Technical Support are responsible for providing Engineering support to the Infrastructure Compliance Engineering team to assist in delivering expertise in general plant, system, equipment reliability, configuration management or other specialised subject matter needed to satisfy the multi-faceted needs of the organisation.

Main Responsibilities

Main Responsibilities for Electrical Technical Support:

• Responsible for development of pragmatic fit-for-purpose engineering solutions that meet the objectives of the organisation in a cost-effective manner.
• Support maintenance activities by implementing and maintaining the technical basis of maintenance (TBoM) process, in addition they will assist with planning for complex maintenance activities based on insight and equipment experience.
• Accountable to the Maintenance Delivery Manager for ensuring all maintenance tasks are clearly briefed, understood and are performed safely and on schedule to ensure safe operation of the facility.
• Comply with legislative, regulatory and company procedures and standards e.g. safety, quality, risk, security appropriate to the role.
• Responsible for ensuring the delivery of work complies with all site requirements and plant and personnel are operating within the safety envelope.
• Responsible for assisting in the production of any PMP's required within Compliance Engineering, this will include presenting at committee.
• Supporting the E&I Team Leader in installation, modifications and commissioning of installed equipment, including identifying and assisting in delivery of plant and process improvements.
• Responsible for producing appropriate Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) for any maintenance or breakdown tasks identified by the Team Leader.
• Attend any forums as appropriate to keep abreast of best practice around other facilities, responsible for sharing and implementing any learning around their facility.

Ideal Candidate

Essential Criteria for Electrical Technical Support:

• Degree Qualified (Electrical) or HND in an equivalent discipline. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of stated qualification.
• Strong communications skills, ability to communicate key information with customers, suppliers and stakeholders.
• Ability to demonstrate conservative decision making, even in pressure situations.
• Demonstrable knowledge of operational & maintenance requirements.
• Evidence of self-motivation with demonstrable levels of drive, energy and resilience.
• Ability to interface on a technical level with Design and Capability teams.
• Requirement to become appointed as Safety Supervisor.
• Required to become PMP Manager.
• Requirement to become appointed as Sub Contractor Supervisor.
• Ability to obtain DV level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial, criminal record checks, interview plus 10 years of UK residency).

Desirable Criteria for Electrical Technical Support:

• Hold IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent as a minimum qualification.
• A thorough awareness of nuclear, conventional safety and security requirements applicable to their area of responsibility.
• Ability to demonstrate supervisory experience for operations undertaken within a nuclear plant.
• Good general safety case awareness with demonstrable knowledge of nuclear safety mechanisms (SM), safety related equipment (SRE) and Safety Features (SF).
• Ability to interface on a technical level with Design and Capability teams.

The Senior Technical Support Officer (Waste and Environment) is responsible for the management and operation of waste and environmental arrangements for NNL's Sellafield Operations (Windscale and Central Laboratory) to allow the smooth and continued operation of these facilities. They will be responsible for ensuring NNL's compliance with a number of requirements and regulations governing the nuclear industry and its relevant Site Licence Conditions, principally in relation to waste management (solid, aerial and liquid). They will act as the primary appointee for a number of major and minor key roles. Though based at the Central Laboratory they will be expected to manage operations at the Windscale Laboratory, as required.

Main Responsibilities for Senior Technical Support Officer (Waste and Environment):

• Responsible for the operations of the liquid effluent facilities at Central and Windscale Laboratory.
• Deputise for the Technical Support Manager (Waste & Environment).
• Management of solid waste consignments to Sellafield / NWS / Mitie.
• Management of Waste Liabilities costings of the laboratories.
• Appointed in compliance roles including, but not exclusively: Radiation Protection Supervisor (Sources), CoSHH Coordinator, Environmental Coordinator, ILW Coordinator, Plant Solid Waste Coordinator, PCM Coordinator, Liquid Effluent Coordinator.
• Ensure compliance of Safe Systems of Work procedures and report/initiate any necessary remedial action for their areas of responsibility.
• Provide advice and guidance on issues appropriate to operational documentation and associated Safe Systems of Work.
• Ensure resources and equipment are available to support waste operations.
• Appointed an Originator and Task supervision of waste operations, as required.
• Manage the laboratory's chemical and waste inventory, database and associated procedures.
• Carry out audits, observations and inspections to monitor and effect remedial action where necessary.
• Lead regulator interventions e.g. ONR, Environment Agency.

