About the Role

You’ll be supporting the COO in the strategic and operational development of the hospitality and retail arm of the trading company
and overseeing the management of the offer at the Glasshouse. You’ll develop & lead the team and inspire them to deliver a
top-class experience to all of their customers.

You will strive to enhance the audience experience making sure we align with the Glasshouse brand through the quality of the
catering and retail offer and the quality of the service. You will develop this offer to be rooted in brand and identity

We also deliver an important commercial return from the onsite catering services you will be required to deliver and develop a
suite of offers that capture and attract as many audience members as possible and a focus on cost control and increased sales.

Reporting to Chief Operating Officer with Operational lines into The Glasshouse ICM Senior Management Team.



You’ll be responsible for:

* Supporting the COO in the strategic development of the catering arm of the trading company and to lead and report on all
operational, customer service, Catering development, staff training & development and financial areas of Sage Gateshead
Hospitality and Catering.
* Supporting the COO on business planning for all new commercial initiatives on and off site.
* Operational and financial aspects of Catering, Retail and Hospitality Services, ensuring that the quality of service and
products is always of a high standard.
* Ensuring exceptional service levels, and appropriate offer for a variety of different events and clients including exciting
gigs and major conferences
* Managing a team of contracted & casual staff
* Manage the catering operational Managers, Head Chef and Retail Staff to ensure that strategic targets are delivered against
budget and that the quality of service and products is always of a high standard.
* Implementation & delivery of controls, ensure that budgets & targets are achieved The Glasshouse catering and retail services.
* Driving and increasing sales and closely manage expenditure.
* Identifying and developing training needs within catering Hospitality and retail departments, with support from the People Team
* Oversee the ordering of all food / beverages, retail & consumable stocks.
* Identifying and proactively developing new Food & Beverage related business opportunities in consultation with COO
* Identifying and proactively developing retail related business opportunities in consultation with COO, ensuing alignment with
brand and identity.
* Achieving budget and forecast spend-per-head for The Glasshouse on an event-by-event basis.
* Overseeing the recruitment, induction & training of all of our people hired to provide services within Food & Beverage,
Hospitality and Catering.
* Ensuring all areas of responsibility are regularly cleaned, kept in good order and meet the requirements of the Health & Safety
and Food Safety Act, achieving excellence in Hygiene Standards and compliance with Health & Safety Regulations and Fire Policy.
* Ensuring all Temperature Checks / HACCP documentation is carried out and recorded per Arena Event.
* Representing The Glasshouse in a senior capacity at Food & Beverage, Hospitality and Catering Industry Events, Seminars and
Conference.
* Undertaking other duties, training and / or hours of work as may be reasonably required and consistent with the general level
and responsibility of this job




About you

About the Orchestra

Based at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music, Royal Northern Sinfonia is the orchestra of the North East of England and
Cumbria.




To appropriately serve audiences across this large and diverse region, which incorporates urban centres as well as sparsely
populated rural areas, the orchestra has developed a unique flexibility in scale. While the musicians play together regularly,
performing formations can range in size from chamber music groups to full symphonic ensemble.




As a full-time orchestra, the musicians of RNS are deeply rooted in their local communities in the North, and care passionately
about making all music they perform accessible to the widest possible audiences. Increasingly this is evolving into more
participatory and co-created projects, and digital work. They also regularly take part in creative learning and schools projects,
and have a special relationship with both The Glasshouse ICM Centre for Advanced Training, and the two ‘In Harmony’ Schools in
Tyneside.




At the heart of the orchestra’s work sits the music of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, but RNS are keen explorers of many
other musical worlds, across periods of music history and genres. A recent addition to the orchestra is its inclusive ensemble RNS
Moves, comprised of disabled and non-disabled musicians, performing on standard orchestral and digital instruments. What defines
all RNS performances, whatever the notes, is a spirit of joy and infectious enthusiasm coupled with a deep desire to communicate.




