This is a full time, temporary position offering between £48 - £52 per Umbrella LTD (Inside IR35) dependant on Registered Status, Class 2A - 2F.

The purpose of the role is to manage workload to meet statutory time limits, performance standards and service level agreements.

Responsibilities:

• To be responsible for managing customer relationships, providing professional customer orientated service and promoting the Building Control Service at all times
• To determine Full Plans Notifications and issue decision notices
• Processing of Building Regulation notifications including the provision of pre-application advice
• The inspection and certification of building work
• To be responsible for ensuring effective enforcement where the Building Regulations have been contravened.
• To respond to notifications of dangerous structures and recommend appropriate action to the Building Control Manager

Requirements:

• Minimum level of qualification is to have successfully completed a Building related course of study such as NVQ level 4 or HNC. A degree level qualification in construction related studies would be desirable and registration with an appropriate professional body (CABE, RICS, CIOB) at Technician or Associate level
• The post holder is required to work independently away from the office but with the support of the Senior Building Control Surveyor
• Good level of IT skills and knowledge of the practical application of IT systems and the use of Microsoft Office
• Is able to express themselves clearly in verbal and written form
• Has an understanding of the Building Regulations and their application
• A diplomatic and tactful approach to dealing with negotiation and potential conflict situations

National Highways have an exciting opportunity for a Quantity Surveyor to join our Commercial team within Operations. The Quantity Surveyor will provide expert commercial and contract management services to the National Highways Maintenance and Response Framework Contract and provide commercial advice and support to the service delivery team and manage a portfolio of cyclic maintenance, reactive maintenance and minor capital works in the value of £30 to £40 million per year.

What you'll be leading on

To be successful

• Extensive experience working as a QS within a commercial function delivering value to the business, preferably experience working on civil engineering projects.
• B.Sc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying or similar or have secured chartered professional status with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS or above), the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (MCInstCES or above) or an equivalent membership of a relevant professional body (Candidates not holding chartered professional status must be able to demonstrate substantive and direct personal experience working as a quantity surveyor having regard to the experience requirements listed under business knowledge and experience above)
• Demonstrable experience of delivering quantity surveying/commercial functions, preferably in a civil engineering/infrastructure environment.

The Role

Your responsibilities will include receiving work orders and scheduling work diaries for trades employees completing repairs and maintenance works for our residents. You'll enjoy liaising with trade staff and other repairs staff to make sure all appointment targets are met and liaise with residents about their scheduled repair and maintenance works.

The ROLE
An exciting opportunity for a Structural Engineer to build your career within our team based in the South West for this well established consultancy, the successful Structural Engineer Candidate will be required to simultaneously work on an eclectic mix of projects in a variety of arenas to;

About the role

In this role you will take ownership of operating and overseeing the maintenance of the leats canal, river banks and infrastructure by applying your experience in using a range of various methods such as stone walling. As an Estate Worker, you will have experience in digger driving, chainsaws, stonewalling and footpath maintenance, blended with an awareness of the countryside, willing to work in all weather conditions and knowledge of Dartmoor.

What you’ll be doing:
• Repair and maintain the water courses and sluices, using traditional methods in stone, concrete, timber, metal and granite etc.
• Tree felling, grass cutting, painting, fencing and general duties.
• Routine tasks, such as reservoir safety checks, leat inspection and trash clearance at reservoirs and intakes.
• Operation of machinery, including fixed and mobile plant including trash rake cleaners, dumpers, swing shovels, pumps, concrete mixers and grass cutting machinery etc
• Repair and maintenance of grounds and buildings.
• General building work.
• Adjustments to equipment controlling machinery such as intake gates, reservoir levels and trash rakes.
• Assist in the management of spares and stores.

What we are looking for:
• Full UK Driving Licence
• Technical skills

The Trainee Surveyor role:

You’ll have responsibility from day one; your time will be split between “on the job” training and working on live projects/contracts. You’ll learn all the skills you’ll need for a bright future in our growing business from our experienced Surveyors, Managing Surveyors, Commercial Managers and Business Managers.

As a Trainee Surveyor, you will learn how to actively price materials and labour for our repairs and maintenance workstream, focusing on reducing costs and improving efficiencies, therefore having a real impact on our profitability and our commercial success.

How will you do this?


Initially supporting, but developing responsibility for the financial and technical aspects of the contract, including procurement, invoicing, payments, cash flow and cost control
You will learn to understand how to create cost efficiencies where possible, maximising value and ultimately making a profit
Collaboration- you will meet and work with direct labour and subcontractors, understanding their roles and expectations of the service we deliver in the response product
We will instil confidence in your communication, to develop and maintain relationships with your team, customers, subcontractors, suppliers, and our client
You will learn how to procure materials and sub contractors, through negotiation skills
You will support and learn how to produce monthly commercial reports, including Cost Value Reconciliations, so you become accountable for the cost and profit of the contract
As your training progresses, you will be involved in tendering and winning new work and managing relationships with our key clients.


You may not identify with all the terminology, but that is where the Trainee Surveyor programme, your mentor and the business will support you in your development journey.


You will join other trainees in attending a structured modular training programme delivered by our own Academy, and, depending on your experience, you could also achieve further professional qualifications externally i.e. Level 4 Apprenticeship Quantity Surveying.

On completion of your training scheme, you will begin on the Ian Williams Surveyor pathway, and we are proud to say that many of our trainees have progressed to management roles within Ian Williams.

Who you are

As a minimum you will need to be educated to at least A-level standard, or equivalent i.e Level 3. You will have achieved a Maths GCSE (or equivalent) grade 4/C or above.

Although not essential to your application, a surveying related qualification, or industry experience would be advantageous.

You may have completed some work experience in the industry already, or be completely new to it – but either way we would expect you to show passion and acknowledgment/ understanding for the work we do.

You would describe yourself as having a logical, analytical approach, an interest in numeracy/ maths, excellent IT skills. You enjoy engaging with a wide variety of people, including internal and external stakeholders, whether its building rapport within the team, negotiating or building relations with new contacts.
