Your new role
Working on an exciting project in Cambridgeshire, they require a Design Manager to manage design teams and all the processes in relation to producing a set of construction issue deliverables that a building can be built from.The role can encompass overseeing internal and external design consultant teams, controlling the development of the design concept into manufacturing and managing the installation information.


Some duties to include:

• Manage the design process using commercial, contractual, programme / time awareness and technical expertise.
• Review and assist in tender opportunities and value engineering.
• Engage with and manage the external consultant and sub-contractor design teams.
• Prepare, manage, monitor and report on the Design Information Release Schedule, Design Programme and Design Responsibility Matrix.
• Ensure the design process recognises current legislation, standards and codes of practice where appropriate.
• Develop and implement the drawing and document control systems and protocols.
• Review and assist the Project Manager and Project Planner in developing the construction programme in conjunction with the design programme.
• Assist the Commercial Team in preparing and developing the procurement schedule.
• Lead and chair the project design team meetings and design coordination workshops.
• Assess and review project design information for content, quality, health & safety, CDM and compliance
• Assist the Project Manager and Project QS in reviewing scope of all variation and change control requests.
• Implement and manage the site RFI process and register.
• Liaise with clients, contractors, subcontractors, statutory authorities and stakeholders as required to build key project relationships.
• Manage client expectations and requirements, and promote and manage client engagement within the project team.
• Provide support and advice to clients as to their requirements and obligations in the development of building design.
• Ensure design information is of the right quality and keeps pace with project timescales.
• Strive to eliminate health and safety risks in the design and financial risks during construction.
• Assist in on-site SHEQ and preparation of site health and safety plan, site traffic management plans & site fire plans when required.
• Assist in development of company BIM standards and BIM implementation on projects when required.
• Undertake Quality Inspections, review preparation and content of site quality plans file.

Current live projects include new build NHS and student schemes SEN schools, Life Sciences schemes, Office and local authority developments ranging from £25 to £90 million on JCT and NEC forms of contract.

The role of design Manager includes early involvement at tender and bid stage, working with the estimating and commercial teams to carry out a detailed and forensic investigation into the scheme and work on the key packages to explore and identify both opportunities and potential issues with critical pathways, carry out ve exercises where needed and use your skills and expertise to create detailed input for the tender and bid packages. You will be responsible for the information flow between client, consultants, subcontractors and your own internal teams and take the lead on the framework schemes.

You will be responsible for taking the scheme from tender, bid including full detailed 2nd stage works, contract award and finally onto site for the construction phase. You will be responsible for management and implementation of the design on site with the project manager and site delivery teams and subcontractors and take responsibility for managing rfi's, change process, cdm regulations etc. through to handover, commissioning.

You will ideally have worked for a tier 1 or larger regional contractor on schemes above £10 million and have experience of both D&B projects and framework negotiations, be able to demonstrate excellent work practices, attention to detail, organisational skills as well as the ability to identify opportunities and potential issues.

Design Manager - Cambridge South Station

Murphy are currently recruiting a Design Manager to lead a multi-disciplinary technical team as part of the Cambridge South Station Infrastructure Enhancement Project. You will be responsible for delivering safe, practical and economic designs for one of our major high value projects, which is Cambridge South Station to a high standard of professional competence and in compliance with Company procedures.
Cambridge South Station comprises the design & construction of a new four platform railway station and with lineside infrastructure enhancements extending up to 2km either side; the station provides connectivity between Addenbrooke’s Hospital and the Cambridge Biomedical Campus with destinations such as central London, Stansted Airport, Ely and Birmingham. This will be a rewarding role offering the successful candidate an excellent project to work on, the opportunity to continue to develop and further their career inside a growing Tier 1 contractor.

What you will be doing

- Manage the integration of design disciplines and interfaces with external and in-house design teams with project values ranging from £0.5m to £30m +
- Managing a team of Assistant Designs Managers and Design Coordinators
- Represent the design department when necessary at internal and external meetings and, in the absence of the Lead Designer, to be the focal point of contact within the department
- Liaise with other departments and project teams within the Company with respect to design requirements
- Undertake site visits when appropriate
- Allocate design tasks to individuals within informal internal teams whilst maintaining responsibility for the team’s overall performance
- Ensure that the work in the department is carried out in accordance with Company procedures and that a high level of professionalism is maintained
- Ensure that chargeable work is identified and evaluated including the preparation of adequate records of time spent
- Ensure feedback on design work is collated and saved in accordance with procedures
- Carry out staff appraisals when required and identify appropriate development activities
- Manage the preparation of GRIP stage 1-4 design (concept through to single option approved in principle)
- Manage the preparation of GRIP stage 5-8 design (detailed design, construction phase design support, and project close out)
- Work collaboratively with the wider engineering team, in particular the CRE’s (Contractor’s Responsible Engineer’s) and CEM (Contractor’s Engineering Manager) to ensure all designs are produced in accordance with company procedures and Network Rail standard NR/L2/INI/02009
- Monitor and control cost and programme for the design phases

Who we are looking for

- Experienced in managing designs within the railway environment and able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of Network Rail’s standards and processes
- Management skills and confident when dealing with staff, clients, figures, design issues and programmes
- Computer literate with a good working knowledge of Microsoft packages, including Microsoft Project