Essential Criteria for Senior Technical Support Officer (Waste and Environment):

• Experience of working in an industrial environment.
• Experience of safe systems of work and associated documentation.
• IOSH Working Safely or higher.
• Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Knowledge of the requirements for liquid effluent and waste management and disposal.
• Excellent organisational and coordination skills.
• GCSE's grade C or equivalent in Science, English and Maths (STEM) subject).

As a Maintenance Electrician at NNL you will be performing routine maintenance on a wide range of Electrical and Instrumentation plant systems. You will also carry out project work, breakdown repairs and safe isolations.

NNL is conducting a major programme of work for one of our customers in heavily shielded cells in the Active Handling Facility (AHF) on Sellafield site. The programme requires NNL to deploy a number of scientific techniques for Post Irradiation Examination (PIE) of nuclear fuel to assist in underpinning reactor safety cases. In order to meet demanding timelines for this data, NNL has implemented a shift rotation pattern.

The PIE (Post Irradiation Examination) Shift Team Leader (STL) will work with scientists and PIE technicians, based at Windscale Active Handling Facility (AHF), for customers such as Rolls-Royce and MoD. Working as part of 3 shift teams, each supervising and managing five PIE shift technicians, the post holder will attend work on a rotating double day shift pattern. The candidate will need to maximise the potential of the shift team, including development of people (behaviourally and technically), and equipment to meet customer and NNL ambitions. They will ensure a clear line of sight of all safety and security responsibilities and the availability of ready for service resource to support delivery. be a member of the AHF emergency response team.

In instances (e.g. planned plant outages) the post holders may be required to revert temporarily to a standard day working pattern, but will move back onto a shift pattern in accordance with the forward programme of work.

The position requires the maintenance of strong working relationships with the immediate team, project management and facility teams. The programme requires team members to work to very high quality standards and demonstrate an enabling, pro-active attitude to resolving issues. • Safety, Security and Quality: The STL is accountable for safety, security and quality performance within their individual shift team and must ensure that; staff have completed all mandatory training required, provision of resource to enable safety / security supervision and safe / secure operations, "Out of Norm" EHSS&Q events must be reported and reviewed on OSHENS within business timescales, staff are aware and adhere of security requirements and protocols.
• Safety & Security Leadership: The STL will be accountable for nuclear safety and security whilst on the shift working pattern within AHF in their role acting as Building Controller/Task Supervisor / First Aider as required.
• Team Performance: The STL will be accountable for team and individual performance, maintenance of technical skills within their shift team including ensuring performance of staff is managed and monitored via Performance and Development Review (PDR) process.

Main Responsibilities for Electrical and Instrumentation Craft (Shifts):

• Responsible for conducting corrective, preventative and scheduled maintenance activities on a range of plant equipment as directed by the Fix It Now Team Leader (FIN TL).
• Responsible for undertaking any electrical associated project work as demand necessitates.
• Responsible for carrying out fault diagnosis on electrical and instrumentation systems to aide efficient rectification of faults.
• Responsible for carrying out safe, effective and controlled isolations of Electrical Plant within their designated area. They shall be responsible for highlighting any issues immediately to the FIN TL.
• Responsible for completing MOVEX job cards in accordance with site standards to ensure that good quality maintenance history is recorded.
• Responsible for supporting the designated facility in the installation, modification and commissioning of rigs and installed equipment, including identifying and assisting in delivery of plant and process improvements.
• Responsible for ensuring that the maintenance/breakdown/project tasks they are involved in are always covered by an appropriate Safe System of Work (SSOW) and complied with.
• Responsible for checking and fully understanding the Electrical Instructions/Proof Tests that they are working to. If unsure at any point during delivery, they shall stop, make safe and highlight any issues to the FIN TL.
• Responsible for ensuring that appropriate workplace standards are always maintained, and the correct tools and equipment are selected for the task and used only as intended.
• Expected to actively participate in team briefs and 'Learning From Experience' (LFE) reviews, taking personal action to resolve any issues or shortfalls in their area. If further resolution is required, they must highlight this to the FIN TL.
• Always comply with company/site standards and expectations of behavior and performance. They must actively challenge others they see not doing so and encourage the behaviors expected.

