The role of an Assistant Quantity Surveyor

My client is seeking an enthusiastic, detail-oriented Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join their established team in their Northern Region. You will be reporting to the commercial lead on the project and play a vital role in delivering value, controlling costs and supporting the successful completion of the project.

Responsibilities of an Assistant Quantity Surveyor

• Assisting in preparing budgets, cost plans and valuations
• Conducting site visits to monitor progress and assess variations
• Working closely with operations, design and health and safety teams towards key project targets
• Establishing and developing productive and professional working relationships with stakeholders at all levels
• Supporting the monitoring of cost control and implement cost mitigation strategies, assessing risk, at all times acting fairly and reasonably
• Contributing data to assist with the production of a monthly commercial report, fully describing the position and plan for management of risk, opportunity, cost and value for those sub-contracts delegated to you to manage
• supporting to ensure timely agreement of final accounts with your supply chain packages

This position is Temporary to Permanent for the right candidate.

Job Role

The role requires managing all commercial and financial aspects of assigned projects and contracts to ensure completion is on time, within budget and to legal and quality assurance requirements and regulations.

The role will include:

A good understanding of all aspects of civil groundworks infrastructure.
Strong communication skills with statutory bodies on environmental, drainage and highways.
Comply with responsibilities as laid down in the Group’s Health, Safety and Environment Policy.
Contribute to the management of a range of legal and contractual issues to ensure the project remains profitable while complying with Group guidelines.
Appoint and retain subcontractors, including sourcing and negotiation of contracts, to ensure resources are available to achieve targets.
Work cohesively with other departments across the Operating Company to ensure achievement of targets.
Produce accurate and timely valuation reports for bespoke developments and management information to enable the Commercial management team to make informed business decisions.
Advocate the Group Health, Safety and Environment Policy while ensuring compliance throughout the team to ensure health and safety standards are met.


Specific Requirements:

HND or HNC degree in construction related subject.
Relevant experience gained with a proven track record in a volume-driven housing development environment.
Knowledge of cost control, work in progress, procurement and commercial aspects.
Knowledge of the COINS system would be desirable but not essential as training will be provided.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
Fully conversant with Microsoft Package, including Excel and Word.
Familiar with balance sheets, profit and loss accounts and business plans.
You must be an enthusiastic and hardworking individual who is willing to undertake all necessary training.
CSCS card required and current driving licence required for site visits.
The hours of work are Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, with an hour for lunch break.

The salary is £15 - £20 an hour, depending on experience and this will be reviewed after a 6 month period.

As an Assistant Quantity Surveyor, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. Join us, and support our expanding growth whilst driving projects to improve the agreed profitability and cash projectstions.

Day to day, you'll develop core commercial, company and industry related skills and knowledge, whilst building the business function and client relationships. You'll also be expected to:

• Assist in commercially managing a contract (or contracts), providing a comprehensive and professional commercial service from contract award to completion.
• Prepare change control and applications for payment in a timely manner for review and submission to the client.
• Support, from commencement to completion, the provision of all commercial deliverables in line with contract requirements and timescales (including supply chain contracts).
• Work with commercial and contract lead to ensure all change control are submitted promptly in accordance with the contract(s).
• Conduct cost control, cash collection, change control, account administration, claims etc.

This role is full time OR part time, 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with three days in the office/onsite and two days working from home.

Essential experience of the Assistant Quantity Surveyor:

• Experience/knowledge within/of quantity surveying.

• BSc in Quantity Surveyor or equivalent qualification.
