About the Opportunity

The SymBioSys Lab (www.simbiosyslab.com) is seeking an independent and creative postdoctoral associate to support research on computational modeling of complex protein-glycan intereactions in the broad field of glycoprotein-based therapeutic design. Strong background and experience with applications of machine learning (especially Explainable Artificial Intelligence – XAI) is required. The available position is in the Chemical Engineering Department of Northeastern University (Boston Campus). • Establish ML and XAI based models explaining structural aspects of biomolecular systems

About our lab: The overarching goal in our laboratory is to develop novel computer-driven solutions to glycoprotein-based biomedical challenges. Two independent thrusts targeting viral vaccine engineering and biomaterial design form the current research focus. This is a cross-disciplinary group at the interface of Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Physics and Computer Science. All research is expected to occur in association with other experimental collaborators (both intra- and extramural).

Qualifications:

Must have a Ph.D. or equivalent; be able to undertake substantially full-time research or scholarship; work under the supervision of a senior scholar. This position requires excellent communication skills, both interpersonal and scientific, oral, and written. Strong background and experience with applications of machine learning (especially Explainable Artificial Intelligence – XAI) is required. Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates should be enthusiastic about working in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary, and multi-project environment. About the Opportunity

Summary

The School of Architecture in the College of Arts, Media and Design at Northeastern University seeks applications for the 2024-25 Design Research and Teaching Fellowship, a one-year visiting appointment that provides emerging scholars, practitioners, and advocates of the built environment with the opportunity to develop a body of design research based on a specific area of interest while contributing to the vibrant intellectual culture of the school. The position is a non-tenure track appointment at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor and is scheduled to commence in August, 2024.

The fellowship supports teaching related to the candidate’s area of interest, as well as modest resources for the development of independent research and creative work. Fellows will have the opportunity to design new curricula for studio and seminar courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, as well as to teach within the School of Architecture’s core curriculum. They will be provided with opportunities to share their ongoing fellowship work with the wider Northeastern community through lectures, presentations, and exhibitions throughout the academic year. In particular, fellows are invited to engage and collaborate with the diverse faculty body within the School of Architecture, across the College of Arts, Media and Design, and with other colleges and centers across the University. Candidates from a variety of backgrounds, training, and perspectives are encouraged to apply for this position.

Responsibilities

The teaching responsibilities of the fellowship include three courses taught during the 2024-25 academic year. At least one of the courses will take the form of a research-centric design studio that builds directly on the Fellow’s research project, and provides a way for them to draw connections between their teaching, research, and creative practice. Other courses include design studios, research seminars or representation courses within the School of Architecture’s core curriculum where the Fellow’s unique perspective on the built environment will contribute towards the existing strengths of the department on areas such as sustainable design, urban ecologies, collective housing, public health, and material experimentation.  

As the culmination of the fellowship year, the Fellow will be invited to deliver a lecture as part of the School of Architecture’s public lecture series and/or to prepare an exhibition or other event that showcases the research, teaching, and/or creative work that they conducted while in residence at the school.

Qualifications

Candidates must hold a terminal degree (PhD, Master’s, or equivalent) in their proposed area of research by the appointment start date. Applicants with prior studio teaching experience are strongly encouraged to apply.

The Challenge:

• Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair a variety of equipment used in the long-term monitoring of physical phenomena including (but not limited to): magnetometers, spectrophotometers, CCD cameras, and other radio and optical equipment.

• Use digital and analog electronic equipment to diagnose and repair instruments and computer hardware failures.

• Support grantees by ensuring timely problem resolution, minimizing data collection interruptions, and notifying grantees of outages, issues, and maintenance schedules.

• Maintain appropriate project log books, documents and email records.

• Update standard operating procedures.

• Administer, operate, and maintain the computer-based acquisition data systems.

• Coordinate with other departments on computer configurations and networking topology issues such as firewall access and IP addresses.

• Receive and inventory capital equipment, instruments, materials, and supplies.

• Maintain accurate inventory of spare parts for equipment and instruments, and prepare resupply lists.

• Assist with life-cycle management and inform researchers/staff on replacement timelines.

Site-Specific Duties and Responsibilities: There are three Research Scientist positions, one at McMurdo and two at South Pole. Following are additional duties at these stations: Maintains, operates, and repairs cryogenic dewars, associated equipment, and compressed gas cylinders. Manages LN2 and GN2 supply for the station. Provides manual labor as needed including excavating buried experiments and performing station maintenance. Participates in community duties, which may include washing dishes and cleaning common areas.