RNS has been a key part of the cultural landscape of the North East for over 60 years, with past musical leadership including such
luminaries as Ivan Fischer, Richard Hickox, Heinrich Schiff, Lars Vogt and Conductor Laureate Thomas Zehetmair. The orchestra has
developed a distinctive tradition of working with play-directors, and in previous years has toured extensively internationally,
flying the flag for Tyneside and the North East.



Purpose of the Roles and Person Specification

We are looking to appoint a dynamic and enthusiastic musician of the highest international calibre to the position of Section
Leader Double Bass.




As one of five string Section Leader positions in the orchestra, the Section Leader Double Bass is one of the key roles in Royal
Northern Sinfonia. The successful candidate will be able to form a cohesive team with string colleagues in orchestral programmes
across repertoire ranging from the Baroque period to the music of today, while also displaying soloistic virtuosity and charisma
in orchestral solos and solo concertos.




They will be a keen chamber music player and excited about the prospect of performing in many different formations under the
banner of RNS, taking the lead where necessary. They will be determined to play their part in audience development, brimming with
project ideas, and be a passionate communicator about classical music to different audiences in different settings. They will be
as comfortable and at home in learning and participation environments as they are on the concert stage, and value both equally.
They will want to play a full part in orchestral and musical life in Tyneside and see themselves as advocates for the orchestra
and The Glasshouse.



Responsibilities and Duties
The role will include, but is not limited to:

* Rehearsals and performances in a range of venues and formats
* Media work, digital projects and commercial recordings
* Chamber music and ensemble performances in a range of formations
* Solo repertoire / formal recitals
* Directing performances of works where appropriate
* Working as part of a team to create new performance formats
* Section Leader meetings and other orchestral committee work
* Attending receptions and speaking to audience members, individually and from the stage



Creative Learning is a vital part of The Glasshouse and of the Orchestra’s work. Duties within this area can include, but are not
limited to:

* Informal chamber music performances and recitals in community or learning settings
* Demonstration of instrument to a range of audiences
* Introducing performances
* Participating in planning and evaluation meetings
* Coaching of individuals and ensembles, both adults and young people
* Masterclasses
* Engagement with The Glasshouse Centre for Advanced Training, which includes two ‘In Harmony’ Schools and Young Sinfonia



Selection Process, Submission Guidance and How to Apply
The recruitment process consists of four stages with the successful candidate being offered the position with the Orchestra. Once
all four stages are complete, an offer of employment will be made and will include a probation period of six months. This
probation period will include regular feedback meetings with the Leader of the Orchestra (or appropriate Section Leaders) and the
Senior Orchestra and Personnel Manager.

The final stage in the recruitment process will involve the successful candidates undertaking paid work with the orchestra in line
with the NMT/MU Freelance Agreement. This will consist of four patches of paid work, at least one of which will be centred around
our core classical repertoire conducted by Principal Conductor Dinis Sousa. Stage four will also include a chamber music rehearsal
with members of the panel and an interview with the Leader (or appropriate Section Leaders) and the Senior Orchestra and Personnel
Manager.




An additional patch of work may be offered to all candidates if the panel fail to reach a consensus about one or more candidates.




Candidates will be requested to provide their availability for Stage 4 by Monday 25 November 2024



How to Upload your Digital Submission

Here is a short guide for uploading your Stage 1 Digital Submission video to YouTube. This will be a private submission and will
be heard by the panel only.




Smartphone/Tablet

Step 1: Open the YouTube app (Downloaded from your app store of choice if you don’t already have it) and sign in to your account.
Press the ‘video’ button in the top right corner of your screen.

Step 2: This will bring you to a menu to select your video, select your chosen video, taking you to a ‘trim’ screen. Press ‘next’
(Top right).

Step 3: Name your video. The video name should be the following format: Initials – position applied for.

Step 4: At this point you should select the option ‘Unlisted’ for your privacy settings. This will allow you to share the URL link
so the Audition Panel can view your video, it still shows that this video is not public and can’t be seen by anyone that doesn’t
have the link. Press ‘upload’ (Top Right). Once this has finished processing it will appear in the menu.



Computer/Laptop

Step 1: Go to www.youtube.com. Make sure you are signed in to your YouTube account. In the top right corner you will see ‘Create.’
Press ‘upload video’.

