Department/Location:Technical Services Alexandra and Kidderminster Hospitals Accountable to:Technical Services Supervisor / Manager Job Purpose To provide a responsive and efficient technical support service for medical devices and decontamination equipment within, and on behalf of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. To perform all duties required to provide safe operation of medical devices and decontamination equipment throughout their life cycle, this will include; pre-purchase assessment/evaluation, commissioning, planned preventative maintenance, breakdown repairs, calibration checks, regulatory testing and decommissioning as required and consistent with the post grade. All procedures are to be conducted within the departments quality procedures. Dimensions The post-holder will work under the supervision of senior graded staff as required. The post has no budgetary responsibility. There is a shared responsibility to maintain all items of medical equipment varying in complexity from simple battery operated equipment to advanced life support systems appropriate to this posts grade. The post-holders working base will mainly be mobile within the hospital site and significantly Ward based. The post-holder will be expected to travel between Trust sites and other clients as and when required. The post-holder will participate in a 24hour on-call rota as required with supervision from senior graded staff. Key Relationships Internal: Nursing and Medical staff (all grades) in all clinical areas, other healthcare professionals, department managers and staff, patients, relatives, Estates and facilities staff (all grades). External: GP surgeries, other hospitals, manufacturers and representatives, Medical Healthcare products Regulatory Authority, Patients and relatives. Risk Assessment Duties includes: open live working at low and high voltages (at high current capacity), chemical and biological hazards, high temperature pipework, high pressure steam and vacuum systems, operating active surgical and therapeutic equipment, lifting heavy equipment up to 30kg (with assistance). Works with contaminated equipment and sharps. Works with visual display screen equipment on a regular basis (occasionally for long periods). Key Responsibilities 1.Responsible for the maintenance, under supervision as necessary, (includes whole life-cycle of equipment, pre-commissioning evaluation, commissioning, planned maintenance, breakdowns and de-commissioning), of a wide range of patient connected medical equipment, decontamination equipment in a safe, efficient and responsive manner causing the minimum disruption to patient services. 2.To work within clinical areas with Medical and Nursing staff, (including patients), to resolve equipment issues as they arise. 3.Will monitor progress on individual work requests in their charge to ensure an efficient resolution. 4.Will produce accurate service reports of work undertaken for audit purposes, (technical, financial, quality and statutory) 5.Will operate the Technical Services database and all computer applications required to calibrate, test and repair equipment. 6.Will operate all relevant test equipment and advise the Senior Technician or Technical Services Manager of any issues as they arise. 7.Will participate in a rotational on-call system as and when required with supervision from senior graded staff. (Only when deemed competent to do so). 8.Will maintain good communication links with other departments and external bodies to uphold better understanding of clinical applications and needs. 9.Will keep the Senior Technician or Technical Services Manager informed of potential risks to the service, general issues that are appropriate to the delivery of the service. 10.Will ensure that all procedures to maintain the quality systems and Health and Safety policies of the department are adhered to, and will actively participate in any audit of the system that is deemed necessary. 11.Will keep abreast of and keep fully aware of technology development on matters that affect or are associated with the Technical Services Department. 12.Will attend manufacturers and health service courses to obtain the necessary skills to undertake the duties of the post and maintain records of training received. 13.Will identify potential savings and implement measures to realize these when requested to do so. 14.Will maintain the departments stock system, and ensure adequate stock levels are identified and refreshed as necessary.

Carry out Mechanical planned preventative maintenance work in accordance with Estates schedules and accepted good working practices in order to ensure safe and reliable engineering services. 2. Where necessary, carry out fault diagnosis and repairs to the hospitals mechanical installations and plant, including ventilation, heating, air conditioning, water systems so as to maintain a safe and reliable service. 3. Overhaul, renovate and repair worn, failed or damaged mechanical plant and installations 4. To carry out any necessary mechanical engineering tests or measurements, in compliance with accepted standards, good industry practice and the Estates Department schedule of inspection. 5. Become familiar with and when adequately trained carry out basic electrical fault diagnosis and repairs 6. Participate fully in all relevant estates procedures and ensure completion of all necessary documentation in accordance with Estates Department policies. 7. Where instructed install and test new mechanical installations in accordance with the current standards, good industry practice and hospital standards 8. When required advise others on the correct operation of equipment to which you are conversant. 9. Record work information as required for operation of the Planet FM management system. 10. Wear the appropriate protective clothing and footwear, uniforms, safety wear and equipment as deemed appropriate to the job and as required by the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, Estates Department. 11. Where necessary induct and instruct other staff on duties in support of your own. 12. When required give assistance and support to other trade disciplines within the Estates Department to ensure an efficient estates service is provided. 13. To become fully conversant with the function of all mechanical and electrical systems within the remit of the Estates Department. 14. When required provide assistance to the electrical and building trades staff. 15. When required participate in the gritting and snow/ice clearance of the Hospital roads and pavements. 16. Be able to read, understand and work from engineering and architectural drawings. 17. To carry out all duties in a safe manner, having regard for the safety of others. 18. To undergo all necessary update and health & safety training 19. To carry out routine testing of essential systems and equipment e.g. fire alarm, nurse call systems, steam raising boiler plant, hospital generators, etc., recording results in accordance with Estates Department policy and procedures. 20. Become conversant with the hospitals Building Management System to an extent that alarms can be interpreted, actioned and reset. 21. Participation in response/emergency teams for fire, major incident and any other requiring an Estates Department input. 22. When required drive the Trust vehicles. 23. To assist in the upkeep of a small mechanical material store and to identify and if necessary order components required to complete repairs. 24. To be responsible for the upkeep, tidiness and maintaining of a safe working environment in the workshops and engineering plant rooms. 25. Where necessary undertake training and operate any computerized systems that are used within the Estates Department. 26. To liaise closely with all modern matrons, ward sisters and heads of departments with regards to electrical maintenance and other relevant estates matters. 27. When required oversee mechanical contractors working on site (This may involve organizing the isolation of mechanical systems for work to be carried out, to include the issuing of relevant permits etc.) 28. To assist in maintaining the documentation associated with the Hospitals mechanical systems. 29. Carry out the execution of any other duties as relevant to the Estates services, which may be allocated by management. 30. Be prepared to be available, within reason, to work at short notice, out of normal hours, in emergency situations. 31. Carry out emergency lift procedures, as and when required.
