Job Description

The Teacher of Design and Technology is an exciting addition to the Gloucester academy team.

The Department:

Gloucester Academy has one experienced full time DT and Engineering teacher and one full time experienced Hospitality and Catering teacher both which are supported by their own technician. We are expanding the departments currently and have successfully hired an additional hospitality and catering teacher and are now looking for a DT/ engineering teacher to complete the team. All members of the team have experience of working in industry and have a focus of encouraging a real love of the subject with our students and the wider school. We build a culture of learning through theory, design and skills-based tasks to ensure well rounded students within the subject who can respond to an industry standard brief as well as prepare them to demonstrate everyday life skills.

The DT department is committed to ensuring that all students from KS3 and KS4 are exposed to a World Class Curriculum that offers them the opportunity of first class teaching and learning. A curriculum which offers full coverage of the vital key skills and knowledge needed in order to achieve high end outcomes at GCSE and to develop a love of the design that surrounds them. DT embodies some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality Design education should engage, inspire and challenge students, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works designs. As students’ progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of design. They should also know how design both reflects and shapes our history, and contributes to our culture.

Curriculum:

At Key stage 3 Students have 2 hours of DT and one hour of Food and Nutrition per fortnight. These lessons are taught to tutor groups and are not part of a carrousel but rather taught continuously throughout the year. At Key stage 4 we offer Engineering and Hospitality and Catering which are both incredibly popular which is why we are increasing the department.

All Year 11s attend a weekly period 6 after school, this time is used for exam practice and to support students with essential coursework. We are excited to broaden the number of subjects that we offer so are open to applicants with other areas of expertise across the design technology framework.

The duties and responsibilities in this job description are not restrictive and the post holder may be required to undertake any other duties that may be required from time to time. Any such duties should not however substantially change the general character of the post.

Resources:

In each classroom there is a visualiser which the team uses during every part of every lesson. Each student has their own mini whiteboard enabling teachers to assess their class with ease.

In the school we have a fully functioning DT lab with a brand-new laser cutter, 3-D printers and welding stations kitted out with new equipment. DT have their own computer suite that they use for DT and coursework write up. The kitchens are fully functioning and we have a dedicated hospitality and catering suite that is available to use if required.

Main Duties/Responsibilities:

• To work with the Headteacher and Senior Leadership Team to promote inclusion, and equality of opportunity for both students and staff.
• To share in the corporate responsibility for, and commitment to the safeguarding and promotion of the well-being and discipline of all students.
• To progress the education and welfare of designated groups of students in accordance with the prevailing School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document, having due regards to the requirements of the National Curriculum, the aims, objectives and schemes of work of the Academy/Learning Area, Year Cohort, and any policies of the Academy Trust.
• To impact on the educational progress beyond one’s own assigned students.
• To Lead, develop and enhance the teaching practice of others including participation in Performance Management/appraisal arrangements.
• To contribute to curriculum planning and delivery as applicable.
• To monitor teaching and learning as part of the Academy’s self-evaluation process (to include lesson observation).
• Making available full, up-to-date schemes of work, for the subject within the Learning Area, for use internally and externally as required.
• Advising on appropriate classroom management.
• Advising regarding allocation of students to teaching groups within the Learning Area/Year following appropriate consultations.
• Advising regarding allocation of staffing for timetabling purposes.
• Controlling expenditure allowances and fulfilling the Academy’s budgeting expectations.
• The usage, storage and security of all facilities and resources.
• Ensuring the maintenance of relevant inventories according to Academy policies.