Step 2: This brings you to an upload screen, press ‘Select files.’ This will bring up your file menu; navigate to the file and
select ‘choose’ or ‘done’.

Step 3: After you have selected the video and uploaded it, it will bring you to the Video details screen, where you can name and
describe the video. Please create the video name using the following format: Your initials – Position Applied for.

Step 4: Press ‘Next’ until you are on the ‘Visibility’ screen. At this point you should select the option ‘Unlisted’ from the
list. This will allow you to share the URL link so the Audition Panel can view your video submission, it still shows that this

Technical Guidelines

Your digital submission should be no longer than five minutes in length. The final submission should be recorded ‘as live’, in one
take and be unedited. Please use your smart phone camera with the internal microphone and no additional audio or visual
enhancement equipment. Please do not include any talking in your submission.




Your video should be landscape and you and your instrument should be face on and central to the camera. The panel will only hear
the audio of your submission.

The Production Manager is responsible for advancing conferences and live performances, providing technical advice and solutions to
all clients and touring productions. You will work independently and in conjunction with colleagues, to plan and oversee the safe
delivery of technical support to events

Production Management & Technical Expertise: Provide advanced technical guidance and solutions for events & performances



* Work closely with internal and external teams to meet event requirements, providing expert technical and logistical advice
* Advance shows and events, working simultaneously on multiple projects, adopting a methodical and organised approach to your

* Use venue CAD software to produce to scale stage plans and hall / room layouts
* Production of technical quotations for clients, if required (some of whom may be unfamiliar with the technical event production

listening tools. And you can make those reports relevant and interesting to your non-digital colleagues.

* Day to day management of The Glasshouse and Royal Northern Sinfonia social media channels (Facebook, Twitter/X, Instagram,
LinkedIn, TikTok and YouTube); devising cross-channel content plans and schedules; audience engagement and community building.

* Writing a social media strategy to map out how we’ll use social media to connect with our audiences, support marketing
objectives, and grow our online presence and following; aligning our social media approach with our content strategy and
organisational strategy.

* Developing a social content plan for our home orchestra, Royal Northern Sinfonia, working closely with the players and our
Classical team to produce an engaging online complement to the orchestra’s live and touring programme, with an eye on
developing new audiences.

* Working with others to design and deliver social media campaigns to support marketing and/or brand campaigns; offering
evaluation and recommendations to colleagues on how to get the best results.

help support our audience development strategy.



* Supporting our brand awareness goals using our social media channels as a ‘first point of call’ for audiences engaging with The

* Work with artists, creatives and networks to produce new types of social content, building connections with networks and
communities.



* Working collaboratively with colleagues from Marketing, Communications, Contemporary, Classical and Make Music programming

About the role of Assistant Orchestra Manager at The Glasshouse

Reporting to the Orchestra Manager, the Assistant Orchestra Manager is a member of the orchestral management team and part of the
wider Classical Team at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music.




You will support the Orchestra Manager and the Stage and Transport Co-ordinator with the administration, logistics and stage
management requirements for all Royal Northern Sinfonia (RNS) activity both at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music and
at external venues.




The post is based at The Glasshouse ICM but you will be required to work at external venues both within the UK and abroad.




Your duties will be based around the orchestra’s schedule with variable working hours including evenings and weekends. The
orchestra schedule is normally confirmed a minimum of 4 weeks in advance.




Whilst a knowledge of Classical music is desirable, we are looking for someone with a can-do attitude and a willingness to learn
on the job. You must hold a clean UK Driver’s Licence.

