Summary of Job Duties:
The Accounting Manager supervises a staff of four (4) in the General Accounting area of Financial Services. In the absence of the Director of Financial Services, the Accounting Manager may assume the temporary role of duties of this position. The Accounting Manager researches and resolves issues related to financial transactions and financial reporting for all departments. This position is instrumental in financial statement preparation and reports to the Director of Financial Services. The position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.
Qualifications:
Required Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or equivalent education;
- Three (3) years of progressive experience in accounting, financial management, or a related field.
OTHER JOB-RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS.
Preferred Education and/or Experience:
- Master of Business Administration and/or Certified Public Accountant; Higher Education Accounting/Finance experience;
- Workday Finance Experience, Ellucian Banner experience.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee general accounting functions;
- Establish internal control policies and procedures to ensure that accounting standards are met;
- Prepare reports and surveys, as required by regulatory agencies;
- Prepare annual financial statements and documents in support of internal and legislative audit activities;
- Oversee reporting, file transfers, and reimbursement requests in the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration’s AASIS system;
- Ensure all accounting transactions are accurate, timely, and comply with Federal, State, Arkansas Department of Higher Education, Board of Trustees and University regulations and policies, and generally accepted accounting practices;
- Lead and manage the annual accounting cycle, including month-end close, quarter-end close, and fiscal year-end close;
- Oversee and maintain accounting accruals, assets, fund accounting, inventory, capital expenses, state appropriations, reconciliation of cash and bank accounts, closing journal entries and chart of accounts to ensure financial statements are complete and timely;
- Manage the work of other employees, make hiring decisions, provide coaching, training, and mentoring, manage performance, determine staffing needs, develop and ensure succession planning within area of responsibility;
- Oversee and maintain university personnel access to University ERP Finance systems;
- Work collaboratively with departmental budget and finance managers as needed in assisting with monitoring financial transactions, including education;
- Work collaboratively with the Bursar’s Office, Procurement Services, and the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs to ensure financial transactions comply with generally accepted accounting practices;
- Record/analyze various financial transactions;
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to analyze and reconcile complex financial information in a computerized accounting environment;
- Ability to demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication;
- Knowledge of principles and practices of accounting, particularly as they relate to sound financial management in higher education;
- Ability and desire to work in a collaborative environment and be innovative and creative in the development of accounting procedures;
- Ability to participate in and lead a workgroup;
- Ability to organize, prioritize, track, and complete assigned tasks;
- Ability to stay current on changes in accounting for higher education;
- Skilled in using Microsoft Office, including Access, in a large and complex accounting system;
- Skilled in interacting with a variety of people.
