Area Information
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula on the south shore of Lake Superior between the communities of Munising (population 2,500) and Grand Marais. The duty stations for these positions are at Munising and Grand Marais. Government housing may be available for rent. Amenities in Munising include basic shopping, medical facilities, and K-12 schools. Grand Marais has a population of less than 500 people and shopping is limited. K-12 schools are available in Grand Marais. Basic shopping and medical facilities for those at Grand Marais are available 60 miles away in Munising. Summers are generally warm and pleasant. The winter season may extend from October to May and is often characterized by cold temperatures and seasonal snowfall in excess of 140 inches. The area is rich in outdoor sporting activities including hunting, fishing, hiking, boating, biking, camping, and skiing.

MAJOR DUTIES:

• Engaged in assisting in the maintenance and construction of graded and paved trails, trail drainage, trail bridges, and guard rails.
• Assists in the installation, repair and replacement of water diversion bars, cribbing and retainer walls.
• Removes windfalls, rockslides, surface outcroppings and debris from trails. Builds up tread surfaces in eroded areas. Installs stepping stones at creek crossings where bridges cannot be constructed.

Position will assist in the trade's areas of carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical and masonry depending on project. The selectee of this position leads a crew of lower-level co-workers (laborers) involved in the construction, repair, and upkeep of government facilities, buildings, boundary fences, roads, culverts, corrals and trails. Duties will include but not be limited to window repair and replacement, door repair and replacement, patching walls and ceilings, roof repair and replacement, fixture replacement, plumbing repair or replacement, floor installation, siding repairs, interior and exterior preparation, painting, insulating and general home maintenance. The selectee receives oral and written instructions from the General Foreman and is responsible for safely and efficiently carrying out the assigned duties and completing daily work reports. The selectee operates and maintains equipment and vehicles like farm style tractors, bobcat skid steers, backhoe's, pickup with trailers, air compressors, pneumatic hammers, plate compactors, pneumatic and steel faced compactors, motorized brooms, snow plows and pressure washers. Selectee also digs holes, mixes and pours concrete, installs drainage pipe, cleans culverts and auto gates. Major Duties

MAJOR DUTIES:
