Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to program management/administration, supervision, clinical and education.
Program Management/Administration
- Oversees the implementation of the pharmacy procurement and inventory programs.
- Responsible for monitoring, communication and coordination of drug and supply recalls, conversions, special handling medications, drug alerts and shortages.
- Serves as the pharmacy recall coordinator by developing and implementing action plans to manage drug recalls.
- Collaborates with Pharmacy Leadership to develop and implement a VAWW Pharmacy cost containment strategic plan by fully utilizing the VISN and National PBM pharmacoeconomic resources and community by translating national data, innovations, and recommendations into local process improvement that maximize fiscal responsibility and providing clinical review and recommendations to develop drug conversion plans to address drug shortages, pharmacoeconomic initiatives and emerging safety concerns.
- Responsible for pharmacoeconomic outcomes and analysis, performance measures, and impact assessments designed to maximize both resource utilization and quality patient care.
- Interfaces with internal and external customers to identify, develop, and implement appropriate formulary programs, outcome assessments, and cost containment activities.
- Manages the non-formulary and prior authorization drug approval process including the establishment and implementation of programs for the appropriate and cost efficient use of selected drugs that are high cost and subject to inappropriate use.
Supervision - Analyzes current and future workforce requirements to determine competencies and skills needed.
- Successfully transitions new hires into the position by promptly communicating performance elements and standards within applicable timeframes, providing ongoing feedback and coaching, and making appropriate use of the probationary period to assess the employee's ability to perform.
- Establishes results-oriented plans with subordinate employees with cascaded goals within 60 days of the beginning of the performance appraisal cycles.
- Appropriately identifies and addresses specific, performance-related deficiencies with the employee in a timely manner to ensure employee is given every opportunity to improve to a successful level of performance.
- Develops the ability of the subordinate staff and others, as appropriate, to perform and contribute to the organization through coaching, mentoring and providing ongoing feedback and by granting opportunities to learn through formal and informal methods.
- Appropriately recognizes and rewards employee's contributions and performance in accordance with policy and within established timeframes.
- Works with the servicing Human Resources Management Office, as appropriate, to ensure that an employee's conduct deficiencies are addressed expeditiously.
- Ensures that subordinates complete all mandatory training on a timely basis.
Clinical - Drug Therapy Monitoring.
- Serves as a drug information resource for other health care providers, answering inquiries regarding therapeutics, drug interactions, dosing, side effects, etc.
- Report any adverse events to VADERS and create order sets for high cost and specialty pharmaceuticals to provide guidance to prescribing, monitoring, and formulary compliance.
- Track patients using high-cost medications to verify therapeutic goals are being met, with an eye on optimizing medication management if they are not achieving desired therapeutic outcomes.
- Performs prescription processing activities in outpatient and/or inpatient pharmacy areas.
Education - Provides proactive, ongoing communication related to the pharmacy programs under their supervision to professional staff via Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee meetings, Medical Staff meetings, Pharmacy Staff meetings, and individualized meetings, as appropriate.
- Serves as a resource and provides information and education to staff, Pharmacy Residents, and Pharmacy Students in areas of Inventory Management and approved clinical guidelines to reduce unnecessary and inappropriate use of drugs.
- Works with the Pharmacy Leadership to identify targeted drug therapy interventions.
- Participates in the precepting or training of pharmacy residents, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, students and other medical center personnel as required.
