Essential requirements and attributes:

• A degree or equivalent qualification in an engineering or construction discipline

Role and Responsibilities

• Project Support: Assist in the planning, design, and execution of civil engineering projects related to power and hydro infrastructure.
• Site Investigations: Carry out civil engineering inspections of Hydro scheme structures including dams, smelter and power station buildings and structural steelwork.
• Documentation: Prepare technical reports, project specifications, and construction drawings in compliance with industry standards and regulations.
• Collaboration: Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including electrical, mechanical, and environmental engineers, to ensure integrated and efficient project delivery.
• Quality Assurance: Monitor construction activities to ensure compliance with design specifications, safety standards, and quality requirements.
• Problem Solving: Identify and resolve technical issues that arise during project execution, providing innovative and cost-effective solutions.

Based at our Maintenance Facility in Fort William, you'll join a small team of Mechanics to carry out mechanical repairs, servicing and maintenance across a varied fleet of Trucks and Trailers in a modern well equipped facility.

The role involves diagnostics, repair and maintenance on the company's fleet of upward of mainly 50 Volvo trucks, but also including Scania & MAN, and 160 trailers and small plant machinery, including tractor units, cranes, service vans, tug masters which are serviced and maintained at our workshop.

Services provided in the Maintenance Facility include:

• Pre-MOT inspections
• Tachograph calibrations
• Computer diagnostics
• Winter checks
• Cab/chassis/engine steam clean
• Commercial steam cleaning
• Breakdown assistance
• ABS and EBS systems
• Repair/ supply hydraulic pipes
• Training facilities

Duties will include:

• Inspecting & maintaining Ferguson Transport fleet of vehicles and trailers
• Travelling to sites to deal with breakdowns
• Maintaining workshop along with colleagues to standards that meet our image of an efficient and modern transport and service provider
• Use of Volvo/Scania special tools as required
• Completing necessary paperwork and records
• Carrying out repairs according to Company procedures in a safe and responsible manner
• Using specialist tools and equipment as and when required

Roles and Responsibilities

• Comply with all company policies and procedures.
• Lead the development and delivery of the weekly maintenance schedule in your area of control.
• Identify changing / new engineering standards / legislation which require site action / compliance.
• Lead and support engineering maintenance projects across the smelter complex.
  Ensure maintenance resources are utilised effectively, for planned and reactive maintenance activity.
• Provide support and training to diagnose and fault find equipment failures.
• Ensure all written isolation procedures are followed, involving multiple points of isolation to control hazardous energy.
• Identify the quickest and most cost-effective, long-term solution to remedial activity.
• Instil a reliability focused culture within direct reports, and maintenance function.
• Ensure all equipment is maintained to a high standard.
• Coordinate auditing systems to ensure engineering compliance on the site.
• Work towards isolation officer and senior authorised person level.
• Lead site reliability projects using recognised lean principles.
• Ensure the development and training of apprentices is in line with the outcome of a time-served resource.
• Coach the maintenance team to ensure competency and delivery standards.
• Manage external engineering contractors in line with health & safety, cost, time and quality expectations.
• Support the Engineering team on new equipment installation, providing long-term maintenance input.
• Ensure all tasks completed within the department are carried out to the required health safety and environmental standards.
• Work in a safe manner, avoid taking unnecessary risks and avoid improvisation which entails risk.
• Will not allow any person under their charge to carry out any tasks for which they have not been adequately trained.
• Ensure that all accidents and incidents are investigated thoroughly, with robust action put in place to prevent recurrence.
• Give clear instructions which incorporate safety aspects and ensure they are adhered to.
• Conduct as and when any other HSEQ related activities that is required by the business.

The is a work-based learning course which includes a thorough grounding in engineering principles, concepts and theories while appreciating the complexity and interaction of managerial, technical and environmental issues in the modern workplace.

The course provides students with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to support career development in engineering design, manufacturing engineering, engineering operations management and engineering project management. Students will learn how to apply their knowledge and skills to the solution of real-world problems, analysing and evaluating practical issues involved in the design, specification, manufacturing technologies, maintenance and commissioning of mechanical equipment and associated systems.

You will study at University of Strathclyde, Glasgow for completion of a BEng (Hons in Engineering: Design and Manufacture through a mixture of work-based learning, distance learning and day release at university, this will take up to 4 years to complete.
