About the role:
Powys County Council has an ‘in-house’ Engineering Design Service (EDS). The department comprises around 50 staff and has teams based in Llandrindod Wells, Newtown and Brecon although many of the team work from home when they don’t need to be on site.
EDS employs professionally and academically qualified; Engineers, Technicians and Ecologists, delivering a wide range of diverse projects. EDS provides its staff with great training opportunities with many undertaking college courses to further their academic qualifications. The service also runs an Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) approved training scheme for those pursuing professional qualifications.
The Senior Engineering Technician position typically undertakes a broad range of tasks which could include involvement with:
Highway Design & Maintenance. Structural/Bridge Design & Maintenance. Structural Inspections. Structural Assessments. Road Safety Audits. Traffic Engineering. Transport Engineering. Flood Alleviation. Drainage. T98 Inspections. Infrastructure Engineering. Environmental/Ecology Impact Assessments. Protected Species Surveys. Geotechnical Engineering. Development Control Advice. Project Management. Contract Preparation/Procurement & Administration. Site Supervision. CDM advice. Principal Designer role. Topographic Surveys. Etc.
About you:
You’ll need:
Enthusiasm for the role and a willingness to drive projects forward in an efficient manner.
Some experience of delivering civil engineering projects from inception to handover.
An ability to work effectively with others and be self-motivated with a good work ethic.
An understanding of Construction Health and Safety legislation and an appreciation of associated Environmental legislation.
Good IT skills and the capability to use various design software packages.
What you will do:
The type of schemes that you could be involved with are wide ranging. However, the key elements of the role are likely to include:
Assist in the preparation of design, calculations, drawings, contract documentation, estimates, reports, surveys for assigned projects.
Help identify problems and constraints of a site, and in consideration of the aims and objectives of the project assist in developing design solutions using your engineering judgement.
Actively monitor and supervise assigned schemes to deliver on time and to budget.
To act as Supervisor and monitor the technical control of construction of works and support the Project Manager on and under any Contract(s). To include the measurement of works and prepare accounts for interim and final accounts. Check that works are carried out in accordance with the contract and specification.
Participating in any training and development activities to maintain own professional development or to enhance competence within job role.
