Job Purpose:

• The team's role is to design the LV, HV and EHV networks in UK Power Networks regulated SPN area to ensure it is safe, highly performing, cost-efficient and enabling Net Zero.
• The successful candidate carries out planning activities associated with UK Power Networks electricity distribution network up to and including 132kV.

Principal Accountabilities:

• Perform Power System studies and design the electrical network and associated projects so as to comply with all relevant standards and improve synergies between the Distribution and Infrastructure networks. Drivers to be addressed include: load growth, generation capacity release, protection issues, condition of assets, supply quality issues, fault history, diversions, undergrounding in AONB areas…
• Carry out network assessments to determine the optimal point of connection and design associated reinforcement for new load, generation and energy storage enquiries.
• Perform Active Network Management (ANM) curtailment assessments for generation, load and battery storage connections, enabling earlier connections.
• Analyse network issues and propose technically sound and cost-effective solutions across voltage levels. This will involve system studies through network modelling, protection design, equipment specification, site visits…
• Produce concise business cases to achieve the Asset Portfolio Plan (APP), and approve capital projects up to £50k
• Produce Regional Development Plans (RDP) to inform partners and to support the justification of the ED2 plan.
• Determine Protection settings for the secondary network, and draw high-level protection diagram for the EHV network schemes.
• Work with Connections, Procurement, Delivery, Property & Consents and other company partners as relevant when developing schemes.
• The post holder also represents UK Power Networks in discussions with external bodies and negotiates with customers regarding non-rechargeable diversion schemes and to some extent on other schemes. External interfaces include other Distribution Network Operators, National Grid, Network Rail, Local Authorities, OFGEM, Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) and customers.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

• Experience with electricity distribution networks, at all voltages up to 132kV, but candidates with experience at fewer specific voltage levels will be considered and a development plan will be put in place.
• Qualified to a Degree or Master in Electrical Engineering or Power Systems Engineering. Candidates with an HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering with relevant experience will also be considered.
• Experience in electrical distribution network design and planning would be a major advantage.
• Experience of electricity network modelling would be a major advantage.
• Depth of understanding of power flows, fault levels and voltage profile management is required.
• Experience in LV, HV or EHV Operational role would be an advantage.

Job Purpose:

• The Network Planning SPN Team is part of the Asset Management Directorate. The team's role is to design and manage the LV, HV and EHV networks in UK Power Networks regulated SPN area up to and including 132kV to ensure the network complies with all relevant standards.
• The Post holder carries out planning activities associated with UK Power Networks electricity distribution network up to and including 33kV under the close supervision of a planning engineer.

Principal Accountabilities:

• Carry out Power System analysis and design the electrical network and associated projects so as to comply with all relevant standards and optimise synergies between the Distribution and Infrastructure network.
• Drivers to be addressed include: load growth, generation capacity release, protection issues, condition of assets, supply quality issues, fault history, diversions, undergrounding in AONB areas…
• Analyse network issues and propose technically sound and cost-effective solutions across voltage levels. This will involve system studies via network modelling, protection design, equipment specification, site visits…
• Determine Protection settings for the secondary network due to mal operations
• Work with Connections, Procurement, Project Managers, Property & Consents and other company partners as relevant when developing schemes.
• The post holder also represents UK Power Networks in discussions with external bodies and negotiates with customers regarding non-rechargeable diversion schemes and to some extent on other schemes. External interfaces include other Distribution Network Operators, National Grid, Network Rail, Local Authorities, OFGEM, BEIS and customers.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience:

• Experience with electricity distribution networks, ideally at all voltages up to 33kV, but candidates with experience at fewer specific voltage levels will be considered and a development plan will be put in place.
• Qualified to an HNC or HND in Electrical Engineering or Power System Engineering. There can be opportunity to progress towards HND while in the role for those starting with an HNC only.
• Experience in electrical distribution network design and planning would be a major advantage.
• Experience of electricity network modelling would be a major advantage.
• Depth of understanding of power flows, fault levels and voltage profile management is required.
• Experience in LV, HV or EHV Operational role will be an advantage.
• An understanding of the requirements of Engineering Recommendations, in particular P2, G98, G99, G74, G75, G77, G5, P28, P29, P27, would be an advantage.
• Awareness of the Distribution/Grid Code and National Grid Connection and Use of System Code (CUSC) would be an advantage.
• Excellent communication, report writing and presentation skills, are necessary.

Team

The Technical Sourcing & Standards team is an integral part of the Asset Management Directorate, reporting to the Director of Asset Management, and develops innovative plant, overhead line, underground cable, switchgear, transformer, protection and civil engineering standards and the technical sourcing strategies that provide the best asset solutions at the lowest life cycle cost. The team is a point of reference both within UK Power Networks and for external partners concerning all items of plant and equipment, that is intended to be connected to the electricity distribution network at all voltages from low voltage up to 132kV.

Nature and Scope

There is an opportunity for an experienced civil engineer to join the team and to become involved in the development of substation civil design standards and associated materials. The role typically includes the following:

Develop the civil design standards for internal and external use.

Specification, approval and management of the associated materials and equipment.

Visit manufacturers and suppliers to assess their ability to supply compliant equipment and materials.

Introduce new solutions to improve safety, efficiency and reduce cost.

Carry out site visits including entry to operational substations.

Build relationships with all partners.

Contribution to the team's knowledge of civil engineering.

Responsibilities

Develop civil design standards to ensure technical compliance with regulatory requirements and providing a harmonised UK Power Networks approach.

Produce high-quality technical documentation covering materials specification, design, installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance activities.

Take ownership of associated documentation and ensuring it is current and up-to-date.

Specification, technical sourcing and approval of substation materials and equipment.

Carrying out factory audits and factory acceptance testing.

Prepare training and communication material for introducing new materials and equipment.

Carry out failure and incident investigations to initiate corrective actions and identify continuous improvement opportunities.

Resolve technical queries associated with civil materials, equipment, standards, and processes.

Contribute to our technical forums and representing UK Power Networks on relevant industry working groups.

Support other members of the team, Asset Management, and other departments including collaboration with all partners to identify our needs and opportunities.

Apply an innovative approach to all aspects of the role and introducing new ways of working.

Comply with the requirements of the designer as determined by the CDM Regulations.

Essential Qualifications

A degree in civil engineering and working towards becoming a chartered engineer.

A civil engineering background in building works within the electricity distribution or other utility sector.

An understanding of industry, national and international standards relevant to substation civil design and material specification.

An understanding of health and safety including Construction Design and Management (CDM).

An understanding of UK regulatory requirements, asset lifecycle, asset management, procurement, and equipment sourcing.

A high standard of technical writing and the able to produce concise documents.

Proficient in the use of Microsoft desktop applications

Proficient in the use of AutoCAD and the ability to develop civil and electrical engineering drawings.

Identify, and implement solutions.

Team working skills and be competent in written and oral communications at all levels.

The ability to resolve different technical engineering issues and provide relevant technical advice.

Desirable Experience

Experience in roadworks, drainage, structural steel works, cable routes, cable trenches, installation of power cables, substation buildings, structures to support outdoor distribution equipment, fences and high security features, secondary oil containment, drainage systems.

Experience in M&E services, building services, ventilations systems, fire suppression systems.

Knowledge of the Planning Application system in England.

Knowledge of distribution equipment including switchgear, transformers, overhead lines, underground cables, protection and earthing, and a willingness to develop understanding in these areas.

Development experience using SharePoint, PowerBI, PowerApps.
