An opportunity has arisen in the Cancer Pharmacy Team for a Pharmacy technician to develop their senior and management skills with a Maternity Cover vacancy to join our team based at the Horton Hospital.

You will be enthusiastic, highly motivated, experienced and proactive Pharmacy Technician, with excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal Skills, to join Oxford Cancer & Haematology Centre.

We provide day case dispensing in our Satellite pharmacy in Oxford and at Horton Hospital in Banbury and have a team of pharmacists and technicians providing clinical pharmacy services.



The postholder will be required to be able to work cross sites to cover work demand.

Key roles include:

To deputise for the Advanced Cancer Clinical Pharmacy Technician and Operational Manager.

Delivery and manage the Medicine Management service to adult cancer in-patients, out-patients, and day case patients

The Oxford Cancer Centre, and its North Oxfordshire pharmacy services provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care for patients with cancer within Oxfordshire and surrounding areas. These services include: Oncology, Clinical Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplant unit, In-patient and Outpatient services, Specialist palliative care service, pain relief unit, and a Cancer Research UK Clinical Research unit. The centre is an Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre (ECMC) and a Biomedical Research Centre (BMRC).



Management role
1. To assist the WBT Manager and Advanced Cancer Clinical Pharmacy Technician and Operational Manager in maintaining a safe and effective Medicines Management service to all wards and DTU’s across the Haematology and Oncology Directorate at Oxford University Hospitals Foundation Trust (OUHFT), coordinating the use of Patients Own Medicines, inpatient medicines and newly dispensed medicines in order to minimise waste and contribute to timely and safe discharge.
2. To contribute to the writing and implementation of comprehensive and consistent pharmacy wide standard Medicines Management policies and procedures, in accordance with the Medicines Policy and in line with national guidelines.
3. To ensure that all ward based technical staff are familiar with and adhere to pharmacy and trust SOPs and policies.
4. To participate in the training and development of ward based technicians, and support them in providing a ward based service.
5. To ensure ward based risks are identified and risk assessed, and ensure appropriate action plans are implemented to avoid or minimise
6. To support the Advanced Cancer Clinical Pharmacy Technician and Operational Manager with Human Resource processes for the ward based technicians including induction, performance and conduct and absence.
7. To be involved in recruitment, induction, training and appraisal of ward based technical staff.
8. To assist in developing and coordinating training programs, incorporating all ward based and patient-facing technical duties, in line with the Clinical Pharmacy SOP and other relevant procedures.
9. To assist in approving records of annual leave and study leave for ward based technicians, in liaison with the site operational managers.
10. To represent the ward based technical service at departmental and Trust meetings, and deputise for the Advanced Cancer Clinical Pharmacy Technician and Operational Manager as appropriate,.
11. To support the Accountable Officer in the management of controlled drugs in all wards and departments including monitoring usage, record keeping, administration, investigation, recording of incidents and regular pharmacy checks through the ward based teams.
12. To assist the WBT Manager and Advanced Cancer Clinical Pharmacy Technician and Operational Manager in the investigation of incident reports and changes to working practice as a result of such investigations.

General role
1. To be a role model for ward based technical staff and ensure that the team is motivated to provide a ward based service.
2. To be familiar with all aspects of the dispensary computer and automated systems.
3. To maintain expertise, necessary knowledge and skills of the technical aspects of pharmacy and ensure it is recognised as an important part of the pharmacy strategy.
4. To be an accredited checker for dispensed and general products.
5. To be accredited as an assessor for trainee ward based technicians, pharmacy technicians, assistants and apprentices as needed.
6. To be aware of training and competency assessment of pre-registration pharmacist trainees, diploma pharmacists and pre-registration pharmacy technicians, and participate in their training and competency assessment as required.
7. To work as part of the dispensary team to facilitate the efficient and effective discharge of patients from their clinical area out of the hospital environment by participation in the dispensary rotas, including a minimum of 25% of your time providing daily dispensary support.
8. To be accredited to receive intrathecal chemotherapy (according to site).
9. To be an authorized signatory for time sheets and back-up for purchase orders (where applicable).
10. To document and audit financial drug savings and returns, and to produce reports.
11. To participate in early, evening, weekend and bank holiday working according to rota.
12. To act as team leader for a weekend shift and ensure tasks are delegated and completed.
13. Any other reasonable duties as requested.

