Analysis and Judgement

· To carry out vehicle equipment checks and restock as required at the start of duty in accordance with Trust policy and procedures, ensuring that the vehicle is roadworthy, properly kitted, cleaned (paying particular attention to infection control) and stocked, faults or omissions reported and all appropriate recording procedures completed.

· To drive Trust vehicles in accordance with the Road Traffic Law, the Highway Code and Trust policy guidelines and current legislation.

· To report any incidences of risk, neglect, abuse or endangerment to vulnerable children or adults in accordance with Trust Safeguarding policy.

· To report any untoward incident immediately and in accordance with Trust policy. This may include participate/attend court, or other legal proceedings, as appropriate.

· To carry out daily routine vehicle checks, e.g. oil, water, brake fluid, battery levels and tyre tread pressure.

· Responsible and accountable for ensuring those vehicles are in a roadworthy condition before use.

· Report any defects and / or damage as required (vehicle daily inspection) to the Operational Station Manager / Fleet Engineering Manager as appropriate.

· To maintain the interior and exterior of emergency vehicles in a state of cleanliness in line with current Infection Prevention and Control Policy.

· Use all Trust / Service equipment, facilities and premises in a careful and proper manner, with due regard for the security of such items and safety of self and others.

· To carry out daily equipment checks, maintain and clean equipment following patient use adhering to current Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Policy.

Patient and Client Care


• To respond immediately to emergency calls, hospital admissions, hospital transfers and other operational transport duties, as indicated by the Emergency Control Centre. This needs to be in accordance with operational requirements, clinical guidelines, local competencies, policies, protocols, scope of practice, and procedures. This needs to be commensurate with this role as part of a clinical crew or as a solo response to back up a clinician already on scene that has requested back up.
• To ensure compliance with the appropriate sections of the JRCALC guidelines, policies, procedures, protocols and scope of practice at all times, being personally accountable and responsible for clinical decisions made during the course of duty, ensuring patients receive the highest quality and standard of holistic care and attention.
• To ensure informed consent is obtained before treatment or intervention is undertaken, and to ensure that the communication of information between self, the patient and colleagues is handled sensitively, clearly, pro-actively and in a manner mindful of patient confidentiality.
• To ensure a continuous duty of care to patients, within the level of training and competency of this role, ensuring an appropriate level of monitoring and treatment is maintained and continued until the patient is either discharged or transferred to the care of another healthcare professional.

