The Role and Department

The Department of Biosciences is composed of 62 academic staff and research fellows; around 50 research and technical support staff; over 90 Research Postgraduate students and over 500 Single Honours undergraduate students, and also teaches students from the Natural Sciences programme. The Department is committed to an ethos of research-led teaching at both BSc and MBiol levels, and was ranked 5th in the UK for Biological Sciences Departments in the Complete University Guide 2024.

Our basic science underpins applications across each-and-every sector of the bio-economy, including Biotechnology, Ecology and Agritechnology. Research programmes are grouped in the following areas: Molecular Plant Sciences; Biomolecular Interactions; Ecology, Evolution and Environment; and Animal Cells and Systems. These groups organise focused seminar series, Research Away Days, manage joint research facilities, oversee mentoring, internal peer review and serve to nucleate larger research projects. Along with our excellent research facilities such as bioimaging, proteomics, metabolomics and genomics we offer a high quality and supportive environment for our research staff.

The Registered Nurse IV Chief of Education functions as an administrator, educator, and consultant utilizing management theory in collaboration with Patient Care Service (PCS) and other facility services. Must establish and maintain effective relationships with all levels of medical center personnel and relate effectively with customers, families, and the community as well as program and service leaders at the local and Veteran Integrated Systems Network (VISN) levels. Functions or scope of assigned duties include but are not limited to:

The Chief of Education provides senior leadership and oversight for daily clinical and administrative operations within the Education Department as directed by the Associate Director for Patient Care Services (ADPCS). Provides direct supervision over the following areas to include, but not limited to Nursing Education, Diabetes Education Program, Competency Program, Coach Mentor program, and the Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) Program. Additionally, is responsible for New Employee Orientation, New Supervisor Training programs, and the facility LEAD program.

The Chief of Education demonstrates creative approaches in the provision of education and training for patients and staff within the main facility and Community Based Outreach Clinics (CBOCs). Responsible for generating and disseminating new knowledge relevant to clinical practice, nursing administration, and nursing education. The Chief of Education is directly responsible for education needs assessments; provision, design, and evaluation of staff and patient education activities; provision of Library Services by the Learning Resource Center (LRC); and acts as the education liaison to all medical center services and the VISN Education Council. The Chief of Education has fiscal oversight of education program funding, scholarship program management, and LRC budget. Responsible for budget planning, forecasting, management, coaching and supervision of nursing and administrative support staff, program development, performance improvement leadership, labor management activities and participation in the interdisciplinary team.

The Chief of Education may serve as the Designated Learning Officer (DLO) for the medical center. The DLO oversees, assesses, and strengthens Veterans Affairs (VA) training and education mission. The DLO ensures compliance with all federal, state, and VHA laws and regulations, and all accrediting body standards. They are also responsible for the Veterans Affairs Student Trainee Experience Program (VA STEP) and nursing trainees. They will consult with VHA's Employee Education System (EES) as needed to ensure compliance with staff education functions such as mandatory training, Talent Management System (TMS), availability of learning resources, and all Veteran Affairs Central Office (VACO) reporting related to nursing education. Provides administrative support for the VA National Nursing Education Initiative (NNEI) scholarship program.

The Role and the Department

The Faculty of Arts & Humanities is looking to recruit a Grade 4 Learning and Teaching Administrator to join the Learning and Teaching team in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. As well as having responsibility for the Faculty's well-established Liberal Arts programme, the team is also responsible for the delivery of a suite of interdisciplinary postgraduate programmes some of which are delivered remotely, that launched in October 2024. As well as having responsibility for the day-to-day delivery of student-facing processes administered by the Faculty Office, the role will therefore be able to contribute to the development of new processes underpinning the delivery of these new programmes. The postholder will also be expected to provide an excellent staff and student experience as the first point of contact for enquiries relating to the Faculty's programmes and processes. The role will involve:

* Supporting key education processes, liaising with other team members as well as professional services colleagues in colleges, departments and central services.

* Under the direction of the L&T Manager and working with other members of the Faculty Learning and Teaching team, take responsibility for day-to-day support for the Faculty's Liberal Arts and Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Taught programmes, acting as a key point of contact for enquiries relating to admissions, induction, registration, progression, module and programme changes. The role requires using initiative to solve problems through liaison with other departments and services and escalating issues to more experienced team members where appropriate.

* Under the direction of the L&T Manager, and in collaboration with other members of the Faculty's Learning and Teaching team, taking responsibility for the administration of key student-facing processes within and across the Faculty. This aspect of the role will require excellent attention to detail, and the ability to communicate information clearly and concisely.

* Co-ordinating student-facing events, activities and resources relating to the programmes, including induction events and open days.

* Providing administrative support for Faculty Examination Boards, including inputting and checking student marks, preparing agendas and other supporting documentation, and ensuring that actions are recorded and followed up.

The Faculty Learning and Teaching Administrator will possess excellent organisational and time management skills, display a high degree of initiative and flexibility, and demonstrate a commitment to customer service excellence and collaborative working. The Faculty Office places a strong emphasis on inclusivity and collegiality, as well as professional development, and team members are encouraged and supported to identify and take forward process improvements and other initiatives in order to develop the key skills and competencies required for progression to more senior roles. Major duties include but are not limited to the following:

• Responsible for working with the DVAHCS Education Department and OAA in establishing affiliations with university audiology and speech pathology clinics. This includes conferring with several university department chairpersons, faculty clinic program directors, and university legal counsel for agreement compliance.

• Coordinates and mentors students to complete hearing screening exams for Police, Boiler Plant and other employees as requested by Occupational Health Service.
• Requests input from all staff on student progress and signs off on all clinic contact hours for students per affiliation (written, electronic TYPON system, or other applications).
• Maintains contact with affiliate at least twice per semester (mid-term and final evaluations) and arranges for site visits from University affiliates as needed.