Ward and Day Treatment based role
1. To be an accredited technician in Medicines Management.
2. To be an accredited accuracy technician checker.
3. To be part of the Pharmacy team providing a near-patient medicines management service to clinical areas (wards and day treatment units).
4. To assess PODs according to the Trust’s criteria, and to implement and maintain the POD scheme according to Trust policies.
5. To train nursing, medical and pharmacy staff regarding the POD scheme.
6. To initiate the supply of non-stock items for one-stop/full pack dispensing.
7. To complete medicines reconciliation using a variety of available sources.
8. To aid discharge planning in conjunction with the clinical pharmacist and ward staff.
9. To undertake patient counselling on selected patients e.g. warfarin initiation, inhaler counselling.
10. To work with the clinical pharmacist to counsel patients on their discharge medication.
11. To become accredited to complete controlled drug checks for selected wards within the Directorate.
12. Refer interventions to the Clinical Pharmacist, and to report and investigate incidents where appropriate.
13. Work with the ward team to ensure safe storage of medicines at ward level, including temperature checks and appropriate storage of controlled drugs.
14. To liaise with ward staff over any relevant medicines management issues.
15. To participate in the audit of the medicines management service, as well as departmental and Trust-wide medication audits, as requested by the Clinical Pharmacist Manager or Ward Based Technician Manager.
16. To participate in a reciprocal cover arrangement to maintain the medicines management service.

Oncology & Haematology Directorate Role
17. To line manage Cancer Pharmacy Team Technician staff
18. To provide MMT services to Oncology and Haematology Directorate Clinical Areas, including Day Treatment Units.
19. To ensure effective cancer pharmacy satellite management.
1. To liaise with external agencies to ensure safe, timely, and appropriate supply to patients eg Homecare companies where appropriate.
2. To be responsible for ensuring that expiry date and stock level checks are carried out in Cancer Satellite Dispensary and DTU pharmacy trolleys.
3. To supervise the preparation of all rotas for cancer technical and support staff.

Patient Care
• Assist all patients with their personal care needs, empowering patients or families/carers and actively encouraging participation. This may involve maintaining hygiene needs for individuals such as helping patients to wash and dress themselves and assisting with toileting needs, maintaining privacy and dignity at all times.
• Perform clinical observations (following appropriate assessment of proficiency and under the direction of a registered practitioner where agreed.) and accurately record using agreed electronic national early warning signals such as SEND and report and escalate any concerns appropriately by reporting to the registered practitioner immediately.
• Prepare patients, families/carers and the environment for clinical activities supporting patients and their families/carers and preparing specific equipment as necessary.
• Participate in the initial assessment of patients’ needs, under the direct supervision of a registered practitioner.
• Observe and report the patient’s condition to a registered practitioner as required.
• Monitor closely patients having undergone a clinical activity ensuring their safety and wellbeing and reporting to a registered practitioner as required.
• Assess and monitor the patient’s skin integrity and report and document immediately any changes or concerns in their condition.
• Assist patients to meet their food and fluid intake giving attention to special diets, supplements and cultural requirements. In order to avoid malnutrition, ensure an age appropriate nutritional assessment is undertaken (e.g. MUST). All food, nutritional supplements and fluid intake to be recorded accurately as required.
• Actively encourage all patients, families/carers to share the responsibility for the maintenance of their health and to promote healthy living where appropriate and identified as part of the care plan.
• Assist patients to mobilise safely, taking account of development/physical needs using equipment and techniques as prescribed and recorded in the plan of care contributing to the falls and moving and handling risk assessment. Undertake patient transfer and escort duties between departments as appropriate and as per policy.
• Recognise when a patient’s condition changes and seek advice and expertise from registered practitioners in accordance with Trust policy.
• Assist in the care of a patient requiring end of life care in accordance within their spiritual and cultural needs.
• Assist as appropriate in the support of families/carers of patients receiving end of life care.
• Assist with the collection of specimens as requested such as mid-stream urine, stool, sputum, urine analysis and hospital acquired infections ensuring accurate labelling and transportation as per trust policy and in accordance with the training provided.

Communication
• Contribute during handover process to ensure continuity of care and to accurately feedback to a registered practitioner the care given to patients during the shift and of any changes in the patient’s condition.
• Communicate effectively with members of the multidisciplinary team, patients and carers, using all methods of communication. Where there are barriers to understanding, arrange access to information, support and other services to aid effective communication.
• Greet all patients and visitors to the department with courtesy and respect, being mindful of age specific body language and tone of voice, demonstrate sensitivity and empathy.
• Help patients, families/carers and visitors orientate themselves to their surroundings when admitted to the ward/department providing written and verbal information as required.
• Answer telephone calls (and bleeps) appropriately and efficiently, accurately relaying messages to both colleagues and patients using SBARR as appropriate.
• Use paper and electronic systems to retrieve and record patient information in line with Trust documentation standards and operational systems. Ensure information is accurate and securely maintained.
• Apply the principles of information governance and patient confidentiality to all aspects of your role.
• Obtain age/capacity appropriate consent from the patient/family or carer/guardian before any clinical intervention is undertaken; where this is not given, report this to a registered practitioner.
• Participate in discussions about ward and departmental issues at ward/departmental meetings.
• In instances when a patient/family, carer or visitor feels the need to raise concerns or complain seek support from a registered practitioner.

