Balfour Beatty is currently looking for a Substation Technical Manager to join our Power Transmission & Distribution business. Our substation team are based in Derby/Newcastle but as the projects are UK wide, candidates can be flexible with office/home and site based travel.
Role Purpose:
To ensure all Commissioning Managers, Commissioning Engineers/Technicians and Site Managers/Supervisors are adhering to the Operational procedures.
Provide technical advice and guidance for all substation projects (from tendering through to project completion) and all available site budgets.
Strategic lead for the current and future allocation of site resources as required in line with key programmed dates and central resources.
What you'll be doing
Job Competency:
In conjunction with the Commissioning Manager confirm the competency and authorisations of all installation and Agency Staff on all sites, includ- ing all Commissioning Engineers and Commissioning Technicians;
Review Commissioning responsibilities and ensure reporting streams are maintained;
For partner/consortium working ensure the division of responsibilities are understood by Project Manager/Engineer and to be aware of and plan to mitigate the potential impacts to the delivery of the overall project.
Tendering:
Provide support and technical requirements into estimates and tender schedules together with the commissioning manager;
Review estimates and assist with site visits and clarification as required;
Attend the project handover meetings to aid clarification with site based staff.
Training:
Train / assess staff in all areas of substation project site delivery with particular emphasis on the installation and commissioning work;
Assist in training new and current commissioning engineers, project engineers and site managers in BBPT&D substation build process, requirements, site procedures and quality requirements;
Procedural:
Ensure all site procedures are being adhered to;
Ensure productivity reporting is established via the Project manager, with input to the cost reports;
Ensure QA standards and hold points are consistent for all sites, reviewed and actioned. Stress the importance of subcontractor sign off process for the works being undertaken.
Reviewing/writing National Work instructions and be the document authoriser for Power T&D substations.
Planning:
Check the project status with Site managers. Feed back to the Project Manager if required;
Attend and visit sites to review and improve project safety, productivity progress and performance;
In conjunction with the project managers, confirm the major stage commencement, completion dates and Quality process for all sites;
Attend and assist in preparing project board Reviews and Site commencement meetings;
Review site mobilisation with the project manager.
Liaise with the site teams to ensure all site plant/tools are maintained to the required standard and required certificates are in place.
Who we're looking for
Essential
- Electrical Engineering Degree
- Relevant transmission operational substation experience & authorisations
- Knowledge of planning process within Transmission Substation experience
- Experience of writing Technical documents such as working methodologies
- Working knowledge of National Grid and or SSE Substation practises.
- Understanding of Commissioning practises
Desirable
- Proven hands on Commissioning experience
- Project Commercial Awareness
- Experience of Mobilising Substation Projects
- Evidence of developing technical competence for operational roles
- Chartered Engineer Status (or working towards)
