The incumbent physician is expected to provide a full range of clinical services including assessment and using the most appropriate techniques in providing quality care in their specialty. Incumbent is assigned to the Kernersville Health Care Center (HCC) under the direction of Kernersville HCC Director and is responsible to the Primary Care Section Chief who makes assignments and performs review and appraisals. Incumbent provides a full range of therapeutic interventions to unit/programs in the Medical Center to which they are assigned and has clinical privileges to practice including diagnostic assessment, medication evaluation, and management. Participates effectively in team meetings and treatment planning conferences, and collaborates with multidisciplinary team members in a matter that enhances coordination of comprehensive patient care. Physician ensures that the practice of medicine is consistent with Joint Commission, VA policies and procedures, clinical practice guidelines, VISN standards, national statutes and regulations, medical record documentation, mandatory continuing education, and HIPPA policies


Administrative Duties:

• Obligations/Responsibilities: Attend staff meeting, communicate with PACT team staff and administrative personnel to help facilitate quality care and access to a panel of Veterans and to help in preparation of issue briefs related to adverse patient outcomes, congressional inquiries or any other non-judicial investigation/summary.
• Clinical Management including indirect patient care: Open encounter and open consult maintenance, CPRS documentation requirements, monitoring of clinic management. Maintains involvement in matters concerning clinic productivity, relevant performance, Quality and Patient Safety oversight, as well as process improvements (system redesigns)

• Patient Care: Provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the promotion of health, prevention of illness, treatment of disease, and care at the end of life.
• Medical/Clinical Knowledge: Demonstrate knowledge of established evolving biomedical, clinical and social sciences and the application of that knowledge to patient care and the education of others.

• Admit neonates to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit/Intermediate Care Unit.
• Perform advanced diagnostic and life-saving treatment procedures.
• Develop full treatment regimens requiring knowledge of new techniques, use of prolonged or complicated procedures, or advanced and delicate skills.
• Provide appropriate resuscitative measures in the delivery room (e.g., preterm infants, emergency C-sections, complicated deliveries, etc.).
• Oversee trainees and nurse practitioners to ensure quality, timely and appropriate medical care.
• Assist in the education, evaluation and mentorship of the aforementioned trainees.
• Conduct teaching conferences and lectures for nursing and medical staff on techniques and theory of well-child preventative pediatrics, neonatal, and perinatal issues.

The registered nurse (staff nurse) is directly responsible to the designated manager in the assigned critical care area; the registered nurse, provides an environment for the delivery of care to clinically complicated and severely ill patients with acute and potentially life threatening, general medical, surgical and disease carrying multi-system failure in the adult population. They are responsible for assuring continuity of care for Critical Care patients implementing applicable disease management protocols as appropriate.

The registered nurse possesses basic knowledge and skills to apply all aspects of the nursing process within a collaborative, interdisciplinary practice setting which will then enable effective implementation of health promotion and prevention practices, management of acute and chronic illnesses, and attainment of optimal levels of functioning and/or support of the dying patient and significant others. Interdisciplinary plans of care are developed, implemented, reviewed and revised as necessary. Nursing responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient nursing care.
• Initiate treatments, administer critical medications and monitors effects and patient progress.
• Assists the critical care physician with procedures.

• Provide highly specialized nursing care to patients, including critically ill patients.
• Assessing patient condition based upon observation, examination and/or interview, physician's diagnosis, laboratory findings, age-related issues, and other pertinent information.
• Identify, document, implement, and formulate complex plans to meet patient care needs and to continually revise goals and/or objectives, according to changes in patient status.
• Respond decisively to life-threatening changes in patient's condition.
• Administer a wide variety of rapid-acting, highly potent, and/or potentially lethal IV fluids and medications, calculating drug dosages and administering medications using age-appropriate guidelines.
• Assist with complex nursing and diagnostic procedures and/or be responsible for advanced cardiac life support efforts until a physician arrives.
• Operate and/or monitor the performance of sophisticated equipment, used in the care of critically ill patients.
• Communicate pertinent patient/family information to the health care team.
• Provide education and support to patients and their family members.
