The School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (SPMS) of NTU is an exciting environment for research. The Yong research group works on novel problems in biological and complex systems and has published many high impact papers in top scientific journals such as Science, PNAS, Phys. Rev. Lett., etc.

Our approach is highly interdisciplinary, using emerging state-of-the-art methods from mathematics, physics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, topological data analysis, and statistics. Understanding the structure-function relationships of biomolecules is an active area of research due to its fundamental importance in biology, physics, and engineering. The emerging field of Mathematical AI for Molecular Sciences is proposed for molecular representation, featurization, and learning. We are interested in developing physical models using graphs, simplicial complexes for molecular representation, featurization, and learning, particularly in the context of nucleic acids such as DNA, G-quadruplex. The results from the research will provide key insights to understanding the structure-function relationships of biomolecules.

The Yong research group is looking for a highly motivated and qualified Research Fellow with the ambition of producing high quality research that can be published in high impact journals. The Research Fellow will be involved in research design, data analysis, model development, numerical simulations, and report/paper writing.

The Research Fellow is expected to perform state of the art numerical simulations using computing resources from National Supercomputing Centre (NSCC) Singapore. The incumbent has freedom to design the nature and type of deep learning simulations.

Key Responsibilities:

• Utilize recently developed mathematical tools from algebraic topology, combinatorial topology, computational topology, and differential geometry (e.g., Betti numbers, Hodge-Laplacian, discrete Ricci curvature) to characterize and model biopolymers such as DNA and RNA.
• Develop simplicial models for molecular representation, featurization, and learning, particularly in the context of nucleic acids such as DNA, G-quadruple, to better understand form-function relationship in biology.

The project is funded by National Environment Agency, Singapore to address one of the largest problems in waste management – the problem of plastic waste pollution. A significant fraction of plastic waste has substandard quality for mechanical and chemical recycling even after sorting and cleaning. The Research Fellow will use pyrolysis-chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technology for converting these plastic waste streams (specifically, contaminated and rejected plastics) into multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and hydrogen. The role of Research Fellow is to develop catalysts that will allow to reduce catalyst cost and increase carbon nanotubes yield to make the process more economically viable.

Project Overview

The AMR IRG is an interdisciplinary community of biologists, engineers, and clinicians from MIT and Singapore, sharing a state-of-the art research facility and united by a commitment to providing a supportive intellectual environment where students and staff can learn, grow, and contribute to solving a pressing societal problem.

The objective of this project is to advance the field of RNA analysis by developing and implementing innovative analytical tools. These tools will be used in a comprehensive study of all forms of RNA -- the ribonucleome -- and the >170 RNA modifications -- the epitranscriptome -- in disease pathobiology, host-pathogen interactions, biomarker development, and therapeutic target discovery.

Responsibilities

The Research Engineer will plan and conduct experiments with the aim of studying the roles of RNA modifications in human immunue diseases. Research Fellow

We are seeking to recruit a Postdoctoral Fellow (Research Fellow). A person with background in molecular biology, cell culture, imaging and data analysis (including modelling and python programming) and has theoretical background on actin are encouraged to apply.

The MBI and NUS provide state-of-the-art facilities dedicated to microfluidics, high-resolution imaging, and cell culture that will support the fellow in training, setup, and execution of the project, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work closely with talented and motivated research staff, interdisciplinary PIs, and clinician scientists.

Qualifications

1. PhD in molecular cell biology or relevant biomedical disciplines. Candidates in the process of completing their PhDs in the relevant disciplines may also apply.
2. Competence in molecular biology, biochemistry, cell culture, and confocal microscopy.
3. Experiece in image analysis, photomanipulation and bioinformatics are highly desired.
4. Excellent communication and organizational skills
5. Highly motivated to work both independently and as a team member
