The primary purpose of this position is to assist in the maintenance, repair, alteration, and construction of masonry structures and surfaces made of stone within Shenandoah National Park Trails and Backcountry Facilities Branch. This TERM project work will repair and maintain rock structures as well as rehabilitate masonry wall structures, repair and restore tread surfaces and critical trails structures, and restore trail drainage structures to improve safety and prevent tread washouts. Duties include:
- Performs and leads masonry project tasks to include bridge abutment repair, step, retaining wall, rip rap, and water bar construction.
- Cuts trees, performs heavy vegetation management, and cleans erosion control structures on wilderness and non-wilderness trails with axe, chainsaw, crosscut saw, power weeder, lopper, brush cutter, pick, McLeod, etc.
- Operates and maintains power equipment such as mortar mixers, chainsaws, brush cutters/chippers and all types of hand and light power tools.
- Operates vehicles such as pickups, panel trucks, flatbbed trucks, UTVs, etc. to transport personnel, material, and equipment.
- Hikes up to 10 miles on backcountry trails carrying up to 50 pounds to perform trail masonry, trail maintenance and trail rehabilitation work.
This is a TERM position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of three years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service.
The National Park Service retains the right to extend the duration of this appointment after selection and/or appointment, based on changes to the regulation governing the number of years term appointments may last. This change, which may be made at the agency's sole discretion and without further competition, shall not be construed or interpreted as the granting of a right to a selectee or employee to such an extension. No extension to a term appointment shall be granted to a selectee/employee to an amount of time that exceeds the maximum number of years authorized under any present or current regulation, unless such regulation expressly allows such action.
A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.
POSITION LOCATION: Shenandoah National Park preserves and protects more than 300 square miles of nationally significant natural and cultural resources, scenic beauty, and congressionally designated wilderness within Virginia's northern Blue Ridge Mountains; and provides a broad range of opportunities for public enjoyment, recreation, inspiration, and stewardship. Within just 90 miles of Washington D.C. the Park provides visitors the ability to explore mountain peaks, hidden hollows, cascading streams, accessible wilderness, and stunning natural beauty. Approximately 40% of the Park is designated wilderness with over 500 miles of hiking trails and the iconic Skyline Drive, SHEN was established as an eastern Park that provided a "western Park experience". Due to the Park's easy accessibility to D.C and other highly populated areas along the east coast, visitation exceeds 1.4 million visitors annually which results in significant resource protection and visitor management issues and incidents.