Communication and Relationships To maintain timely communications with the Emergency Control Centre. To communicate and work with other emergency services, relevant authorities, healthcare professionals and the general public in an appropriate and professional manner. To ensure that the Emergency Control Centre is made aware of operational availability and respond as instructed at all times. Identifies and uses the most effective means of communication appropriate to the situation and the individuals involved. Is motivated to work together with others and in a variety of different teams to ensure effective teamwork. Analysis and Judgement To support the work of qualified practitioners by using appropriate knowledge and skills in order to assist them make professional judgements, conducting diagnostic procedures and treatments, under the supervision of a qualified practitioners, safely and to the appropriate level of training and competency for the role, in accordance with procedures, guidelines, scope of practice and protocols. To carry out vehicle equipment checks and restock as required at the start of duty in accordance with Trust policy and procedures, ensuring that the vehicle is roadworthy, properly kitted, cleaned (paying particular attention to infection control) and stocked, faults or omissions reported and all appropriate recording procedures completed. To drive Trust vehicles in accordance with the Road Traffic Law, the Highway Code and Trust policy guidelines and current legislation. To maintain competency to operate all equipment clinical, non clinical, and information systems - used during the course of duties, ensuring the efficient and effective operation of equipment, and the safe use of equipment at all times, reporting faults in the appropriate manner. To ensure that all clinical waste is disposed of according to Trust policy and current legislation. To provide initial scene management and support to qualified practitioners, when first on scene in the case of multiple casualties and major incidents, in accordance with Trust policy and procedure, until relieved by an appropriate officer. To assist in HALO (Hospital Ambulance Liaison Officer) duties at receiving hospital when required, having responsibility for the care of patients, in line with their scope of practice, in the department with other IWAS colleagues and working closely with hospital staff in the management of patients. To report any incidences of risk, neglect, abuse or endangerment to vulnerable children or adults in accordance with Trust Safeguarding policy. To report any untoward incident immediately and in accordance with Trust policy. This may include participate/attend court, or other legal proceedings, as appropriate. To carry out daily routine vehicle checks, e.g. oil, water, brake fluid, battery levels and tyre tread pressure. Responsible and accountable for ensuring those vehicles are in a roadworthy condition before use. Report any defects and / or damage as required (vehicle daily inspection) to the Operational Station Manager / Fleet Engineering Manager as appropriate. To maintain the interior and exterior of emergency vehicles in a state of cleanliness in line with current Infection Prevention and Control Policy. Use all Trust / Service equipment, facilities and premises in a careful and proper manner, with due regard for the security of such items and safety of self and others. To carry out daily equipment checks, maintain and clean equipment following patient use adhering to current Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Policy. Planning and Organising To undertake all mandatory training and training related to the advancement of patient care commensurate with this role. To undertake continuous professional training and development, maintaining a portfolio of practical and clinical evidence, in accordance with the requirements of the Trust. Learns from experience and strives to continually improve Patient and Client Care To respond immediately to emergency calls, hospital admissions, hospital transfers and other operational transport duties, as indicated by the Emergency Control Centre. This needs to be in accordance with operational requirements, clinical guidelines, local competencies, policies, protocols, scope of practice, and procedures. This needs to be commensurate with this role as part of a clinical crew or as a solo response to back up a clinician already on scene that has requested back up. To ensure compliance with the appropriate sections of the JRCALC guidelines, policies, procedures, protocols and scope of practice at all times, being personally accountable and responsible for clinical decisions made during the course of duty, ensuring patients receive the highest quality and standard of holistic care and attention. To ensure informed consent is obtained before treatment or intervention is undertaken, and to ensure that the communication of information between self, the patient and colleagues is handled sensitively, clearly, pro-actively and in a manner mindful of patient confidentiality. To ensure a continuous duty of care to patients, within the level of training and competency of this role, ensuring an appropriate level of monitoring and treatment is maintained and continued until the patient is either discharged or transferred to the care of another healthcare professional. To be involved in see and treat scenarios and often communicating with patients GPs/ OOH services and other referral pathways which include falls, safeguarding, Mental Health to manage patients appropriately when supporting the clinician. To ensure that a clear handover report is provided when the patient is handed into the care of another health professional. This should record all pertinent patient information, in accordance with Trust procedure and that the transfer of patients into the care of others is conducted according to procedure. To ensure the safe transfer of patients, to and from vehicles, following health and safety and other appropriate protocols and procedures, being mindful of the safety of patients, self, colleagues and others, using appropriate equipment and manual handling techniques. To respond to and communicate with patients, relatives, colleagues, other health professionals, other emergency responders and members of the public in a calm, caring and professional manner, treating them with dignity and respect at all times, regardless of the circumstance. To ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained at all times and that personal / clinical information is only disclosed in accordance with Trust policy, procedure and protocol and in accordance with Caldicott regulations, whilst ensuring that all appropriate information is recorded in a timely and efficient manner. To undertake a dynamic risk assessment on arrival at the scene of an incident in accordance with Trust policy and professional guidelines, having due regard for the health and safety of self and others, and to request additional support appropriate to the circumstances through the Emergency Control Centre. To practice in accordance with protocol and current legislation governing the use and administration of medicines and prescription only medicines specifically oxygen, Entonox and/or standard operating procedures where applicable to the role. To be responsible for the security of patients property and patients valuables during the transportation and hand-over at their destination. To respond to significant, major or hazardous incidents in accordance with policy, procedure and guidelines. Service and Policy Development Proactively and positively contributes to the successful overall performance of the Trust. Support the Service in achievement of the National Ambulance Response Programme performance standards (ARP). Managing Financial Resources To ensure efficient use of medical supplies ensuring adequate levels are available throughout the shift. Ensure Ambulance Resources are refuelled in line with policy and Standard Operating Procedures. People Management and Development To maintain a current valid driving licence and produce all relevant documentation on request by your Line Manager. To undertake all mandatory training, re-certification and any advancement in patient care training commensurate with the role. Information System use and management To ensure compliance with: Patient Clinical Record completion (including electronic) Clinical Guidelines Patient Care Record submission to Medical Records Patient Care Record pulling for audit purposes Any other documentation relating to Trust business Comply with Trust / Service procedures and current legislation on drug acquisition, administration, relevant record keeping and security. Involvement is Surveys and Research Carry out tasks relating to evaluating services e.g. staff questionnaires, audits, clinical and / or equipment trials. Freedom to Act and Autonomy To work to level of training commensurate with the role and following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Clinical Responsibilities To prepare bed spaces in preparation for receiving patients Assist to ensure the ward is restocked and have shared responsibility for maintaining the cleaning of clinical areas To assist with the admission and discharge of patients The post holder will be required to work as part of a skilled team to support the provision of an effective and safe clinical service Work as part of a team under supervision to provide a safe, effective environment of care for patients, relatives and their carers. Under direction of a registered practitioner, to support a comprehensive level of care, maintaining high standards and continuity of care to patients Support the registered practitioner in the delivery of direct and indirect patient care Under the direction of a registered practitioner, undertake a range of delegated clinical duties including record keeping, patient observations ,specimen handling and participate in wound care Under the direction of the registered practitioner check sterilised equipment, ensuring related paperwork is in order and completed correctly To assist in ensuring all written documentation is completed, i.e. Patient care plans and charts Use the Patient Centre system for relevant purposes Assist with the provision of the day-to-day management of clinical equipment and report any problems to senior colleagues, completing the necessary documentation Communicate with colleagues, patients and their relatives/ carers in a professional and compassionate manner. To escalate any concerns about a patient to the relevant practitioner immediately Assist patients with activities of daily living whilst ensuring the privacy and dignity of the patient is maintained at all times, for example, undressing, chaperoning, emotional and physical support overcoming barriers to communication Ensure patients, visitors and staff are dealt with sensitively and professionally with due regard to ethnic origin, culture, religion, disability and sexual orientation Acting as a positive role model for peers, supporting other HCAs as required Maintain professionalism at all times and respect colleagues To deal with queries and problems from patients and staff, both on the telephone and personally, in a positive and helpful manner and escalate as appropriate Attend department meetings Ensure a safe environment in the department for patients/staff and visitors and inform the Ward Matron/ Nurse in Charge of potential hazards. Comply with COSHH regulation and other Health and Safety legislation Assist in the evaluation of new equipment and resources To undertake phlebotomy tasks as required upon completion of the competency Be able to use any information technology within the department