Your responsibilities:

* In conjunction with the Orchestra Manager, to engage freelance string players and deputies working with RNS.
* Assist the Orchestra Manager with orchestral personnel administration and orchestra recruitment.
* In conjunction with the Stage and Transport Co-ordinator, ensure stages at rehearsal and performance venues are correctly laid
out to meet the requirements of the orchestra and conductors and that all arrangements are in place before the arrival of the
orchestra and guest artists.
* Maintain excellent relationships with the musicians and guest artists and work proactively to respond to any requests or
issues.
* Check dressing room allocations, put up signage and ensure rooms are clean and tidy prior to the arrival of the orchestra and
guest artists.
* Ensure refreshments for musicians and guest artists are in place as required.
* Assist the Stage and Transport Co-ordinator with the transportation of all instruments and equipment to venues regionally,
nationally, and abroad including driving the orchestra van.
* Provide support for the orchestra Librarian with copying and distributing orchestral music to players and other library duties
as and when required.
* Provide logistical support to the RNS Chorus Manager as and when required.
* Assist the wider Classical Team with administration and concert management tasks, as and when required.



Health & Safety

* Work with the Orchestra Manager and Stage and Transport Co-ordinator to ensure that all Health and Safety, Safeguarding and
Wellbeing legislation and guidelines are followed (including Noise at Work Regulations), and stay up-to-date on evolving
practice and legislation in these areas.



General

* Deputise for the Orchestra Manager if required.
* Undertake some of the work of the Stage and Transport Co-ordinator, if required, to cover absence and annual leave.
* Act as an ambassador for The Glasshouse ICM and Royal Northern Sinfonia, maintaining excellent relations with external
promoters, venues and other departments within The Glasshouse ICM.

About the Orchestra

Based at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music, Royal Northern Sinfonia is the orchestra of the North East of England and
Cumbria.




To appropriately serve audiences across this large and diverse region, which incorporates urban centres as well as sparsely
populated rural areas, the orchestra has developed a unique flexibility in scale. While the musicians play together regularly,
performing formations can range in size from chamber music groups to full symphonic ensemble.




As a full-time orchestra, the musicians of RNS are deeply rooted in their local communities in the North, and care passionately
about making all music they perform accessible to the widest possible audiences. This increasingly is evolving into more
participatory and co-created projects, and digital work. They also regularly take part in creative learning and schools projects,
and have a special relationship with both The Glasshouse ICM Centre for Advanced Training, and the two ‘In Harmony’ Schools in
Tyneside




At the heart of the orchestra’s work sits the music of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, but RNS are keen explorers of many
other musical worlds, across periods of music history and genres. A recent addition to the orchestra, is its inclusive ensemble
RNS Moves, comprised of disabled and non-disabled musicians, which even uses some digital instruments. What defines all RNS
performances, whatever the notes, is a spirit of joy and infectious enthusiasm coupled with a deep desire to communicate.




RNS has been a key part of the cultural landscape of the North East for over 60 years, with past musical leadership including such
luminaries as Ivan Fischer, Richard Hickox, Heinrich Schiff, Lars Vogt and Conductor Laureate Thomas Zehetmair. The orchestra has
developed a distinctive tradition of working with play-directors, and in previous years has toured extensively internationally,
flying the flag for Tyneside and the North East.



Purpose of the Roles and Person Specification

We are looking to appoint a dynamic and enthusiastic musician of the highest international calibre to the position of Section
Leader Double Bass.




As one of five string Section Leader positions in the orchestra, the Section Leader Double Bass is one of the key roles in Royal
Northern Sinfonia. The successful candidate will be able to form a cohesive team with string colleagues in orchestral programmes
across repertoire ranging from the Baroque period to the music of today, while also displaying soloistic virtuosity and charisma
in orchestral solos and solo concertos.




They will be a keen chamber music player and excited about the prospect of performing in many different formations under the
banner of RNS, taking the lead where necessary. They will be determined to play their part in audience development, brimming with
project ideas, and be a passionate communicator about classical music to different audiences in different settings. They will be
as comfortable and at home in learning and participation environments as they are on the concert stage, and value both equally.
They will want to play a full part in orchestral and musical life in Tyneside and see themselves as advocates for the orchestra
and The Glasshouse ICM.