Applications are invited from well-motivated State Registered Biomedical scientists for the above post in a Biochemistry Laboratory that is part of a busy UKAS accredited department. The successful applicant will join the senior biochemistry BMS team of the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and will be expected to work in each of the sections, as required, by service requirements.

Applicants should hold an MSc in a Clinical Chemistry related subject or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills. Key responsibilities will be team management including appraisals, equipment management and method performance monitoring/control.The post position is currently in Biochemistry at the Horton Hospital in Banburyand the successful candidate will provide oversite of this section. They will play an important role in training new staff and developing existing staff to meet current and future service needs.

Key attributes of the successful applicant will be the ability to lead and motivate coupled with a strong grounding in the discipline as evidenced from appropriate CPD activities.

To supervise/organise staff/work within a section, ensuring work is completed within acceptable timescales and co-ordinate the training of all levels of staff within the section.

Clinical Biochemistry is part of Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. We provide services to primary, secondary and tertiary services throughout Oxfordshire, and also neo- and antenatal screening services to a wider geographical area.

There are three laboratories within the Department of Clinical Biochemistry, at the John Radcliffe, Churchill and Horton General hospitals. Processes on all three sites have been harmonised through use of common equipment, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and information management.

Principal responsibilities:

Organise/supervise the work/conduct of all staff within the section and assess staff competence within the section in collaboration with other senior staff.

Ensure appropriate testing procedures are followed and use experience and knowledge to request any further tests that may be required to aid in diagnosis by clinicians.

Co-ordinate staff rotation and absence management, including use of e-rostering to manage holidays, shift, and absences including sick leave, in collaboration with other senior staff.

Liaise with departmental clinicians, consultants, BMS staff of all grades, nurses, NEQAS, manufacturers, suppliers and support staff.

Ensure Health and Safety and COSHH guidelines are followed and that work is carried out safely and promote good laboratory practice.

Horton specific

The senior at the Horton is responsible for managing the day-to-day workload of the department.

Responsible for the day-to-day support of IT Hardware in pathology with support from Pathology IT at the John Radcliffe.

Maintain/manage Horton site point of care testing computer and liaise with POCT equipment users. Liaise with other Pathology disciplines to facilitate and support POCT implementation at the Horton.

Training officer/Co-ordinator for Horton laboratories, work place tutor for BSc student/trainees and Apprenticeship tutor for LSW's

Carry out advanced maintenance procedures/ troubleshooting on department analysers, arrange service visits to cause minimal disruption to workflow and maintain stocks of spares and consumables.

Analyses potentially infectious samples using a range of highly specialised laboratory procedures, by either manual or automated techniques, to produce results of a quality consistent with excellent patient care. Undertakes these duties in all areas of Clinical Biochemistry.

Ensures efficient use and maintenance of resources, is aware of stock levels and rotation, storage conditions, batch numbers and expiry dates, thus ensuring the viability of the reagents used.

Exercises own initiative and works in co-operation with other staff members to ensure that the workload is processed in a timely and efficient manner.

Is fully conversant with departmental policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), ensuring that personal performance complies with ISO 15189 and other professional standards.

Carries out troubleshooting and preventative maintenance on highly complex automated systems. Ensures appropriate records are kept and liaises with service engineers where appropriate.

Matches samples with request forms and inputs patient and test information into the laboratory computer system, requiring complete accuracy.

My name is Jane Yarnell, my role as the Lead Practitioner Development Technician for the OUHFT Pharmacy Department means that I am privileged to lead the training for our fantastic team of Pharmacy Level 2 apprentices, enabling them to gain the skills necessary to become a Pharmacy Assistant within one of our departments across the trust. Pharmacy Assistants are essential members of the pharmacy team working under the supervision of a Pharmacist and alongside Pharmacy Technicians to provide pharmaceutical care for the patient. The duties are varied, and it is not simply a matter of counting tablets. I am currently looking for a level 2 Pharmacy apprentice to join the Horton General Hospital Pharmacy department.



During your 15-month contract full practical in-house training will be provided, you will undertake a level 2 Specialist Btec in The Principles and Practices for Pharmacy Support Staff, this will provide you with the skills to work as a Pharmacy Assistant, alongside the knowledge you will need to support your pharmacy career. You must be a team player, keen to further your education, and have a good attention to detail as well as the ability to work accurately in a busy environment and be able to communicate clearly with patients and staff.

It is desirable that you have 4 GCSEs of 3 or above, but we can help with functional skills.
