The purpose of this position is to perform minor construction and repair on existing structures involving standard measurements, specifications, instructions, and basic shop mathematics. Installs exterior and interior trim using preplanned materials, such as baseboard, and molding. Replaces broken or missing acoustical ceiling tile, broken door and window trim, window screens, stairway steps, wooden porches, door jambs, and other damaged wood components. Responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of gasoline powered equipment to ensure equipment is in good mechanical and safe operating condition. MAJOR DUTIES:

This Maintenance Mechanic position is assigned to the Facilities Division of Big Bend National Park and directly reports to the Supervisor for Buildings and Utilities. The incumbent will perform custodial duties daily, and occasionally in multiple location. Must have basic knowledge of cleaning products and supplies and how to safely use them. The incumbent should have basic knowledge of common building materials, paints, and petroleum products.

The incumbent will assist higher graded workers preform repairs and routine maintenance in constructing, altering, modifying, or repairing a wide range of features in buildings interior and exterior including framework, rafters, joists, insulation, sheet rock, doors, windows, and flooring. Should be able to identify common material needed for carpentry and painting work. The incumbent will be required to assist others with installing and repairing any combination of plumbing fixtures, meters, pumps, couplings, unions, and joints needed for proper operation of the plumbing systems. Incumbent may be required to use a variety of hand and power tools and must operate them safely. Carries heavy items to and around work sites. PROPERTY MAINTENANCE

• Perform maintenance repairs throughout the property including the common area amenities, occupied units and vacant units.

• Maintain a schedule for timely completion of apartment make-readies, ensuring that all apartments scheduled for move-ins are completely ready for the new resident prior to move-in.

• Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification strongly preferred.  Associates hired without a CPO certification will be required to obtain within 90 days of hire.

• High school diploma or equivalent required.

• A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation is required. 

• Technical knowledge in the following areas: electrical, plumbing, HVAC, swimming pool, carpentry, dry wall, exterior structural, and appliance repair is required.

• Ability to read, write, understand, and communicate in English.