(South Pole ONLY): Will be assigned to an Emergency Response Team (ERT). Examples are the Fire Brigade and First Aid teams which require specialized training that will be provided.

(South Pole ONLY): The South Pole positions are for approximately 13 months, beginning with 2 weeks of training in Denver in Mid-October 2024 and running through Mid-November 2025. Deployment to South Pole is from November 1, 2024 - November 15, 2025 (approximately). You will deploy from Denver directly to South Pole.

(South Pole ONLY): Will assist station meteorologist with weather observations several times a day. May involve shift work.

What Sets You Apart:

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical, Electrical, Aeronautical or other Engineering, Astronomy, Astrophysics, or Physics is required.

• Two years’ experience in laboratory or observatory technical work. Laboratory or observatory technical work should include operational experience utilizing experimental, physical, optical, or atmospheric science equipment. Experience handling cryogens preferred but not required.

• General electronic troubleshooting experience required, with a minimum of two years of experience in the use of multiple commercial software packages as well as DOS and Windows operating systems.

• Basic understanding of RF and power equipment (RF attenuators, filters, LNAs, switches, switching power supplies) desired. Experience with network interfaces helpful.

• Excellent written and verbal communication abilities required. Knowledge of MS-Excel and Word required.

• Must be organized, able to multi-task, and able to work without direct supervision.

• Successful conflict resolution experience or training, and a flexible attitude.

• Experience working with diverse groups of people in high stress situations.

$91,300-$108,000

POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for overseeing two or more domestic and/or international research projects under the direction of senior managers/directors and Principal Investigators. The Research Project Manager will be responsible for the management of all aspects of one or more NIH-funded studies that will be implemented within Boston Medical Center’s (BMC), Office Based Addiction Treatment (OBAT) Program, the largest addiction treatment program of its kind in New England. The Research Project Manager will oversee and participate in implementing a hybrid effectiveness implementation trial to compare office-based methadone (novel in this setting) and office-based buprenorphine (treatment as usual) within BMC’s OBAT Clinic. BMC is one of five sites involved in this research as part of NIDA’s Clinical Trials Network. The Research Project Manager will also support the closedown and analysis phase of the HEALing Communities Study, a large-scale, multi-site trial with the goal of reducing opioid overdose deaths. The Research Project Manager responsibilities will include working with the study team to develop study protocols, assessment instruments, and Institutional Review Board protocols; coordinating with multiple study partners (e.g., lead team for methadone trial, HEAL stakeholders); leading team meetings, and participating in national meetings as BMC representative; monitoring study implementation; ensuring study recruitment goals are met; conducting recruitment, screening, informed consent and research assessments with study participants; working with OBAT clinical team to meet study goals while ensuring minimal disruption to clinical care; tracking study retention and ensuring minimal loss to follow up; performing quality assurance checks; assisting with manuscripts and presentations; ensuring compliance with reporting to NIH; and coordinating new grant applications. The Project Manager will monitor budgets and spending and coordinate contracts with independent consults and subcontractors. The Project Manager will also be responsible for supervising and mentoring any research support staff working on a full time, part time, or temporary basis.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

The Research Project Manager (PM) is responsible for leading research projects to satisfy a defined goal or scientific objective. Duties include the following:

Project Management

• Coordinates and facilitates the research project management life cycle, including initiation, development, and implementation of various complex experimentation projects.
• Responsible for scoping, coordinating early research activities, training research staff, and managing the completion of investigational forms.
• Coordinates research teams, and manages research project timelines, to ensure research trials or milestones are completed within the specified and in line with annual objectives.
• Meets regularly with stakeholders, including research staff, clients and study teams, to collect and communicate business and research requirements, and set expectations for research-related work.
• Responsible for the completion of both research and project management deliverables, including project plans and research schedules, competitive intelligence reports, progress reports and investigational applications.
• Participate in and oversee dissemination of study findings to local and national audiences.

Research Management

• Works with Director of Research and Principal Investigators to select the most appropriate methodology and techniques for facilitating the research.
• Responsible for producing qualitative and quantitative research plans, designing research questionnaires and moderator guides.
• Works with research teams (on site and/or off-site), and the project and research directors, to coordinate fieldwork initiatives, and conduct pre-research and post-research analyses and evaluations.
• Works with research team to facilitate & ensure protocol adherence, quality assurance and HIPAA compliance.
• Collects data, summarizes and interprets research data.
• Collaborates with Director of Research and Principal Investigators to author journal articles and to present findings at research seminars, study groups and conferences.

