Position: Trainee Chef

Our client is an independent, day and boarding, sixth form college and is part of a group of elite educational establishments. They offer a gold standard A-level programme in traditional subjects providing the best academic preparation for entry into the world's most competitive universities.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Trainee Chef to assist the Head Chef and Second Chef in the kitchen operation and ensure the Colleges outstanding reputation for food quality is always maintained. This is a full time position working 44 weeks per year. Holiday is taken outside of term time and specific courses they run, (Easter/Summer courses). It's paid at an hourly rate inclusive of holiday entitlement.
Holiday is 20 days +8 statutory bank holidays which can be taken in the 3 weeks break at Christmas, 1 week at Easter and 2 weeks at the end of the summer holiday.
The current rota is a 2 week rolling rota.
Week 1
8.00am - 4.30pm Mon-Fri
Week 2
8.00am - 4.30pm Mon-Thurs
8.00am - 2.00pm + 5.00pm - 8.00pm Saturday
Key Responsibilities
- Ensuring compliance to sanitation. Hygiene, health and safety legislation and organisational quality requirements
- Help to coordinate food preparation
- Help to prepare and cook food as well as salad prep
- Help with quality management of food
- Help with general cleaning required in the kitchen
- Effective liaison, support and assistance with the organisation
- Assist generally in the kitchen and dining room as directed
- Receive training so you can assist with accurate records, ordering and menu planning as agreed
- Set an example for the catering team of commitment, work ethic and personal character
- Adhere to all organisational policies and procedures
- From time to time you may be expected to be part of special projects as are reasonably required of your job role
- You are responsible for your allocated workload and must meet all targets as agreed with you Line Manager. You must contribute towards the smooth running of the organisational generally.
- Working within a small team within a fast-paced and pressurised environment
- Assisting with the preparation of food ensuring they match menu specifications and meet the quality standard and presentation
- Being trained and adhering to Food Safety Standards, maintaining high levels of cleanliness in the kitchen at all times - we expect to maintain a 5* Hygiene rating at all times.
Qualifications
- Level 1 and 2 Food Safety Awards
- Minimum 6 months relevant experience
- Awareness of manual handling techniques
- Awareness of Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) and chemical safety
- Experience of kitchen equipment, including dangerous equipment such as knives
- Competent level of English spoken and written Knowledge and Experience
- Attention to detail and ability to deliver high-quality work
- Excellent written and spoken English with good communication skills