Responsibilities and Duties
The role will include, but is not limited to:

* Rehearsals and performances in a range of venues and formats
* Media work, digital projects and commercial recordings
* Chamber music and ensemble performances in a range of formations
* Solo repertoire / formal recitals
* Directing performances of works where appropriate
* Working as part of a team to create new performance formats

Creative Learning is a vital part of The Glasshouse ICM and of the orchestra’s work. Duties within this area can include, but are

* Informal chamber music performances and recitals in community or learning settings
* Demonstration of instrument to a range of audiences
* Introducing performances
* Participating in planning and evaluation meetings
* Coaching of individuals and ensembles, both adults and young people
* Masterclasses
* Engagement with The Glasshouse ICM Centre for Advanced Training, which includes two ‘In Harmony’ Schools and Young Sinfonia



Selection Process, Submission Guidance and How to Apply
The recruitment process consists of four stages with the successful candidate being offered the position with the Orchestra. Once
all four stages are complete, an offer of employment will be made and will include a probation period of six months. This
probation period will include regular feedback meetings with the Leader of the Orchestra (or appropriate Section Leaders) and the

Stage 4 – Trial (Paid work, Chamber Music, and Interview) - Dates from September 2024 onwards

The final stage in the recruitment process will involve the successful candidates undertaking paid work with the orchestra in line
with the NMT/MU Freelance Agreement. This will consist of four patches of paid work, at least one of which will be centred around
our core classical repertoire conducted by Principal Conductor Dinis Sousa. Stage four will also include a chamber music rehearsal
with members of the panel and an interview with the Leader (or appropriate Section Leaders) and the Orchestra Manager.

An additional patch of work may be offered to all candidates if the panel fail to reach a consensus about one or more candidates.




Candidates will be requested to provide their availability for Stage 4 by Monday 29 July 2024



How to Upload your Digital Submission

Here is a short guide for uploading your Stage 1 Digital Submission video to YouTube. This will be a private submission and will
be heard by the panel only.



Smartphone/Tablet

Step 1: Open the YouTube app (Downloaded from your app store of choice if you don’t already have it) and sign in to your account.
Press the ‘video’ button in the top right corner of your screen.

Step 2: This will bring you to a menu to select your video, select your chosen video, taking you to a ‘trim’ screen. Press ‘next’
(Top right).

Step 3: Name your video. The video name should be the following format: Initials – position applied for.

Step 4: At this point you should select the option ‘Unlisted’ for your privacy settings. This will allow you to share the URL link
so the Audition Panel can view your video, it still shows that this video is not public and can’t be seen by anyone that doesn’t
have the link. Press ‘upload’ (Top Right). Once this has finished processing it will appear in the menu.



Computer/Laptop

Step 1: Go to www.youtube.com. Make sure you are signed in to your YouTube account. In the top right corner you will see ‘Create.’
Press ‘upload video’.

Step 2: This brings you to an upload screen, press ‘Select files.’ This will bring up your file menu; navigate to the file and
select ‘choose’ or ‘done’.

Step 3: After you have selected the video and uploaded it, it will bring you to the Video details screen, where you can name and
describe the video. Please create the video name using the following format: Your initials – Position Applied for.

Step 4: Press ‘Next’ until you are on the ‘Visibility’ screen. At this point you should select the option ‘Unlisted’ from the
list. This will allow you to share the URL link so the Audition Panel can view your video submission, it still shows that this
video is not public and can’t be seen by anyone that doesn’t have the link.



Technical Guidelines

Your digital submission should be no longer than five minutes in length. The final submission should be recorded ‘as live’, in one
take and be unedited. Please use your smart phone camera with the internal microphone and no additional audio or visual
enhancement equipment. Please do not include any talking in your submission. Your video should be landscape and you and your
instrument should be face on and central to the camera. The panel will only hear the audio of your submission. Please label your
submission as outlined in the ‘How to Upload your Digital Submission’ section above.



Working in the UK and Eligibility Criteria

It is a criminal offence to seek employment and certain voluntary work if not legally eligible to work in the UK. Under the Asylum
and Immigration Act it is a criminal offence to employ a person unless they are British citizens, Commonwealth citizens with right
of abode in the UK, citizens of any country in the European economic area, or a person with current and valid permission to be in
the UK or who qualifies for a category specified by the Home Secretary where employment is allowed.



Successful applicants will be asked to present the relevant documents to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK. More