Staff Management

• Supervise support staff (e.g., Research Assistants), including training, delegating tasks, overseeing daily activities, mentoring, guiding through demonstration of best practices and offering opportunities for professional development.
• Prepares performance evaluations, submits timesheets; responsible for hiring, disciplining and processing terminations in accordance with established polices.
• Schedules and facilitates staff meetings. Plans agenda and ensures that minutes are taken, edited and distributed.

Administrative Duties

• Manages purchasing, invoices and accounts payable for the department.  Assists with monitoring expenses, facilitating contracts, ordering materials and documenting all approved variances.
• Liaisons with Institutional Review Board (IRB) for submissions, correspondence, and regulatory binders, including administrative amendments.
• Assists with development and writing of proposals to obtain funding for ongoing and future research activities.
• Perform administrative duties associated with the study’s Data Monitoring and Safety Board, tracking and reporting adverse events and collecting data specified by the DMSB. Responsible for all other administrative duties related to research activities.

Other duties

• Complete all training required by BMC IRB, central IRBs, NIH, and NIDA Clinical Trials Network
• Conduct recruitment, screening, enrollment, informed consent, research assessments, follow up and tracking for study participants (responsible for managing own participant case load)
• Coordinate with clinicians and program leaders across BMC programs to ensure recruitment goals are met
• Program research tools using software (e.g., REDCap) to program required assessments and tools
• Performs other duties as required.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

• Master’s degree in related field (may consider candidates with Bachelor’s degree who have at least 6 years directly related research and/or clinical experience).

EXPERIENCE:

• Minimum of three years’ experience in research public health, health care administration and/or related field, including experience managing projects and operations.    
• 1 year of supervisory experience
• Experience working directly with diverse, underserved, and vulnerable populations
• Clinical trial experience strongly preferred
• Experience with Institutional Review Boards and human subjects research ethical standards strongly preferred
• Experience with or strong interest in addiction medicine

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

• Must be highly organized and detail-oriented, have exceptional oral communications and writing skills.
• Demonstrated proficiency in project management, including budgeting, planning, execution, delivery, quality assurance, and reporting.
• Understanding of clinical research and trial implementation including ethical conduct of human subjects research
• Experience in data analysis and manuscript preparation is helpful.

The Northeastern University Africana Studies Program, in partnership with the Department of History and Program in Public History announce a 2-year Postdoctoral Fellowship in Black Feminist Studies and Public History to begin July 1, 2024. Specialization may be in any area of Africana Studies in disciplines of social sciences or humanities, with a clear commitment to feminist interdisciplinary work. We welcome textual, theoretical, and/or empirical projects in any field or period that engage questions at the intersection of Africana Studies and feminism, gender, and sexuality. Research proposals should involve substantive theoretical engagement within Africana Studies and feminist/gender studies; the strongest proposals will include a project component and will embrace an intersectional approach that reckons with gender, sexuality, race, and ethnicity. Scholars working in Black feminist or African diasporic women's histories, Black queer studies, or the digital humanities are strongly preferred.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will have access to a mentor and have one writing workshop presentation and session with faculty from across the university. Recent hires in Africana Studies at Northeastern have resulted in a strong community of Black feminist scholars in the fields of history, anthropology, and literary studies making this an especially exciting moment for a Postdoctoral Fellow in Black Feminist Studies.  

Areas of particular interest in the Northeastern context include the transmission, circulation, and organization of social movements for gender and sexual equity; sexual and racial communities, cultures, and markets, particularly as these are inflected by digital culture; digital humanities theory and practice; expressive uses of media in the construction of gendered and raced subjectivities; feminist approaches to digital representational practices and systems.

Responsibilities:

The fellowship offers the successful candidate a unique platform for professional advancement: financial and material support for independent research; the ability to develop substantive interdisciplinary teaching expertise; and the opportunity to play an instrumental role in nurturing the growing digital humanities community at Northeastern University. The fellowship includes a stipend of $60,000, health insurance, office space, mentoring, and clerical support, in addition to $5000 per annum for research and travel expenses.

