Role Summary:

To manage and ensure the function of the Medical Department throughout the Academy. Supervise and support the medical staff, sports science, nutrition and psychology staff at the academy. Provide first class physiotherapy and injury prevention services to all Millwall Academy Players when necessary and delegate responsibilities to the appropriate staff.

Key Responsibilities:

The role includes, but is not limited to:

• Manage the day-to-day operations of the Academy Sports Science and Medicine department across all phases.

• Develop and maintain effective communication strategies to all staff, players and parents regarding the departmental philosophy and operations.

• Lead and manage all departmental staff through processes of appraisal and individualised continued professional development strategies.

• Continue to progress and improve the academy athletic development strategy across all phases.

• Ensure appropriate medical staffing across all venues including training, matchdays and tours etc. for all age groups, in accordance with the Youth Development Regulations and Best Practice Guidance.

• Manage and deliver a strategy for the maintenance of medical notes/records for all academy players in line with CSP and HCPC guidance.

• Responsible for supervising the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of all players across the academy whilst delegating responsibilities to the appropriate medical staff.

• Responsible for the smooth running of the injury prevention programme on a day-to-day basis, utilising the department’s therapists and sports science staff when needed based on the departmental philosophy. Includes daily pre-activation and prehab programme organisation and implementation.

• Ensure the management of injuries effectively meets its commitments to the players, coaches and senior management through accurate documentation on The Millwall Intelligence Platform.

• Ensure all medical notes are up to date within 24 hours of treatment and logged on The Millwall Intelligence Platform.

• Deliver indoors (physio room and gym) and outdoors (on field) rehabilitation sessions according to departmental rehabilitation syllabus and safely return to play.

• Accompany players to medical consultations at short notice, ensuring best practice is always followed and the player receives the optimal advice at all times.

• Ensure the academy operates following the EPPP rules and lead the audit preparation of the medical department.

• Promote safeguarding within the organisation and create a safe and inclusive environment for all. Report any safeguarding concerns as and when required.

• Engage in all Sports Science & Medicine CPD activities as well as any other mandatory training.

The Cragg lab alongside other groups within Oxford (Wade-Martins and Magill), London (Kittler) and Germany (Liss) are conducting a collaborative Wellcome funded research project to explore the physiological roles of Ca2+ in dopamine transmission to gain insights into the potentially toxic roles of Ca2+ in Parkinson’s disease.

This project will exploit state-of-the-art tools to understand the roles of Ca2+ influx, storage and signalling within dopamine axons in wild-type animal models of Parkinson’s. This project will compare the Ca2+ biology across striatal territories to improve our understanding of the role of Ca2+ in health and disease. Our recently published data suggests that the roles of voltage-gated Ca2+ channels are dynamically regulated across striatal territories in a manner that correlates with risk factors of Parkinson’s [REF].

In this project we will develop a better understanding of the downstream coupling of Ca2+ to mitochondrial function to better understand the selective vulnerability of a subset of DA neurons in Parkinson’s, and potentially identify druggable targets that could neuroprotective potential in the treatment of Parkinson’s. We are now seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Scientist with a strong interest in Ca2+ biology to join us as part of this exciting collaboration.

Duties include contributing to overseeing the management and genotyping of animal model colonies and parkinsonian models; adapting existing and developing new scientific techniques and experimental protocols; testing hypotheses and analysing scientific data from a variety of sources, reviewing and refining working hypotheses as appropriate; contributing ideas for new research projects and developing ideas for generating research income.

You will have a strong background in electrophysiological and/or electrochemical and/or photometry techniques, to investigate neural circuits or synapses of the central nervous system. Applicants must hold, or be close to completion of, a PhD/DPhil in a relevant area of neurobiological research.

This is an exciting research opportunity for developing and evaluating a new model of care for early psychosis in resource constrained setting. The research programme involves establishing services in number of sites, follow up of participants for one year and evaluating the service using both quantitative and qualitative methods. A nested cohort will be used for developing and validating a prediction model for early recognition of treatment resistant psychosis.

The successful candidate will lead the programme from conception to completion and will work directly under the supervision of Prof Saeed Farooq. You will be based at Keele University, School of Medicine, which incorporates research in mental and global health which is one of University's strategic research areas. You will work closely with early career researchers based at LMIC sites who will be implementing the early intervention in psychosis programme at sites in LMIC countries. You will have the opportunity to use your initiative and creativity to identify areas for research, develop research methods, and extend your research portfolio.

You will have a PhD with an in-depth knowledge and experience in early intervention in psychosis. The understanding of healthcare systems and developing services in LMIC is desirable. Candidates without a PhD will be considered if they have completed clinical training in psychiatry with relevant experience in early intervention in psychosis or related fields and have in-depth knowledge of research methods demonstrated by publications and other research outputs. Ideally you will also have project development and management experience.

The post will be based at Keele for research purposes and in Midlands Partnership University Foundation Trust for clinical work.
Our global health research programme started in January 2017 and current global health projects are funded by GCRF, AHRC, MRC and NIHR.
