Data and information are critical to every decision we make when it comes to protecting and improving the country’s environment. This is an exciting time to be part of how we enable our data and information assets to support transforming our business.
This role will help us to make best use of our data and information assets through ensuring they are findable, accessible, interoperable, reuseable and stored appropriately.
This is a new role, and you will help us translate business requirements, shape our strategic data roadmaps including data storage and how these could be delivered.
You will:
• collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand strategic data storage requirements, document these and translate these into technical delivery roadmaps including ‘as is’, ‘to be’ and transitional states.
• help us to design, develop and establish data architectural principles, policies and standards for data storage working with our IT providers and others.
• maintain appropriate quality and architectural coherence of a technical design in response to change.
• optimise and refine technical designs throughout the life cycle of data and its storage.
• work with our national leads providing specialist input to our priority projects including data basics, trustworthy data, data storage, information management and delivering FAIR principles.
• carry out horizon scanning across industry, identifying emerging trends and their potential impact and opportunity for the organisation’s data storage.

The team
The Data Management team is part of the Data and Information department, within the Strategy, Transformation and Assurance directorate. We are experts in data management, integration, architecture, standards and quality. We work with the business to provide services, leadership and best practice to improve ways of working, deliver efficiencies and improve confidence in our data. We work with teams from across the Environment Agency and Defra to support our strategic business and data outcomes.
Experience/skills required
You will be an experienced technical architect who has a focus on delivering data solutions and can demonstrate:
• leading and delivering work packages.
• developing strategic data storage approaches and translating these into practical delivery.
• communicating effectively across an organisation making complex and technical information accessible to a range of audiences, including non-technical ones.
• identify and address architectural risks relevant to your domain and maintaining appropriate quality and architectural coherence.
• aligning your work with the work of other architects and technical professionals.
• tracking emerging issues, strategies, roadmaps, and technologies to assess opportunities and risks to your work.
• using feedback to optimise and refine technical designs throughout their life cycle
• relevant architecture qualification or experience.
