The post holder will have a key role in delivering the maternity strategy and quality agenda. Instrumental in monitoring and supporting performance and delivery of excellence in midwifery, championing choice for women and their families and providing strong leadership for the midwifery team.
To be highly visible and approachable to the maternity multi-disciplinary team, support women and their families using the service, and the public so that open and honest communication channels are created and effective assessments of care delivery can be undertaken.To provide guidance, support and professional leadership to all staff within the Directorate and across the CCG and GP’s as appropriate, demonstrating a responsible attitude in order to promote confidence in the service, promote choice and woman centred evidenced based care.
To promote the autonomous role of the midwife, empowering midwives to make decisions and ensure future developments reflect the needs of the local population.Ensure that staff are adequately trained in mandatory areas such as CTG, Shoulder Dystocia, Breech delivery, Cord prolapse, PPH management, neonatal and maternal resuscitation.
Identify problems relating to clinical practice and liaise with Professional Midwifery Advocate and Practice Development Team to establish a programme to develop professional awareness and skills.Ensure a seamless service across maternity services liaising closely with the Clinical Managers for the outpatient and the intrapartum maternity services maximising use of resources reducing unnecessary interventions, reducing length of stay and maintaining quality care incorporating Lean Thinking principles.
Provide cross managerial cover for other clinical managers within maternity as necessary.Ensure robust communication systems across maternity services and other departments including external agencies such as GP’s, the CCG, Croydon Council, Children’s’ centres and user groups as appropriate.
To provide appropriate and consistent professional advice to other multi-disciplinary teams within the Directorates, acting as a point of contact at times of difficulty and when support is required.To be responsible for the implementation of the quality agenda at ward and department level.To establish links with the FFT to facilitate early learning from reported comments and complaints.
To be contactable via bleep whilst on duty to provide advice and support, ensuring that when not on duty this bleep is held by a member of the senior midwifery team.To undertake extended hour roles, including on call from home, as appropriate to support the delivery of the quality agenda throughout the 24 hour care period, including child protection.
Working with Director of Midwifery, Midwifery Managers and Associate Director of Operations support on implementation of Baby Friendly Initiative across maternity services.Work in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s rules and standards for midwives and nurses. Ensure that other NMC documents/standards and Trust policies/guidelines are adhered to. Maintain and develop professional knowledge and competence in accordance with NMC recommendations.

1. To provide professional and managerial support to the Director of Midwifery/Divisional Manager in relation to maternity services.
2. The post holder will be expected to provide guidance, support and leadership to all midwifery, nursing and support staff within the maternity unit.
3. Jointly working with the Director of Midwifery, and Clinical Lead the post holder will set the strategic direction for the named area of responsibility.
4. The post holder will be required to explore current practice, identifying areas for development, and planning the appropriate change using research and experience to evaluate outcomes.
5. The post holder will deputise for the Directorate Management Team as required.
6. To lead on the implementation of the recommendations of national policy documents in relation to named area of responsibility.
7. To monitor the standards of cleanliness within your designated area, taking appropriate action to rectify deficiencies.
8. To act as a clinical role model promoting professional, competent standards, working closely with the multi-disciplinary team.
9. To ensure that high standards are maintained within the clinical areas. In line with the Care Quality Commission framework support safety initiatives in designated areas, ensure all care is effective, caring, responsive, and well led.
10. Work to ensure the Trust’s Risk Management Strategy, and the Maternity Services Clinical Risk Management Strategy, are supported and implemented appropriately within area of responsibility.
11. Provide support to the Named Midwife for Safeguarding working closely with the Child Protection team to ensure statutory requirements regarding child protection are met.

The post holder will have experience of line managing an experienced team, completing clinical rotas on time, responding to PALS & complaints, and undertaking manager-on-call responsibilities.
1. In conjunction with the ward managers, the post holder will co-ordinate the day-to-day midwifery and nursing activities and ensure that adequate staff skill mix to cover areas of responsibility within the given resources.
2. In collaboration with the Clinical Lead, Director of Midwifery, Clinical Business Unit Lead, Associate Director General Manager and clinical leads to the long-term strategies of the Directorate, including major operational changes, service reviews, and developments to ensure quality patient focused services.
3. To contribute to the workforce planning process for the given clinical area, ensuring an appropriate skill mix, safe staffing levels and staff development opportunities so that Band 7 midwives manage their teams or work area effectively and deputise for the Clinical Managers as required.
4. To build external links to ensure service user involvement with the development of the maternity unit including attendance at the Maternity Voice Partnership and links with the CCG focus user group and Croydon Council where appropriate. Health Innovation Network (HIN) South London neonatal network links and nationally where appropriate.
5. To effectively manage the area resources, both pay and non-pay, and ensure that actual or potential cost pressures are reported to the Director of Midwifery, Associate Director of Operations, General Manager and Directorate Accountant.
6. To monitor and report on nursing and midwifery, support staff manpower usage and sickness. To implement corrective procedures to ensure adherence to the budget.
7. To participate in management of non-clinical facilities and environmental services that impact on care, i.e. catering, portering, domestic services, in conjunction with ward managers.
8. To ensure that the cleanliness of the environment meets local and national standards.
9. To ensure the timely investigation of all incidents and clinical complaints, both informal and formal, within the clinical area, ensuring timely action plans are developed and implemented whilst supporting the midwifery and support staff to ensure that where possible complaints are resolved at an informal stage.
10. To actively participate in the recruitment and retention of midwives of staff within the Directorate, instigating specific initiatives to manage predicted peaks and troughs.
11. To establish appropriate supportive supervision for midwifery staff to ensure competency to practice.
12. To be responsible for developing and implementing the Trust Nursing and Midwifery Strategy within the clinical areas.
13. To promote effective team building across the multi-disciplinary members of the clinical and non-clinical team within all areas.
14. To support and take appropriate action on issues of staff discipline, grievance, poor performance and sickness in line with Trust policy.
15. To promote equality and fairness in all aspects of staff management, responding positively to the challenges and opportunities presented by a team of staff from mixed professional groups and diverse cultural backgrounds.
16. To play an active role within the Directorate’s management team, participating in the full range of the Directorate’s affairs.

Education and Training
1. To ensure that practice is evidence based and focused on women and their families, ensuring clinical guidelines are developed and implemented, taking into account the NMC Code, NMC Midwives Rules and Scope of Practice.
2. To contribute to the development of a quality learning environment for students and trained staff through the development of effective links with key Higher Education Institutes both within and outside the Trust.
3. To ensure that each clinical area meets the requirements for placements of pre- and post-registration students and contributes to the development of all other staff.
Research and Development
1. To take the lead for evidence-based health care, reflective practice and audit.
2. To contribute to the planning and implementation of quality initiatives, including audit, care pathways and ‘patient’ journeys within clinical area.
3. To facilitate midwifery, nursing and other staff to participate in relevant research projects and to implement research findings where appropriate.
Professional / Personal
1. To maintain own registration with the NMC and abide by the NMC Code and likewise, all midwifery and nursing staff within their clinical area.
2. To comply with all Trust policies, procedures and guidelines with regards to staff management issues.
3. To take personal responsibility for own professional and personal development, in line with the NMC, and participate in personal performance reviews ensuring annual PDR for all inpatient staff are completed.
