Position Overview:
Under the direction of the Engineering Manager, the Design Engineer is responsible for the generation of quality engineering drawings, using the company approved engineering drafting standards and procedures. Suggests product improvements, maintains knowledge of the products and their proper application. Keeps abreast of any technological changes which affect the company’s product. Collaborate with other departments. Work on small projects or portions of larger projects. Receive directions from Manager or Engineering lead on projects.
What You'll Do:
Communicate and work with others in Design Engineering and other departments.
Prepare accurate drawings of a new design.
Acquire knowledge of the product and apply to specific applications.
Make calculations on tolerance stack-up of multi-component systems, apply and specify correct standards related to strength of materials, torque, fit, temperature, performance, etc.
Prepares layouts and detail drawings of new or modified parts.
Understand geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
Source and validate components as required (working with test lab technicians).
Prepares bills of material for these product and engineering changes. Releases engineering change notices.
Performs assigned tasks related to engineering and drafting.
Uses 3D solids CAD software with finite element analysis tools for design & analysis of products.
Apply, recommend, and follow lean initiatives/practices.
Prepares reports for customers to communicate verification and validation activities related to new designs/changes/deviations.
Adheres to all safety rules and report questionable conditions to the department manager.
Requirements:
Willingness to work "hands-on" to build/create new things and to troubleshoot problems is a must.
The ability to read and interpret documents such as manufacturing drawings, general business periodicals, professional journals, safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, technical and procedure manuals, and government regulations.
Ability to effectively communicate and present information and respond to questions from groups of employees, managers, customers, clients, and the public.
Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, required.
1 year of experience in mechanical engineering, preferred.
Manufacturing experience, preferred.
Proficient in the use of Solidworks.

This position may require occasional travel, 10- 20%. The employee must be able to fly or drive out of town to attend meetings with members of other Altra facilities or customers and suppliers or to attend training. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and peripheral vision.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal to moderate.
