The Division of Earth Sciences supports proposals for research geared toward improving the
understanding of the structure, composition, and evolution of the Earth, the life it supports, and
the processes that govern the formation and behavior of the Earth's materials. The results of this
research will create a better understanding of the Earth's changing environments, and the natural
distribution of its mineral, water, biota, and energy resources and provide methods for predicting
and mitigating the effects of geologic hazards such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods,
landslides.

Earth science is the study of the Earth's structure, properties, processes, and four and a half billion
years of biotic evolution. Understanding these phenomena is essential to maintenance of life on
the planet. The expanding world population demands more resources; faces increasing losses
from natural hazards; and releases more pollutants to the air, water, and land. Sustaining our
existence requires scientific understanding of the natural materials and processes linking the
geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere. Life prospers or fails at the surface of the
Earth where these environments intersect.

The employee in this position reports to the Division Director of the Division of Earth Sciences (EAR) and will provide support for the activities and programs as well as the related programs across the Division. The position includes a wide spectrum of research facilities, grants policy and process administration activities in support of the organization. In addition, the employee will help develop reports, analyses and presentations regarding the facilities portfolio of the Division. These activities will involve day-to-day interactions with staff throughout the Division, Directorate, other Directorates, and with other Federal Government organizations. The employee will be expected to acquire knowledge of, and experience with, NSF activities regarding the Government Results Performance Act, Committee of Visitor processes, Federal Advisory Committee Act requirements, and NSF proposal and award management policies. The employee will also support both in-reach and outreach activities.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Major duties for the Science Analyst include, but are not limited to the following:

• As requested by the Division Director, develop one-of-a-kind reports, studies, and analyses on EAR programs and related topics for the Division. This may include activities and discussions that involve staff within the Division, Directorate, across NSF organizations, and with external organizations, both public and private. Access to information and data from a wide variety of sources may be required and these data may include Controlled Unclassified Information. The ability to synthesize disparate information into coherent work products is essential.
• As requested by the Division Director, assists in the creation of presentations, including talking points, speeches, or presentation slides. Topics may cover various disciplines supported by NSF. Background information may often need to be gathered from sources within the Division, Directorate, the Agency, or from other sources.
• Work with the Division Director and Deputy Division Director to compile and
  present data and information on program portfolios and outcomes that inform expert
  assessment of the overall Division's programs. Results may be published and maybe
  used at Advisory Committee meetings, Committee of Visitors meetings, cross directorate meetings, and other internal and external fora.
• On behalf of the Division, participate in other NSF and interagency activities related to assessment and evaluation of EAR programs . This responsibility includes liaisons with, and contributions to, budgetary and reporting groups, as well other Federal R&D Agencies. It also includes developing and sharing best practices regarding the assessment and evaluation of EAR programs, as well as maintaining awareness of related NSF activities, notably COV processes, statistical reporting, and program activities in facilities and technology policy.
• Serve as a point of contact for activity outcomes for EAR. Coordinate the development and submission of highlights for all programs managed within EAR. Work with the Division Director on approval of the highlights. An understanding of the breadth of programs supported by the Division is required.
• Assists the Division Director in the oversight of Committee of Visitor processes, providing guidance to the Division and programs on results- oriented activities.
• Draws on knowledge of program portfolios and results to assist in the merit review and award oversight processes as appropriate, particularly for the Division's multidisciplinary activities.

As a Biological Science Technician (Fisheries) within the Eastern Ecological Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

• Assist in ecological investigations on a river/stream, in a boat, wet lab, unheated flume/hatchery facility or other field environment.
• Rear fish in ponds, tanks, and raceways and preform associated laboratory maintenance and animal care protocols.
• Install, configure, and operate radio and passive integrated transponder (PIT) telemetry system; perform system operation checks; and retrieve data.
• Work with others as part of a team to accomplish goals.
• Assist scientists and engineers in collecting, assessing, and evaluating experimental data.

• The duties may include, but are not limited to:
• Plans, organizes, and conducts direct control operations to reduce wildlife damage within a geographical area or technical/subject area.
• Inspects and surveys areas and, as necessary, will revise existing WDM programs.
• Determines strategies and logistics for providing services.
• Uses WDM tools/devices which may include some or all of the following depending on need in assigned area: firearms; foothold, body-grip, cage traps; foot snares; neck snares; chemical control methods.
• Utilizes knowledge of WDM methods and strategies to independently recommend appropriate WDM strategies.
• Modifies or adapts established damage control techniques as necessary to meet local conditions.
• Assists in the negotiation of cooperative service agreements with landowners, lessees, or administrators.

• The duties may include, but are not limited to:
• Plans, organizes, and conducts direct control operations to reduce wildlife damage within a geographical area or technical/subject area.
• Inspects and surveys areas and, as necessary, will revise existing WDM programs.

• Position entails a variety of technical laboratory analyses evaluating food and water for the presence of harmful bacteria and other microbial agents to include diagnostic tests and technical support work in the fields of microbiology and immunology.
• Assist in the preparation of routine and special media, reagents, stains, and other supplemental items needed for the growth of microbial organisms.
• Participate in method verifications, validations and other investigative projects and laboratory analyses as assigned.
• Operate specialized equipment (microscopes, autoclaves, balances, centrifuges, Vitek, Atlas, Vidas, stomachers, biological safety cabinets, and fingerprinting equipment items etc).
• Maintain stocks of microbiological diagnostic reagents, Petri dishes, pipettes, and consumable supplies in order to sustain an adequate inventory.
• Report unusual and significant results to the Microbiology Supervisor by inputting information into worksheets, logbooks and charts.

• Perform a full range of laboratory testing to include but not limited to Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, or Blood Bank section.
• Resolve technical problems and ensures remedial actions are taken whenever test results deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
• Ensure the quality control system is at the appropriate level to properly monitor testing performed by laboratory personnel.
• Evaluate reports by analyzing facts and performing appropriate research and prepares detailed responses.
• Compare new methods or instrumentation with existing ones to determine performance characteristics suitability.
• Perform various tests that may stand alone or in an algorithm of other laboratory testing to diagnosis and assess the prognosis of patients.

Key Responsibilities:

• Optimize procurement activities to ensure materials availability while minimizing inventory costs.
• Supervise and lead delivery of raw materials and services to meet R&D project goals and objectives.
• Actively works to support the development of new technologies and supplier capabilities.
• Lead new supplier introduction by populating address, bank details, contact info, tax info, goods or services offered, risk assessment into SAP Ariba.
• Develop, monitor, and report supplier performance with KPI's including benchmarking with other companies/industries.
• Drive root cause investigation of supplier issues through the use of corrective and preventative action (CAPA).
• Provide support for invoice queries.
• Participate in continuous improvement activities to acquire the best value for Alcon.
• Be proficient at oral / written communication in order to optimally explain sophisticated ideas and approaches to a wide audience.
• May participate as an active member of project core teams to develop and deliver upon project schedules.
• Maintains accurate inventory management, material tracking.
• Knowledge of ISO, FDA, MDD and regulations applicable to the design and development of Interocular devices.
• Experience working with large data sets and being able to interpret the data to make recommendations and/or decisions from the data.
• Experience working in Microsoft Excel, SAP, SAP Business Intelligence, Tableau.

Key Requirements/Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school +10 yrs; Assoc.+6 yrs; M.S.+0 yrs).
• The ability to fluently read, write, understand, and communicate in English.
• 2 years of Proven Experience.
