The Trustees are seeking to appoint a Learning Support Assistant within Excelsior Academy Primary, to start as soon as possible.



If you have experience as a Learning Support Assistant or similar role and would like to work in a Primary setting then this could be the role for you. The successful candidates will work collaboratively with teachers in relation to planning, pupil progress and assessment and will also work directly with pupils providing one to one or group support to pupils of all abilities. This includes planned sessions as well as responding to situations as they arise.



Excelsior Academy is an All-Through Academy providing education for students aged 3 – 19, serving the West End of Newcastle. Working at Excelsior, you will play an important role in our continuous drive for further improvement.



The successful candidates will join Laidlaw Schools Trust (a Multi Academy Trust) where all Academies support each other to the benefit of our pupils and their families. Our Academies also enjoy strong support from an experienced LST central team based in Newcastle upon Tyne.

What skills and experience we're looking for



The Governors wish to appoint some additional Learning Support Assistants to join our existing team and to support students, especially those with SEND, throughout the school. The successful applicants will be hard working, flexible, and have excellent communication skills. It is essential that any applicant enjoys working with and supporting young people, as this is an essential part of the role, however we encourage you to apply, even if you do not already have direct experience of working with children or young people, as full training and unstinting support will be given. We are looking for individuals who can engage with students and support them in overcoming a range of learning difficulties. The successful candidates would also need to be prepared to support the Catholic/Christian ethos at St Mary’s in this role. English to GCSE or equivalent is required.

St Mary’s is a very popular and happy school, rated Outstanding by the Diocese and Ofsted. We became an academy in 2013 and enjoy outstanding facilities in a new building, which opened in 2011. We joined the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust in June 2020. We are also very popular with parents and are one of the most over-subscribed schools in the North-East. The roll has grown from around 1100 five years ago to over 1440 by September 2023, with 5 main school year groups of around 235 and a Sixth Form of approximately 270 students. We expect the Sixth Form to continue to grow in the next couple of years, as strongly academic year groups continue to move into Sixth Form.



As an Outstanding school, St Mary’s plays a leading role within the Trust and more widely, leading significant school improvement, training and leadership development across other schools, as well as sharing good practice in academic achievement and teaching and learning across many other schools in the north-east. Talbot House Children's Charity are a registered charity with a School and Residential Children's Home on the same site. Set in 8 acres of beautifully maintaining gardens and land, you would be forgiven if you thought we are based in the heart of the countryside, however, we are based in Walbottle, Newcastle upon Tyne, offering an easy commute for all.

The Charity are looking to recruit additional Learning Support Assistants (Teaching Assistants), to work within our School (KS1 & KS2) to help support our ever growing pupil numbers within our Blue Zone.

The suitable applicants must have experience of working with SEN pupils with complex needs, including SEMH, ASD, ADHD, trauma and attachment, some of pupils may have multiple complex needs.

We are a small non-maintained school with pupils ranging from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 4. Class sizes are rarely bigger than 6 pupils.
