What you will be doing

In this role, you’ll work closely with the Commissioning Fire Safety Coordinator and HPC Site Fire Safety Engineers, becoming a key player in ensuring fire safety across the project. You'll provide vital support to the Commissioning Fire Safety Coordinator in managing and monitoring fire safety on a day-to-day basis, seamlessly integrating the Commissioning Programme with the broader HPC fire safety arrangements. Your efforts will be crucial to maintaining high standards of fire safety throughout the site. Additional responsibilities for this role will include:


- Assist the Commissioning Fire Safety Coordinator in managing fire safety arrangements, including writing and owning Commissioning Fire Risk Assessments (FRA).
- Support the facilitation and administration of Fire Safety and Emergency Preparedness Management Systems, along with Fire Safety Audits and Assurance.
- Play a key role in executing the Commissioning fire safety strategy for specific Commissioning areas.
- Ensure HPC project fire health and safety standards are consistently upheld while promoting the HPC Way and its core values in every task.
- Help communicate lessons learned, lead toolbox talks, and share fire safety moments across CommOps teams.
- Support regular site fire safety inspections and checks alongside the Commissioning Fire Safety Coordinator.
- Assist the Commissioning Fire Safety Coordinator with Fire Safety Assurance Audits, inspections, and monitoring activities to ensure compliance with site standards and UK legislation for all contractors.
- Be a proactive and practical team member within the CommOps health, safety, and environmental team.


Who you are

To be successful in this role, we’re looking for you to be actively working towards membership with the Institute of Fire Safety Engineers (IFE) or a similar professional organisation. Ideally, you’ll have at least one year of fire safety experience and qualifications from a recognised body such as the UK Fire Service College, FPA, IFE, or NEBOSH. A solid understanding of fire safety principles and practices is essential, along with competency in Microsoft applications and a willingness to learn new software tools. Additional requirements for this role include:


- Excellent communication skills with the ability to build strong networks and working relationships within EDF and the construction industry.
- Eager to learn and continuously improve in the field of fire safety.
- Experience in fire safety, including writing Fire Risk Assessments within a project environment.

What you will be doing

As a key contributor within the project team, you will be responsible for addressing various technical and engineering challenges that arise from the MEH Contractor on-site, ensuring that all responses and actions align with nuclear safety, environmental regulations, and project objectives. The role involves close collaboration with designers, site experts, and external organisations to resolve issues efficiently while managing technical risks and maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders.


- Respond to general queries, non-conformances, change requests, and exemption requests from the MEH Contractor with support from the Responsible Designer or site experts as needed.

Who you are

While a degree or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline would be beneficial, though not essential, we’re looking for you to possess significant experience in electrical design, installation, and commissioning, along with the ability to apply multi-disciplinary technical knowledge within the nuclear industry. You will be familiar with industry standards, health and safety legislation, and have a strong capability to work independently while influencing key stakeholders. Job Purpose/Overview:

This role is required to support oversight, advice and delivery arrangements for work with ionising radiation at construction site. The role will involve task observation, writing and reviewing radiation risk assessments, local rules and contingency plans; setting, and maintaining oversight of the radiological safety standards on the construction site and providing expert advice on how work with ionising radiation should be executed safely and compliantly. To cover the scope of work, the role holder will work closely within a team that includes a Radiography Co-ordinator and several Radiation Protection Technicians that facilitate the delivery of radiography work & radioactive source management.

The Radiological Protection Engineer, will take an overview of radiological performance in delivering the Construction plan for work with ionising radiation across nuclear site and have a broad understanding of all the relevant legislation and standards relevant to the work being undertaken, ensuring compliance and risk reduction to delivered safely and with the required quality. As well as monitoring current work, the role holder will develop future arrangements for work. Anticipating future risk and being proactive in managing them. They will also need to play an active role in the bigger Delivery team and represent the Principal Contractor with a strong delivery focus.

Contextual Information:

The Radiological Protection Engineer will undertake a range of monitoring, coordination, planning, communication, reporting, advice, guidance and support activities which focus on establishing, promoting, maintaining, and continually improving the CDM (Construction, Design and Management) Principal Contractor management arrangements to attain construction excellence .

The Radiological Protection Engineer will develop and maintain a 'one-team' working relationship with all key project stakeholders always providing clear communication to support surrounding departments and programme teams. They are responsible for working closely as a team with the Radiography support section supporting as required by the delivery plan.

As part of a small specialist team , the role will require regular out of hours attendance to take part in the site permit system and authorising, as well as observing work.

Principal Accountabilities:

This role will be the main contributor to the functional management of radiological safety performance, monitoring, reporting and cooperating with other functions and contractors. They will have a strong teamwork and delivery performance being able to plan and prioritise work adapting to a rapidly changing work landscape. They shall promote an open learning environment, leading to continuous improvement and delivery to safety, quality, time and cost constraints.

They will interface with a range of external regulators, senior takeholders including the Pre-ops organisation which will deliver the Operating power station organisation, systems and processes.

The role holder will either have currently or be able to obtain certificate of competence as an RPA and to be able to offer and help implement pragmatic arrangements within a framework of regulatory and business requirements.

Dimensions:

The Radiological Protection Engineer is responsible for ensuring the high performance of the radiological protection safety on site and delivering future arrangements as the Site moves from Construction towards Operations through Commissioning. Through detailed knowledge and building trusting relationships, the role holder will be able influence work to ensure it is carried out to national, international requirements.

They will work in the Environment, Health, Safety and Emergency Planning team and have wider links to subject matter experts, construction delivery and the contractors delivering radiography. They will champion learning and taking time to work ad-hoc shifts to ensure work is being carried out to the expectations required.

Out of hours work is required to ensure the Site Team supports construction delivery safely.

Knowledge and Skills:

Knowledge of work under IRR2017, HASS permits, Safeguards and handling of radioactive sources including unsealed material. Able to write and implement arrangements for the safe and compliant work with radioactive material including source management, dosimetry, risk assessment, local rules and contingency plans. Use human factors to minimise risks. Deliver training and briefing. Excellent planning, delivery and interpersonal skills. Accurate and methodical. Capable use of I.T. and a desire to work out on site with a variety of construction parties. Capability to carry out shielding calculations. Experience of working in Nuclear Site Licensee Management system arrangements and with Construction (Design and Management) Regulations.

Qualifications and Experience:

Essential:

Degree qualified (or equivalent) in a science-related discipline

* Experience of developing, implementing and providing assurance of arrangements to meet the requirements of the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 and other primary legislation

* Good understanding of the principles of radiological protection relating to industrial radiography

* Experience of working as a radiological protection engineer / health physicist in a dynamic nuclear work environment * A previous RPA certificate of competence holder

* Practical work & management experience with radioactive sources

* Experience of interacting with nuclear and environmental regulators *Nuclear Site Licensee Management Arrangements.

Desirable:

• The holder of a current and valid certificate of competency as a Radiation Protection Adviser (or equivalent) * Experience of working within a project organisation * Experience and knowledge of other safety regulations in the UK including Construction (Design and Management) Regulations. * Experience of WANO/INPO. Security requirements for sources.

Key Competencies:
