The Service Manager for the Children's Services Clinical Service line has responsibility for managing all aspects of operational delivery within the clinical specialty to the agreed quality standards and within the resource and income base available in a large Clinical Specialty

Service Delivery and Improvement

Ensure the efficient organisation of clinical and non-clinical services within Children's Services, making best use of capacity to deliver activity within the terms of the Trust Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and with cost effective utilisation of staff and non-pay resources (National Service Frameworks, NICE guidance, Improving Outcomes Guidance etc).

Communicate information in relation to service delivery to a range of people at all levels within and external to the Trust; providing explanation as appropriate for any breakdown in service delivery.

Continually analyse service performance data against regional and national data, taking into account potentially conflicting information and develop service improvement plans.

Implement patient pathways with clinical staff and colleagues, which deliver best practice and make progress towards achievement of wait time standards and milestones required.

Leading the delivery of complex and sometimes competing demand and capacity targets for the Clinical Specialty.

To undertake annual business planning and develop plans for the Clinical Specialty.

Operate as the champion for service modernisation and change sharing best practice, successes and learning across the Group.

Financial and Performance Management

Operate as accountable budget holder for the relevant clinical specialty budget within a large clinical service and be accountable for all pay and non-pay expenditure.

Ensure that budgets are managed in accordance with the Trust’s Standing Financial Instructions, working collaboratively with the Finance lead, taking action where necessary to prevent or address variance in performance, and to incorporate recommendations of internal and external audit.

Ensure the clinical specialty meets the required performance standards.

Share and communicate performance indicators and level of performance throughout the relevant clinical specialties, taking action where required to address variance form the standard/milestone.

Ensure that unplanned variation in service delivery (activity, income, expenditure, capacity, performance) is identified and appropriate, timely action taken

Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to recruit Senior experienced/qualified Coders to join our Clinical Coding Team (Bedford site). To meet requirements of a Band 6 you will need to be flexible in your approach, a good communicator, able to work as part of a team to tight deadlines and you will hold the nationally recognised ACC (Accreditation of Clinical Coders) qualification in clinical coding.

Candidates who currently do not meet the requirements of a band 6 may be considered for a developmental role at band 5 however you must have a track record of high quality coding, you will have a good knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology.

Able to demonstrate competence in the use of ICD10 and OPCS 4.9 classifications, complete coding rules and application of National Clinical Coding Standards across acute specialities is a prerequisite, excellent communication skills and progressing to a band 6 once ACC have been acquired.

The Clinical Coding Department is a pivotal Service within the Trust’s IM&T Division. These are corporate functions responsible for all Trust management information, reporting both externally and internally, providing vital management information to clinicians and managers which inform and determine the basis for decision-making across the Trust.

The Trust uses ‘Electronic Documentation Record Management service’ (E.D.R.M.S), Medicode360, this enables remote working.

Lead Clinical Coders are required to create and maintain good communication links with Consultants and their clinical teams to ensure quality and depth of clinical coding is achieved. Reginald Hart Ward has 31 beds and is an acute trauma and orthopaedic ward in a hospital setting with a main focus on admissions for patients with fractured neck of femurs.



The post holder, in the absence of the Ward Manager, has continuing responsibility for the management of the ward, including the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care to a high standard.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to lead, develop and provide the day to day service of the established Pre-Operative Assessment clinic on the Bedford site. We are seeking a Band 6 Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join the Microbiology department at Bedford Hospital. The laboratory is equipped with a variety of equipment including the BioMerieux BacT/Alert Virtuo, BD MGIT, DS2, the BioMerieux Vidas, Biofire Torch and Film Array, Roche Cobas 6800, BD Max, Cepheid Gene Xpert, Beckman Coulter Microscan, Stratec Gemini and Bruker Maldi-TOF.

To meet requirements of a Band 6 you will need to be flexible in your approach, a good communicator, able to work as part of a team to tight deadlines and you will hold the nationally recognised ACC (Accreditation of Clinical Coders) qualification in clinical coding.

The Department provides a wide range of services including Pulmonary Physiology, bronchoscopy and EBUS, Tuberculosis, Lung Cancer,Interstitial Lung Disease, Severe Asthma,Pulmonary Rehabilitation, Pleural, Full Sleep Medicine and Non-invasive ventilation. The appointee will join the existing consultants in providing a comprehensive respiratory medicine service and participate in an on-call rota for Respiratory Medicine non-invasive ventilation cover.

Key tasks;

· Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of all patients presenting to the Hospital. This includes optimising safe and timely discharge of patients and supporting patient flow.

The appointee will join the well-established Respiratory Department. The successful candidates will complement the consultant capacity to enable an effective and seamless respiratory service, in both in-patient and outpatient settings.

There may also be opportunities for the successful candidate to take part in activities at the Trust’s Bedford Hospital site, depending upon their clinical interests.

