Main Duties and Responsibilities The post holder will be required to undertake duties relevant to the area you may work in. These may include some of the following duties and responsibilities; Clinical Works collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to support the development and delivery of personalised family centred care. This includes providing assistance and advice regarding infant feeding, hygiene, safety and supporting the establishment of parenting skills. Demonstrates understanding of health promotion and participates in delivering health promotion activities including, but not exclusively, smoking cessation, diet, active lifestyle, infant feeding, screening, and immunisation options available to women and babies Supports the delivery of parent education sessions to individuals and groups. Ensures women and their families are aware of external support systems available and facilitates signposting and access as required. Acts as an advocate for women and provides reassurance appropriate to role. Asks for and listens to the views of families and women, and communicates any issues or concerns to the midwife or team leader. Supports maternal and neonatal basic care needs as required. Undertakes maternal and neonatal observations, documents findings, and escalates observations that fall outside of normal parameters to a registered midwife Ensures that all clinical documentation is accurately, collected, updated, stored, and filed in accordance with local the information governance and record keeping policy and guidance. Undertakes maternal blood tests as required. Undertakes neonatal blood tests via the heel prick method. Implements clinical care and care packages (under the direction of registered midwives). This may include, but is not limited to performing ECGs and supporting the midwife at a delivery) Provides advice as appropriate within own sphere/limitations of practice. Generates ideas for quality improvement and participates in developing and evaluating ideas using quality improvement methodology. Acknowledges personal and professional limitations and works within agreed competencies liaising with and referring to a midwife or relevant professionals as required. Actively supports education and development of colleagues by sharing knowledge and skills as required. Maintains personal development and reflect on practice to enable the development, delivery and evaluation of outstanding evidence-based care. Governance Adheres to information governance principles and maintains confidentiality at all times. Demonstrates understanding of and upholds the organisational values. Works within organisational policies and procedures to ensure maintenance of safe working practices for women, their families and colleagues. Escalates any issues or concerns through the appropriate channels defined by organisational policy. Complies with Trust mandatory training as required 5. INFECTION CONTROL The jobholder must comply at all times with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Infection Control policies, in particular by practising Universal Infection Control Precautions. Hand hygiene must be performed before and after contact with patients and their environment. 8. HEALTH AND SAFETY / RISK MANAGEMENT All staff are responsible for working with their colleagues to maintain and improve the quality of services provided to our patients and other service users. This includes complying at all times with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Policies, including Health and Safety policies, in particular by following agreed security and safer working procedures, and reporting incidents using the Trust Incident Reporting system 9. TRAINING AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT CONTINUOUS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT The jobholder must take responsibility in agreement with his/her line manager for his/her own personal development by ensuring that Continuous Professional Development remains a priority. The jobholder will undertake all mandatory training required for the role. 11. COMMUNICATION & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS The post holder will work under the direction and supervision of a registered midwife or other member of the maternity team, to undertake tasks and duties to support the delivery of maternity care. Direct communication with users of maternity services and their families is essential to the role. Due to the diversity of the population we serve, there may be situations where the audience may not easily understand information due to cultural or language differences. In these cases, the post holder will be equipped with tools (eg accessing interpreting services on an ipad) to support communication. The post holder will also be expected, in the course of carrying out their duties, to communicate professionally with other people within the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust. These may include (but are not limited to): Registered Nurses, Midwives and Practitioners Clinical Educators Support Workers Assistant Practitioners Medical Staff Allied Health Professions Operating Department Practitioners Portering House Keepers Community Services 12. SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS i) PHYSICAL EFFORT: There is a frequent requirement to undertake moderate physical effort during each shift e.g. assistance with patients personal care. This post requires manual dexterity (for tasks such as venepuncture and cannulation), hand eye co-ordination, and frequent moving and handling of patients and equipment with trained knowledge, including equipment to support this. The post holder will be required to stand for periods of up to an hour (undertaking maternal observations and patient support, for example), and frequent walking will be required during the course of their shift. They may also be required to sit, kneel or crouch to attend to patient needs. In emergency situations, the post holder may be asked to collect equipment or resources from another ward area as quickly as possible. Moving and handling of patients and equipment is likely to happen on a daily basis: Patients - with lifting aids, and as a team where necessary (weight 1-200kg) Equipment - medical equipment, specialised mattresses (weight 1-20kg). ii) MENTAL EFFORT: There is a requirement for periods of concentration during a shift (likely to be between 8-12.5 hours long), though work pattern should largely be predictable. The post holder may have to change tasks at the midwifes request in response to emergency situations or changing workload demands, including prioritising tasks as appropriate to the work environment. There is a responsibility to notice and react to concerns for a patients wellbeing or deteriorating condition. The post holder will use IT systems and periods of concentration and time (up to one hour at a time) spent using display screen equipment will be required. iii) EMOTIONAL EFFORT: The post holder may provide emotional and psychological support to women during pregnancy, labour and postpartum. The post holder may be required to participate in the care and support of women following a pregnancy loss. Exposure to obstetric emergencies and distressing situations may occur. These may include death and dying, as well as distressed patients, relatives or carers. iv) WORKING CONDITIONS: The post holder will frequently be involved in the joys and complexities of childbirth which can include direct contact with blood and bodily fluids. Ability to work within a busy and fast-paced environment, completing tasks in a timely manner to contribute to the smooth running of the area is required. Childbirth is a highly emotive time and as such there may be exposure to verbal and physical behaviour on occasion. The NHS has a Zero Tolerance approach to any abuse of its workforce. If experienced the post holder should report this to security and escalate to the midwife or line manager as per Trust policy.
