Remote working

An experienced civil litigation lawyer to assist our busy team with a varied caseload including property litigation, highways and general civil litigation (including debt recovery and judicial review proceedings). There will be an expectation of some supervision to junior members of the team.

Candidates with previous Local Government experience will be essential as this is a fast paced role and will require the successful candidate to take on an immediate and complex caseload.

Key responsibilities:

Oversee and manage a caseload in an area of law allocated.
Respond to requests for advice, representation etc, from the Council employees.
Manage all aspects of court representation as required.
Advise and/or present to courts, meetings, members at formal appeal hearings or as required by the County Solicitor
Assume a lead role in advising clients on specialist aspects of law and practice as required and to organise/participate in training events as appropriate and/or necessary.
Determine appeals under the Internal Dispute Resolution Procedure of the Local Government Pension Scheme and various internal appeal procedures if required.
Take part in the Legal Services’ Out of Hours service to provide assistance
Any other duties appropriate to the grade as may be assigned by one of the Legal Service managers.

Qualifications:

Educated to degree level;
Law Society admitted and Solicitor Regulatory Authority registered solicitor, Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives or Bar Standards Board registered barrister

Knowledge:

A thorough knowledge of that area of law, good advocacy skills and considerable experience in case management is essential along with demonstrable experience of working in a particular field

Experience:

Adequate experience of managing own workload

Skills & Abilities:

Excellent communication and presentational skills both verbal and written including influencing and persuasion;
Excellent ICT skills and a degree of administrative self-sufficiency although some secretarial support will be provided.
Ability to absorb and interpret legislation, case law and procedures;
Ability to assimilate facts and present these in a coherent fashion in order to facilitate desired results. It is important to note the impact of incorrect advice and poor advocacy could be financially very significant
Ability to assimilate detailed and complex information and make judgments on the way that certain procedures have been followed

You will be responsible for managing projects and multi-disciplinary design teams producing and assuring designs, controlling task budgets and the development of staff competencies and career paths (motivation and performance of other direct reports and junior staff is an integral part of the role). You will also support our Highways Practices in business development activities and seeking out new opportunities and take responsibility for developing commercial and technical responses to new opportunities. The successful candidate will have demonstrable highways experience preference for a Chartered Engineer with an appropriate civil engineering institution (ICE, CIHT, PWI etc) or show equivalent continuous professional development, be technically proficient in one or more areas of technical capability. Candidates should also be able to demonstrate some experience of leading or having a key project role in delivering multi-disciplinary transport projects, developing new work opportunities, winning work and mentoring team members.
