Senior Software Engineer - Product Security 

This is a fully remote role - must be based in USA 

About the Team  

Digital Assessment Platform Security Engineering is a new team being formed within the Product Security division to address complex security challenges across our desktop and cloud-based software stack. We ensure that the Bluebook software running on MacOS, iPad, Windows, and ChromeOS, as well as the underlying services operating in AWS are secure and resilient through contributions of well-engineered production code.   Embracing a small, self-organized approach, our team of poly-skilled engineers collaborates through ensemble programming, fostering an environment of innovation. 

About the Opportunity   

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Digital Assessment Platform Security Engineering team, you’re a leader and collaborator who is comfortable contributing production code to multiple applications owned by various other teams. You have a strong interest in security within software engineering and comfortable applying sound software engineering principles in multiple programming languages and frameworks. You're eager to take on new work, and your contribution to all phases of software engineering within and across teams is valuable. Your efforts are aimed at making our digital assessment platform more secure than ever before. 

In this role, you will:   

Design & Implementation (75%)   

• Collaborate daily with engineering teams using mob programming to address and solve complex technical problems 

• Work across teams to integrate solutions into production code bases while adhering to established software engineering standards 

• Apply your deep understanding of the applications to design and implement innovative security solutions for desktop, mobile and cloud software.  

• Write complex code, building infrastructure as code, work with immutable "cloud" based environments, and build the supporting automated toolsets necessary to support the secure continuous delivery pipeline 

Team Operations and Success (25%)   

• Drive continuous improvement of the team’s engineering practices, efficiency, speed, and quality 

• Participate in conversations and offer opinions on proposed architecture, testing strategies, developer experience, security, performance, and resilience 

• Conduct peer reviews of software engineering artifacts 

About You    

You have:   

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience delivering commercial software

• Demonstrated full-stack software engineering experience using JavaScript and TypeScript

• Strong knowledge of AWS and building and delivering serverless applications at scale 

• Experience in DevOps and CICD automation and tooling in GitHub and AWS

• Experience developing client applications using the Electron framework. 

• Strong knowledge of cloud security and application security.

• A passion for learning and a growth mindset

• Experience establishing software engineering standards and performing code and design reviews

• You must be authorized to work in the US 

Differentiators: 

• Experience in developing client applications using the Electron framework is highly valued. Any contributions to the Electron open-source project will be considered a substantial advantage 

• If you have hands-on experience developing software using C++ on Windows, it adds a distinctive edge on your profile

The hiring range for a new employee in this position is $144,000 to $157,000. College Board differentiates salaries by location so where you live will narrow the portion of this range in which you can expect a salary.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Design, develop, and implement software components for our XD products embedded systems (Embedded Linux) using C/C++. Utilize deep knowledge and understanding of embedded systems, including hardware-software interactions, low-level programming, and real-time constraints. Contribute to defining and designing the system architecture, including software components, interfaces, and system integration. Write efficient, maintainable, and well-documented code, and perform debugging and troubleshooting for embedded systems. Work closely with cross-functional teams, including developers, and quality assurance teams, to ensure seamless integration and functionality of embedded software. Optimize software performance, memory utilization, and power consumption for embedded systems. Develop test plans, conduct unit testing, integration testing, and validation of software to ensure reliability and compliance with specifications. Create technical documentation, including design specifications, and guidelines for other team members. Adhere to industry standards, best practices, and coding guidelines relevant software development. Stay updated with the latest trends, technologies, and advancements in embedded systems, software development methodologies, and tools. Identify and resolve technical challenges, performance bottlenecks, and issues.

Qualifications / Skills

Comprehensive understanding of embedded systems, including hardware-software interactions, real-time constraints, and low-level programming concepts. Extensive experience in developing applications on Embedded Linux platforms, including kernel space and user space development. Understanding of Linux kernel architecture, device drivers, and kernel modules Proficiency in C/C++ programming languages, including strong knowledge of memory management, data structures, and multi-threading. Knowledge of embedded system security principles and best practices for securing embedded Linux application Understanding of embedded hardware components, microcontrollers, microprocessors, and their interfaces with software. Proficient in debugging tools and techniques for embedded systems to identify and resolve software-related issues. Familiarity with development tools such as debuggers, emulators, compilers, and IDEs commonly used in embedded systems development Understanding of network protocols (TCP/IP, UDP), network configuration, and interfacing embedded systems with network services. Ability to design, architect, and develop software solutions for embedded systems, considering constraints and system requirements. Proficiency in using version control systems like Git for managing and maintaining embedded software code. Competence in creating test plans, performing unit testing, integration testing, and validation of embedded software. Capability to generate comprehensive technical documentation including design documents, APIs, and user manuals.

• Develop components and frameworks in support of web application development efforts within Creative Cloud.

What you'll need to succeed:

• San Francisco or Remote (US)
• Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent experience.
• 10+ years overall development experience.
• Strong Web development experience - JavaScript/Typescript/HTML/CSS, experience with ES6, and Web Components / React / similar UI frameworks.
• Proficient with CI/CD and automation pipelines, and be comfortable providing guidance on best practices for DevOps and SRE functions
• Experience with Agile development processes including Scrum.
• A passion for empowering mobile application and web designers to create more engaging experiences.
• Proven results-oriented person - especially in the areas of writing high-performance, reliable, and maintainable code.
• Works well in a distributed team environment across multiple geographies; can develop strong working relationships and promote a positive, collaborative tone.
