As a SURFACE MAINTENANCE SPECIALIST, GS-1601-09, you will analyze and resolve a variety of conventional maintenance management problems to improve existing maintenance operations, production, and practices that impact the overall maintenance program; Analyze the effectiveness and efficiency of maintenance management, repair, and training; and the need for improving existing practices; Develop goals and plans to ensure maintenance production standards are met; Coordinate with shop leadership to resolve conflicts affecting maintenance production or the shop backlog rate; Assess impact on the maintenance shop due to new equipment fielding, mission changes, new directives, manpower utilization and authorizations, etc; Work with other organizations to increase the effectiveness of the maintenance program; Establish methods and procedures to ensure maintenance tasks performed meet or exceed established policies and regulations; Disseminate to the maintenance shops, technical guidance and directions received form the Department of the Army (DA), National Guard Bureau (NGB), the J-4/G-4, or the Surface Maintenance Management Office; Contact depots or manufacturers to clarify procedures or gain insight regarding better methods of repair or maintenance; Schedule and conduct periodic meetings with shop leadership to disseminate information and standardize procedures; Visit maintenance organizations to assist with technical problems, evaluate shop operations, and determine adequacy of production; May serve as a member of the Command Maintenance Evaluation Team (COMET) ; Analyze COMET results, develops action plans to correct problems, and monitors implementation; Monitor the organization's use of automation to properly account for manpower utilization and materials management; Oversee and provide technical guidance regarding Class IX (Class 9) repair parts management; develop policy and procedures; and evaluates and revises, as needed; Coordinate with the USPFO and other installation organizations to resolve problems; Establish and monitor the shop safety and health program; Provide instruction, investigates accidents, and assures facilities meet established requirements; Oversee the hazardous waste/industrial hygiene program for maintenance shops;, Must know Global Combat Support Service - Army (GCSS-A), Perform other duties as assigned.

Pay Rate by Location:

Buxton, North Carolina: $40,132 per year.
Nags Head, North Carolina: $40,132 per year.
Ocracoke, North Carolina: $39,576 per year.

Major Duties:

Assists in conducting wildlife censuses and surveys and assembles basic information on wildlife
populations such as habitat use, sex, age structure, seasonal movement, and harvest characteristics.

Collects data on condition of forage, range, or streams; and makes preliminary determinations on the
cause of problems noted, e.g., drought, overpopulations, toxins. Seeks assistance for situations not
covered by instructions or guidelines.

Assists in the preparation of reports, plans, and guidelines on such issues as recreational use
or hunting limits by collecting and compiling the specified data.

Uses standard statistical methods and procedures in performing routine and recurring testing of the field
data collected, and applies these findings in assisting with the preparation of reports relating to field
activities.

Enters and retrieves data from Geographic Information System (GIS) and/or other information
management systems. Prepares graphs, charts and illustrations for reports and technical publications
using computer software.

Monitors and assists in control of wildlife. Participates in the capture of wildlife, applies visual and radio
tags, and gathers physiological and spatial data on wildlife.

Utilizes databases to enter and organize collected field data and uses standard statistical methods in the
preparation of draft reports; enters and retrieves data from a geographic information system (GIS) and
other information management systems; uses a variety of computer software programs to prepare
graphs, charts and illustrations for reports and technical publications.

Recommends modifications to field activity procedures to accomplish project objectives; and prepares
draft reports and correspondence relating to field activities and results.

Provides logistical support and area orientation for contract or cooperating scientists; and provides
technical information to cooperators regarding past and ongoing field activities in their specialty area.

Provides advice, assistance, and training to lower graded technicians, volunteers, and/or YCC enrollees
in gathering field data, including proper and safe handling of equipment and tools and operation of
motorized vehicles.

Interacts with visitors, the general public and attends and participates in meetings with landowners,
interest groups and local units of government.

Adheres to established control/quality assurance protocols and safety procedures.
