in STVHCS Nursing Service and Nursing Education initiatives evidence-based practice projects implementation, Charge Nurse Program, Nursing Competency development, and Nursing Simulation activities.
