Your new role
You will be joining the team in one of three possible locations as a Senior Software Engineer. In this role your day-to-day responsibilities will include, designing and developing on-board and ground test software for payloads. You will be a proactive team player, who will solve root cause issues using strong analytical skills, estimating resources for completing software solutions, and effectively documenting and presenting information. You will have the flexibility and willingness to travel to other locations when necessary.

What you'll need to succeed
To succeed in this role, it is essential you can demonstrate the ability to derive software designs from requirements. You will have experience developing Python applications and modules, and developing C/C++ for Linux systems. Prior experience with formal development processes and tools like Git and Jenkins is also required. It's a bonus if you can demonstrate a track record of innovation, designing high availability and secure software systems. Furthermore, knowledge of wireless telecommunications, Python numerical libraries, radio frequency test equipment, Linux kernel, device drivers, and an understanding of electronics hardware. On a personal level, the ideal candidate will demonstrate a history of developing quality software, and have a proactive approach to volunteering for additional work. Your new role
In this role you will oversee the entire product development lifecycle for satellite communication products, including the specification, design, and validation of products. Your role:

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work on urban resilience in Greater Manchester, a city-region that is recognised by the United Nations as a global leader in resilience. As a Civil Contingencies Officer, the post holder will be a key member of the Greater Manchester Resilience Unit, supporting the emergency planning, response, and resilience service to the ten Councils in Greater Manchester. Operating as part of the Greater Manchester Resilience Unit, a shared service established by Greater Manchester’s Councils to deliver expertise in civil contingencies, the role holder will have responsibility to support specific resilience workstreams and projects, including ensuring projects are delivered on time and to the required standard. They will also be responsible for the design and delivery of training programmes for Councils and partners organisations across GM.

This work is delivered in a wider multi-agency environment with civil contingencies activity across Greater Manchester coordinated through the Greater Manchester Resilience Forum, a statutory partnership that brings together over 80 organisations involved in planning for, responding to and recovering from emergencies.

The post holder will join the team at a pivotal and challenging time as Greater Manchester’s Councils implement their resilience ambitions set out in the recent Trailblazer Devolution Deal agreed with Government, the Greater Manchester Resilience Strategy, and the UK Government’s Resilience Framework.

About you:

The post holder will have excellent communication and relationship management skills with the capacity to work with senior managers, operational staff and different stakeholders. They will have the drive, enthusiasm, and experience to support the shaping and delivery of services to meet the resilience needs of the GM Councils. You will be able to demonstrate the skills and experience in the following key areas:

• Experience acting as 3rd line support for incidents, problems and changes to infrastructure solutions and services
• Experience of performing the administration and support of all infrastructure solutions and services
• Experience of technical change impacting, and performing changes in a live service environment
• Monitoring of infrastructure services and alerts and taking appropriate action.
• Experience of configuration and maintenance of infrastructure as code.
• You will have AWS practitioner, administration, system operations certification or equivalent experience

What we can offer you

A fixed term role for 18 months with a salary of £50,360 - £54,817 per annum depending on skills and experience. (Salary is made up of a basic salary of £39,360 - £43,817 plus a market factor supplement of £11,000 with is paid monthly and reviewed annually)

Your Role

As a UTC Engineer, you will be involved in many exciting projects, including cycling and walking initiatives and public transport projects (such as the Greater Manchester Bee Network and Quality Bus Transit) as well as helping to deliver TfGMs vision as set out in our 2040 Strategy. You will also be involved in designing and implementing adaptive signal networks and will work alongside experienced Urban Traffic Control Engineers, allowing you to develop in your role.

Who are we?

Greater Manchester is embarking on an exciting period of transition and evolving with a growing population and economy. Transport for Greater Manchester manage the largest number of traffic signals outside London. The challenge of managing such a large conurbation offers the opportunity to gain a wide breadth of experience.

The Infrastructure Design Group (IDG) team are responsible for the design, installation, and maintenance of traffic signal installations across Greater Manchester. They work closely with a variety of organisations, including the local authorities, walking and cycling groups, bus operators, tram operators, and many more. In this team you would contribute to the geometric design of new and existing traffic signal-controlled junctions and take a role in developing design solutions at junctions that cater for all transport modes, including walking and cycling.

The Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). team manage the operation of the traffic signals across Greater Manchester. In addition to formulating plans for day-to-day operation they also develop and implement strategic plans for events such as premiership and international football matches at the Etihad and Old Trafford Stadiums, large concerts, and roadwork schemes. The ITS team also carry out junction modelling, working closely with the IDG team to develop innovative signal solutions. The team also provides advice to the districts of Greater Manchester regarding development proposals.

You will be keen to develop your knowledge of the principles of traffic and transportation and have experience of using computer systems for data related to modelling. You will have an enquiring mind with the ability to use numbers and data to analyse and provide solutions to complex problems and create reports with the flexibility to adapt to changing workload demands and new organisational challenges.

You will also have a degree, MSc, BTEC, HND or HNC in an engineering discipline, science, maths, geography or similar.

This is a career graded role, the salary for this role is £31,915 - £36,683 per annum for entry at Graduate Level 1 and £39,360 £43,817 per annum for more experienced candidates entering at Engineer Level 2, both depending on skills and experience.