A sub-speciality interest of relevance to a Respiratory Department will be considered, as is an enthusiasm for teaching, audit and research. The precise sub-specialty responsibilities for this post will be open to negotiation among the consultant team following the appointments. Applicants will have the opportunity to discuss during the interview if they want to contribute to the general medical rotas or to do pure respiratory medicine. The Applicant will participate in the seven day service rota and respiratory on call/respiratory HDU rota.

Consultants joining the organisation are given dedicated time in their job plans for new service development and to pursue their sub specialty interest. The post-holder and other consultant colleagues will be expected to cover each other’s absences on annual or study leave.

Weekly work commitments will be within the European directives on working hours and will also be influenced by the Royal College of Physicians recommendations, the new consultant contract and specified in the Job Plan. The seniorRespiratory Consultantsin the department will act as mentors for new consultants, along with the other consultants in their absence. All clinical issues are openly discussed at formal and informal meetings.

The allocation of programmed activities will be based on 8.5 for direct clinical care and 1.5 for supporting professional activities. The detailed job plans will be agreed in consultation with the Clinical Director and the Consultants in the Department, with the approval of the Medical Director and Chief Executive or his/ her representative.

The job plans will be a prospective agreement that sets out a consultant’s duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year. It will cover all aspects of a consultant’s professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. It will provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external. In addition, it will provide personal objectives, including details of links to wider service objectives, and details of the support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives.

The pattern of work may change in the future to meet local changing needs and annual review meetings will take place in line with the new Consultant Contract, job planning and appraisal arrangements.

• To assist in the delivery of the safe, effective and efficient supply of aseptically prepared chemotherapy and other medicinal products in accordance with work instructions.
• To prepare documentation and labels for supply of ready-made aseptically prepared products.
• To accurately dispense outsourced parenteral chemotherapy treatment, ensuring product is fit for purpose and the batch number and expiry dates are recorded accurately.

• To undertake continued professional development and training as necessary to ensure a high level of competency in carrying out the tasks required and to enable further appropriate development.
• To participate in the Final Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) Scheme. To be an ACPT and complete final accuracy checks on Chemotherapy and supportive medicines, against clinically screened prescriptions.
• To regularly attend and actively participate in discussions at Aseptic Services staff meetings.
• To obtain GCP qualification and maintain Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and annual updates regarding Clinical Trials.
• To accurately dispense clinical trial prescriptions to Pharmacy Aseptics standards after completing documented trial specific training for each trial after appropriate training and competency assessment/achievement of Pharmacy Aseptics dispensing standards.
• To train and participate in statutory temperature monitoring of clinical trial drugs and all other drugs held for chemotherapy and haematology use.
• To ensure the disposal and recycling of chemotherapy and other medicinal products is carried out in a safe and efficient manner within the Aseptics Unit in accordance with Health & Safety (H & S), COSHH regulations and departmental work instructions.
• If requested, to be part of the Health & Safety Team for Pharmacy and take part in Health & Safety assessments to ensure a safe environment for working.

In addition to the above duties, the post holder will be expected to:


• Participate in the day to day operation and supervision in pharmacy Aseptics including updating the daily list of chemotherapy patients to reflect pending status and the ordering, cancellation and receipt of ready-made cytotoxic doses for individual patients.
• Communicate and liaise with Oncology and Haematology staff on a day to day basis with regard to patient treatment. Responding to queries in an efficient manner, referring to a Pharmacist, Senior/Lead Pharmacy Technician or relevant healthcare professional when necessary.
• To co-ordinate and monitor the handling, storage, dispensing of outsourced aseptically prepared products to ensure this is done in a safe, efficient and cost effective manner, recognising the high cost of many of these products. Ensure availability of stock whilst minimising waste e.g through effective use of databases & stock rotation. This includes organising safe destruction of drug waste and investigating stock levels and problem solving.
• Assist in the development and review of Standard Operating Procedures (‘’Aseptic Work Instructions’’) within Pharmacy Aseptics to ensure that agreed standards are met and provide a safe, high quality, effective service.
• Participate in the training of Technicians & Assistants under the supervision and guidance of the Pharmacy Aseptics co-ordinator. Act as a professional role model and mentor for all technicians, assistants and trainee staff working in Pharmacy Aseptics, actively demonstrating integrity, ownership and leadership in all aspects of the role.
• Assist in the development of systems and service to enhance the efficiency within pharmacy Aseptics
• Undertake line management responsibilities to review staff performance on regular basis and provide appropriate feedback. To manage a specific member of the aseptic team and complete yearly appraisals.
• Assist the Aseptics management in collating information and investigating Aseptics related incident reports (near-miss and trust wide)
• To co-ordinate the in-house pre-packing and emergency box packing procedures alongside other Senior Aseptics technical staff.
• To organise the packing and checking of emergency boxes for the Trust ensuring continuity of supply.
• To work with other senior pharmacy technicians to determine and forward plan requirements for medicine pre-packs for wards and departments which need to be completed in-house.
• Deputise for the Pharmacy Aseptics co-ordinator as and when required.