NNL are looking for a trainee criticality specialist to support delivery of Criticality Safety Assessments within NNL, our own facilities, our Focus Areas and current and future customers. You will develop technical skills within the Criticality area under the direction and mentorship of senior colleagues.

We are looking for a driven individual to develop the skills to support NNL and its customers. The role will involve:

• working with a wide range of teams from safety, technical and delivery within NNL.


• supporting the technical delivery of projects under the direction of the Criticality Technical Lead.


• developing the technical capability and skills for criticality safety assessment.

You will have relevant experience criticality safety, safety cases or related technical disciplines, alongside experience delivering to the required time, cost, and quality meeting the customer expectations.

At NNL we support working flexibly, can accommodate homeworking, and can be flexible about location, although some travel will be necessary, to support business needs.

The location of this role is flexible and can be based at Sellafield, Workington or Preston.

Main Responsibilities for Criticality Consultant:

• Technical delivery of projects in the criticality area to time, cost, quality, value and service requirements (working under direct supervision). Customers may include any UK civil or defence nuclear facility or operator (including NNL laboratories).


• Develop customer and stakeholder network within own project areas.


• Contribute to IR&D projects.


• Develop technical awareness of NNL capabilities within the criticality safety area.


• Developing individual SQEP skills for Criticality under the guidance of a mentor.


• Attendance at of relevant national industry groups.

Essential Criteria for Criticality Consultant:

• Degree qualified or equivalent level of demonstrable technical capability.


• SQEP 1-2 with some experience in criticality safety.


• Basic level of knowledge in the specialised field of criticality safety assessment.


• Ability to both act independently, under guidance, and to work in a team.


• Good communication skills.


• Ability to obtain SC level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial and criminal record checks plus 5 years' worth of UK residency).

Desirable Criteria for Criticality Consultant:

• Membership of a professional institution.


• Ability to develop good networking skills.

• Lead on the technical delivery of projects in the criticality area to time, cost, quality, value and service requirements (working independently). Customers may include any UK civil or defence nuclear facility or operator (including NNL laboratories).
• Technical lead on small projects, e.g., up to £50k.
• Supporting long-term projects with a duration from 3 months up to typically 1-2 years.
• Clearly define project/bid deliverables and determine the scope of what milestones need to be completed to achieve the overall objectives.
• Working as part of multi-disciplinary teams addressing safety challenges.
• Interfacing with internal and external stakeholders to effect successful delivery of projects and identify new opportunities for the team.
• Contributing to the development of new capabilities through innovative approaches and providing insight. Work independently on own IR&D project and submit own IR&D proposal.
• Maintaining technical awareness of NNL capabilities within the criticality safety area.
• Developing and maintaining SQEP skills for Criticality and continuing professional development
• Design and deliver criticality awareness training.
• Active involvement in relevant national industry groups.

Essential Criteria for Criticality Consultant:

• Degree qualified or equivalent level of demonstrable technical capability.
• SQEP 3, experienced in criticality safety.
• Strong level of knowledge and experience with proven track record in technical delivery in the specialised field of criticality safety.
• Proven ability to both act independently under own initiative and to work in a team.
• Strong communication skills, including multi-site working.
• Mentoring skills to mentor and develop junior staff.
• Good networking skills.
• Ability to obtain SC level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial and criminal record checks plus 5 years' worth of UK residency).

Desriable Criteria for Criticality Consultant:

• Preferably Chartered Membership of a professional institution, or working towards this qualification.