This fellowship combines research and teaching and is designed to support fellows in developing both their teaching skills and their research programs.  We expect:

One course will be the Introduction to Africana Studies class or another undergraduate course that will attract a broad audience. In addition, fellows will be encouraged to participate in the Northeastern Humanities Center seminar series as well as the Northeastern community at large where the themes of racial and social justice are of particular interest in this critical moment.

Qualifications:

• Applicants should have received their PhD in a relevant field between May 2020 and May 2024 and have college or university teaching experience.

The Learning and Assessment Data Specialist is responsible for the technical and analytics support for the college’s academic program evaluation process that will include: management of the AEFIS platform for the assessment of program learning outcomes; data collection, analysis, and reporting of the annual program evaluation process; manage the documentation for program evaluation; analyze, interpret, and communicate data to support program use of assessment, and teaching and learning data from AEFIS and Canvas for continuous improvement; support the development and maintenance of Tableau dashboards and data visualization for reporting. • Manage a master calendar of all assessment deliverables related to internal and external program reviews

• Audit assignment linking in AEFIS prior to term start to ensure data inputs are accurate and complete
• Represent the needs of CPS learners and faculty in conversations with the Office of Institutional Assessment concerning tools and platforms that support College and University assessment and reporting strategies.

Qualifications:

This person must demonstrate the ability to work with minimal direction and have a high level of skills in academic assessment data analysis and visualization, written and verbal communication. The successful candidate must have a demonstrated track record and willingness to engage with academic and operational staff, both within CPS and across the University, to coordinate and better facilitate data acquisition, integration, and coordinated reporting. The Data Manager is responsible for information system management and best practice standards to improve data quality across NU-RES applications (e.g., eCD eCLAWs ePAWs), which includes analyzing data collection workstreams, creating processes and procedures, recommending new policies, and monitoring the collection and storage of NU-RES data; they will work closely with the NU-RES Director of Research Operations and Systems and eRA Systems Manager on implementing NU-RES’s digital strategy through evaluation of enterprise data standards, technology, and processes.

The Data Manager is responsible for educating and training end-users on sound data quality standards and internal control practices, fostering a culture of quality client service; assessing and interpreting data in support of operational excellence and data-driven decision making by senior leadership.

The Data Manager will evaluate how digital governance of research data impacts data quality and will work to maximize the value of analytics and innovation to transform the university’s data reporting capabilities, while encouraging the adoption of contemporary methods, practices, and measurement outcomes, producing consistent and accurate information.

This position requires a high level of competence with research administration (including regulatory requirements related to research and sponsored programs) and information technology; excellent analytical skills with ability to work with large and complex data sets; strong leadership and project management skills; experience in creating and executing local data governance policies, procedures, processes, and standards; an ability to facilitate communication between and among groups that may have different needs and priorities.  The Data Manager must have a strong commitment to creating positive client experiences and supporting individuals who work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. 

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related field.

• A minimum of (5) years of experience with data quality, data analysis and information system management.

• Experience and understanding of research administration and regulations related to research and sponsored programs.

• Demonstrated ability to implement continuous improvement and innovation tools and techniques.

• Excellent analytical, curiosity, problem-solving, and effective written and verbal communication skills.

• Proficient IT skills with Microsoft Suite, Tableau, SQL, and Cognos

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

40% - Data Quality Analysis: Use data analysis to identify data quality issues and determine how to solve them. Analyze data utilized by cross-functional teams to ensure data integrity, recognize, analyze trends and/or anomalies; maximize the value of accurate analytics to transform the university’s research reporting capabilities; design data quality standards for research data and develop a best practice to align best the most accurate and consistent outcome of information.

30% - Reporting Analytics: Collaborate with Senior Data Analyst to identify appropriate categories of data, summarize and analyze in custom ad hoc reports.  Through Critical Thinking, analyze the data usage by performing assessments on data end-to-end. Define and design the data quality rules by understanding the needs and demands from user community.

15% - Digital Governance, Improvement and Training: Troubleshoot discrepancies and delegate to the appropriate personnel for correction. Consult with functional and technical staff and data stewards about meaning, use, reliability, and maintenance of data elements. Contribute to continuous process improvement in report analysis and trending methods. Manage and maintains all data governance and data quality related documentation. Establish the effective data quality rules by ensuring data validity, conformity, completeness, and timeliness.

15% - Project Management: Oversee the completion of tasks or projects. Define business rules for measuring data quality and profiling new data sources. Work with data engineers to enhance and refine data quality metrics.  Use effective communication to convey messages, explain processes, and answer questions.
